"Cutting and transfer mechanism.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements to cutting and transfer mechanisms and more particularly to mechanisms of this kind applied to a press for riveting or forming heads on rods, etc., or to a machine. analog machine,
One of the main objects of this invention is to establish such mechanisms which are constructed and operate in such a way as to enable the speed and output of the machine with which they are associated to be increased. Other objects are to provide holding and cutting devices which rigidly clamp and hold. firmly, while cutting, the portion of a wire:
metal, bar or the like which has to be cut, these devices being composed of several parts which open slightly
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and allow the wire to pass between them, which then close again and firmly clamp the wire which, moving as a block back across the face of the cutting tool, sever the serving portion of the wire with an absolutely clean cut and at right angles, then transport the cut portion, which is now a blank, to an ejecting station; and to arrange this cutting mechanism relative to the other parts, in such a way that it performs a return stroke for the purpose of 'a subsequent cutting operation during the transfer of the workpiece to the manufacturing tools.
The invention also mainly relates to a transfer mechanism, independent of the cutting mechanism, which receives the part, grasps it and holds it rigidly so that it cannot perform any relative movement, which presents it to the alignment of the parts. manufacturing tools, which ceases to clamp or hold said part or blank when it has been partially introduced into the die by a sufficient distance for it to be supported and which then makes a return stroke to receive another part.
Another object of the invention is to establish a transfer mechanism which is as light as the forces exerted on it allow, in order to facilitate its rapid movement such that the speed and the output of the machine at which it is is associated can be increased.
Another object of the invention is to effect the positioning of the mechanism relative to other parts so that it can easily be assembled with the latter and adjusted with the minimum of manpower and difficulty.
Other objects of the invention will become evident in the course of the description given below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, that: which represent a preferred embodiment thereof and on the /

When it is proposed to remove the tool block 11 from the machine, the nut 20 is tightened on the bar 19. This compresses a spring 23 and relative to the tension against the ears 17 and 18, so that the sliders 13 'and 14 later move to be brought closer to one another, then ceasing to be in contact with the roller 59 and the adjusting screw 52. of metal wire passing through the cutting die 56. When the roller 46 is located on the upper part of the cam 44, the grooves 13 and 14 and the knives 16 carried by these slides occupy their right-hand position (figure). 57 co- Incident then with the ejection line 58. At this station, an ejector pin 54 works in a well-known manner. The adjustment in time provided by the cam is such that when the pusher 50 moves the slides and the knives from the wire drive line to the election line, the roller 59 remains in contact with the lug 17. When the knives move in the opposite direction,
the energy source is applied to said knives through the oscillating arm 25, and the cutting pusher 50 moves backwards without ceasing to remain in contact with the lug 18.
When the sliders occupy the position in which the opening 57 coincides with the wire drive line, as well as in the position of coincidence with the ejection line. the knives 16 are moved and kept separate from one another by a distance limited by the spring 26, which allows the free passage of the metal wire and of the blank between them.
The screw 52 of the pusher 50 is adjusted so that the knife 16 carried by the slider 14 terminates just below the ejection line. During this action the swing arm 85 continues its movement a small additional distance until that the lug 17 of the slide 13 comes into contact with the stop screw 24, and the knife 16 carried by this slide stops just beyond the ejection line. The spring 23 holds these knives slightly separated, by pushing the slider 13 away from the slider 14, by a distance determined by the stop pin '-14.which eliminates the clamping of the knives on the blank held between them.
The ejector pin 54, working in a well-known manner, pushes the workpiece away from the position it occupied between the knives and introduces it into the fingers of the transfer mechanism. The sliders 13 and 14 perform a stroke of return so that the opening 57 again coincides with the wire drive line, this movement resulting from the action of the

This is because the swing arm 25 ceases to exert its thrust on the slider 13, but the cutting pusher 50 continues to move a small additional distance. A portion of a drive stopper shape 55 is visible in Figure 6, but any other preferred shape can be used without coming out of the framework of the invention. As soon as the end portion of the wire is between the ooutea, ux, the pusher 50 advances the oonlisseauj 14 and the knife carried by this slider until and in contact with the protruding portion of the wire
EMI7.4
At the same time, the cam 34 oscillates the arm 25, which advances the slide 13 and its knife until the latter has come into contact with the protruding portion of the metal wire.
'In this position the two knives firmly and rigidly grip that of the portions of the wire which protrudes beyond the face of the cutting die 56. The slides now move the knives and the blank held firmly between them from the wire drive line to the ejection line and, during this movement, the knives cut it. protruding portion of the wire and detaching it from the main length. The spring 39 compensates for any adjustment inaccuracy that may exist between the two cams 34 and 44.
Two shapes of knives have been shown in Figures 7, 4, 8 and 3, the shape 8 and 3 being intended to be used for the manufacture of so-called "long" blanks and that of Figures 7 and 4 being intended to be used. used for making debauchery called

feel a body pierced with openings intended to receive the fixing screws, and a head portion 60, thicker than the body, on the end face of which is the cavity 61 intended to receive the metal wire, to retain it and to transport it from one station to another. In the case of a blank longer than the thickness of the head portion 60, the drive stop 35 is located outside the knife,
as shown in Fig. 6. In the case of a blank shorter than the thickness of the head portion 60, a drive stop 62 having a relatively narrow end 64 is used. , yours of this kind, each of the knives 16 has a slot 63 of the desired depth in which protrudes the tip 64 of the drive stopper, which is located in the path of the wire at the time when the latter is driven at it. 'inside the cutting die 56 and enters the opening 57 between the knives,
when this opening coincides with the drive line The thickness of the head portion 60 of the knives is such that the latter confer great stability on the protruding portion of the wire which is between at the moment when this portion is detached. This is a favorable factor to ensure a rigid hold of the wire during the cutting operation, which is essential for obtaining a clean cut at right angles to the end of the blank. relative head of the knife is possible, in the present meoanism, because the blank is not presented to the manufacturing die by the knives, retorted to this day. In practice, it has been found that, until 'nowadays,
it is necessary for the thickness of these knives to be considerably reduced in order to prevent any collision with the punch which advances and cooperates with the production die. In the present mechanism, the heads 60 of the knives are relatively thick, regardless of the length of the workpiece, and they rigidly support the latter and protect it against any deformation during the cutting operation.
On the oscillating shaft 26 is mounted an oscillating arm 65 to which is fixed a block 66 carrying an arm or finger 67. The arm 67 carries, 1 a latches held by a bolt 69 under the tension of a res-

out 70.The end of the arm 67 has a notch 71 which is open on one side and above which protrudes one of the ends of the latch 68, the notch 71 being intended to receive a blank. The block 66 is adjustable in opposition on the arm 65, just as the arm or finger 67 is adjustable on the block 66,
which makes it possible to bring the notch 71 to. aligning the center of the manufacturing die 12 and thereby bringing the blank to a posi-die. tion in which its axis coincides with the opening of said /
To the frame 10 is fixed a support 72 provided with a cap 73 and in which a swinging shaft 74 is journaled, one of the ends of which carries an arm 75 which is connected to the swinging arm 65 by a connecting rod 76. and 78 screwed in one piece are fixed / provided on the path of the oscillating arm 65 and cooperate with a tab 79 of this arm to limit the amplitude of the movement of said arm.
On the side shaft 35 is mounted a cam hub 80 to which is fixed by means of screws 82, a cam 81; and a cam segment 83 is fixed in an adjustable manner to said cam by the same screws 82,
On a pin 84 fixed in the frame 10 or in another rigid part is rotatably supported an oscillating arm 88 carrying a cam follower 85 which slides on the face of the cam 81 and of the cam segment 83 and which is held in place. contact with these members by a rod 89 connected by a pin 90 to the oscillating arm 88 and sliding in a 'nut' 86 of a bracket 87 fixed to a fixed part, the rod 89 being surrounded by a spring.
Between the oscillating arms 88 and 91 of the shaft 74 is interposed an adjustable link comprising a connecting rod 92 fixed by a yoke 97 pivotally connected to the oscillating arm 91 and, by a chap 93, to the oscillating arm 88. the yoke 93 and a collar 94 of the connecting rod 92 is interposed a spring 95 which flexes when the tab 79 is in contact with the stop screw 78, when the apparatus has been adjusted for short blanks. the transfer operation is such that the arm 67 is quickly moved away from the position it occupied in front of the manufacturing die 12 / at the desired time to avoid contact with said arm

short lengths can be machined. When it comes to cutting blanks which are longer than the thickness of the knives, the notch 71 is brought above the ejection station. it occupies such a position, it remains stationary while the blank interposed between the knives is transferred from the cutting station to the front of the ejecting pin 54. The arm 67 then moves downwards and comes on. apply pressure on the blank resting in the notch 71 under the slight pressure exerted by the latch 68. When the blank has been pushed entirely out of the knives and introduced into the notch 71,
the ejector pin 54 rapidly retreats and the arm 65 pivots to the left (looking at Figure 11). which allows the arm 67 to pivot downwards and to transfer the blank engaged in the notch 71, to a position located opposite the manufacturing die 12. At this moment, the tab 79 comes into contact with the stop screw 77 and is adjustable in position, since the spring 98 which surrounds the rod 89 flexes elastically to allow such adjustment.
Cam 81 and cam segment 83 are used to transfer both short workpieces and long workpieces. If it is a matter of transferring a workpiece which is shorter than the thickness of the knives, the arm 67, having the notch at its outer end, stops at the ejection station and, at this time, the spring 95 is compressed to allow the cam 81 and the cam segment 83 to perform their entire stroke,

not used and the entire racea of the cam 81 and of the cam segment 83 is used as previously described. The cam oath 83 is adjustable in position on the cam 81, by means of the screws 82 and the groove 96, which makes it possible to adjust the movement of the oscillating arm 65 in time and allows - as a result of communicating to the arm 67 its return stroke at times firing from the production die 12 at an advanced or delayed memens following 'that it may be necessary.
In Figure 4, the drive stop 62 is placed closer to the tool block than the stop shown in Figure 2.

With the mechanism described a blank is detached from a length of wire by a clean cut which is such that the severed face is perpendicular to the length of the wire. This face at right angles is advantageous in future operations to be performed on the wire. The end of the wire which is in the cutting die also has a perfectly corrugated face and becomes one of the ends of the next blank which will be cut in this length so that both ends of the blank are
perpendicular to the length of this part and parallel to each other. To withstand the forces of the cut, the parts which must withstand these efforts must be relatively heavy and robust. However. the blank, when sectioned, is relatively light. Therefore, the mechanism which transfers this blank from the cutting mechanism to the manufacturing dies is also relatively light. this difference in volume in mechanical strength, etc.
In favor of the transfer mechanism is evidenced in this invention. The knives, pusher and associated parts are relatively heavy and sturdy, compared to arm or finger 67, block 66 and swing arm 65 which are part of the transfer mechanism. In machines of this general type, as they have been manufactured to date, the cutting mechanism and the transfer mechanism constitute one and the same mechanism and, therefore, do not present no difference in weight, mechanical strength, etc.
Likewise, in machines of this type, the cutting and transfer mechanism is immobilized opposite the manufacturing dies for a time long enough to allow the blank to be removed from said mechanism and presented to the dies. before the wire following drive stroke can take place in the described construction, however.
As soon as the transfer mechanism has received the blank, the cutting mechanism is drawn back to the wire drive line for a new wire feed-in motion while the transfer mechanism feeds the blank to the wire drive line. Malignment of the production dies, the adjustment over time is thus easier to achieve, and an increase in working speed and production is ensured. In this mechanism the arm not
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
transfer is positively actuated by means of a connecting rod connected to the oscillating arm at a point remote from the axis of rotation of said oscillating arm. which contributes to making the action factile and simple,
as opposed to the usual type of transfer mechanism in which the swing arm is attached to a swing shaft and actuated by this shaft,
By virtue of the present improved mechanism, the head-forming machine, etc., is operated at an increased speed, which assures an increase in production. If this increased speed is due to, it happened by chance that A blank ejected by the work dies does not fall quickly enough to come out of the way of another punch. the transfer mechanism.
carrying the new blank, would engage with it and help push it down. When the punches are moved horizontally between. the second punch placed laterally to the first is located in a horizontal line. and the blank does not emerges with only one punch when dropped or pushed down by the transfer mechanism. This differs from the operation of the usual type of riveting machine.
etc., in which the two punches are arranged in a vertical line and the blank ejected by the production die must, during its movement towards the bottom, punch away from the second punch located below. , as far as the clearance of the workpiece is concerned, the machine, due to this improved mechanism, is virtually a single stroke machine, which results from the fact that the second punch is placed laterally to the first and substantially in the same plane horizontal.
