EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Pour mieux faire comprendre l'invention et montrer comment on peut la mettre en pratique, on la décrira ci-après, à titre d'exemple, en se référant aux dessins annexés dans lesquels : la figure 1 est une vue partielle de face d'une machine à brocher actionnée au pied suivant l'invention; la figure 2 est une élévation de côté conforme à la figure 1, la figure 3 est une vue en détail (dessinée à une échelle plus grande que celle des figures¯1 et 2) montrant une élévation de face de la tête brocheuse ; la figure 4 est une élévation de côté, partiellement en coupe suivant la ligne IV-IV de la figure 3;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

EMI1.1
IMPROVEMENTS IN MACHINES'A-BROCHER? 'AOTI (1) NNEES' A 'LA'MUN' OR AU'PIED.
This invention relates to broaching machines operated by hand or by foot.
In broaching machines of this type it is not possible to use a control which performs a full rotation in each broaching cycle as in motor broaching machines., The control adopted for machines operated by the broaching machine. 'operator therefore comprises a cam which receives an oscillating movement in order to drive the various elements
EMI1.2
comprising the mechanism for driving the thread and forming the stitch
In current practice, this oscillating cam is mounted on the side of the machine and its movement takes place in a substantially normal plane., Or alternatively ,,, parallel to the plane in which the clips are formed and driven into the plane. 'work and the cam pivots in the stitching head and is arranged to directly drive the various' elements forming the staples and pushing them in or,
, alternatively, the cam pivots at or near the rear of the machine and is connected to the clip-forming members and depressing it by levers articulated on an arm of the machine frame. This latter arrangement is intended to avoid the drawback of a massive and rapidly moving cam placed near the place where the clip is formed and inserted.
Each of the known constructions offers disadvantages, among which we can cite 1) the control cam is massive and unbalanced, 2) the connections between the cam and the stitching elements are either very indirect or strongly offset with respect to the line. displacement of said elements, thereby introducing undesirable torsional forces. 3) the connection between the mechanism in the head of the machine and the pedal or the hand-operated lever is very indirect 4) the control cam must have a large curved profile to provide the necessary driving force and avoid the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fatigue and 5) the wire feed system in the stitching head is very indirect and unsatisfactory from a mechanical point of view.
The main object of the present invention is to provide hand- or foot-operated broaching machines of an improved construction as a whole which makes it possible to avoid or reduce the defects of the known arrangements. The invention generally consists of a broaching machine operated by hand or by foot, characterized by a cam, a profile of which is provided to actuate a mechanism preparing the staple and intended to feed the thread and cutting it to produce a staple blank, said cam also having a profile to control a shaping and driving mechanism for transforming a blank into a staple and driving it into the workpiece, and further characterized by a lever intended to be tilted by foot or by hand,
this rocking movement of said lever being communicated to the cam in order to produce the angular oscillation of the latter, a single complete oscillation of the cam simultaneously controlling the two mechanisms for preparing the blank and for shaping and driving in .. a staple being thus shaped and driven into the work as a new blank is prepared for shaping and driven during the next full oscillation of the cam.
In order to better understand the invention and to show how it can be put into practice, it will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a partial front view of a foot-operated broaching machine according to the invention; Figure 2 is a side elevation according to Figure 1, Figure 3 is a detail view (drawn on a larger scale than that of Figures 1 and 2) showing a front elevation of the stitching head; Figure 4 is a side elevation, partially in section taken along line IV-IV of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a view similar to that of Figure 3, but with the various parts shown in their position at a different stage of the broaching cycle. Figure 6 is a side elevation, partially in section taken on line VI-VI of Figure 5; Figure 7 is a plan view of the stitching head; Figure 8 is a partial horizontal section taken along line VIII-VIII of Figure 3; FIG. 9 is a partial front elevational view of the stitching head without the front cover and certain parts of the mechanism; Figure 10 is a section taken on line X-X of Figure 9 but with the cover in place and Figure 11 is a partial horizontal section taken on line XI-XI of Figure 9 with the cover in place.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, it can be seen that the machine comprises a frame 1 having at its upper part an arm 2 provided with housings 3 and 4 for the front and rear bearings of a control shaft 5. The housing - ment 3 carries a short-plate 6 of a stitching head to which is fixed a plate forming a case 6a in which an element 7 shaping the staple and an element 8 driving the staple are driven in a reciprocating movement along a common vertical axis AA (Figure 1). In the example given the control shaft 5 extends from the stitching head to the rear of the machine and the axis of the shaft is practically normal to the housing in which the staples are formed. and stuck in the room.
As shown in figure 1, the axis of the drive shaft 5 is also placed above and offset
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
laterally with respect to the path traveled by the elements shaping and driving the clip.
At the lower part of the frame 1 is the pivot-mounted control mechanism which, in the present embodiments, comprises a lever in the form of a pedal 9 which rocks about an axis 10 passing through the frame of the machine. . At the rear of the machine is a practically vertical connecting bar 11, the lower part of which is connected to the pedal 9 by a hinge pin 12. The upper part of the connecting bar 11 has the shape of an eye 13 rotating on an axis 14 carried by a crank 15 fixed to the rear end of the control shaft 5. 'An adjustable stop consisting of a collar 16 provided with a locking screw 17 is mounted on the connecting bar 11 to form an active link between the bar and the riveting anvil mechanism of the machine generally indicated at 18.
The riveting mechanism 18 and the adjustable table 19 on which the work can be placed are both well known per se in broaching machines and therefore further description is not necessary.
As shown more particularly in Figures 9 and 10, a plate cam 20 is mounted eccentrically to the front part of the drive shaft 5 which is located in the stitching head. Two cam grooves 21 and 22 are cut into one face of the cam 20 and as shown in Fig. 9. the grooves are placed on the side of the pivot center of the cam which has the greatest radius. The cam grooves each have an irregular arcuate shape and a pusher 23 rotating on an axis 24 is engaged in the groove 21 and is fixed to the staple shaping mechanism 7 while a pusher 25 rotating on an axis 26. is engaged in the groove 22 and is fixed to the driving mechanism of the clip 8.
The cam 20 also has, on the same side with respect to the pivot center as the arcuate grooves, a lower profile 27 acting on a pusher 28 (see figure 8) rotating in a block 29 which carries the cutting mechanism of the wire described below.
The cam 20 further comprises an upper profile 30 placed on the side opposite to the lower profile 27. The upper profile controls a pusher 31 rotating on an axis 32 carried at the end of an arm 33 of the wire feed lever. 34 which in turn pivots at 35 on the counter-plate 6 of the stitching head.
A spring 36, placed between an upward extension 37 of the lever 34 and a fixing nut 38 mounted on the plate 6, is intended to pull the lever 34 in the direction of clockwise so as to maintain the push-button. evening 31 on the associated profile 30 of the cam.
The staple shaping and depressing elements 7 and 8 placed in the stitching head 6a are enclosed by a hinged cover 39 mounted at the front of the stitching head 6a. in a manner substantially corresponding to the description of UK Patent No. 435,329. At the bottom of the cover slides a stirrup 40 which is returned by a leaf spring 41 to the YY plane (see figure 4) in which the wire is brought into the stirrup and cut to form a staple blank w in the ZZ plane (see Figure 6) in which the clip is formed and driven into the work.
In motorized machines having a rotating control cam, the movement of the caliper inward is caused by the return movements of the elements shaping and driving the clip, such movements being. combined so as to remove the first element before the driver, so that the caliper is free to move inward as soon as the driver loses contact with the inner end of the caliper.
In the present arrangement, since a reciprocating or rocking movement is imparted to the cam 20, the return movements of the elements forming and depressing the staple and also those of the wire feed and cutting levers are identical to respective movements forward but are done in reverse.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
A locking mechanism is therefore provided to ensure that the stirrup 40 and the blank 1: ± do not move forward towards the staple-forming position ZZ before the two elements shaping and pushing it in. have almost reached their top dead center.
As shown in Figures 3 to 6 and Figure 1a the locking mechanism comprises a vertical latch sliding in a vertical guide formed in the cover 39 and held in place by a plate 43 screwed to the cover. The latch has at its lower part an extension 44 which, when the latch is in its extreme downward position, is intended to engage behind a shoulder 45 of the caliper 40 (FIG. 8), in order to hold the latter in an outward position or in advance. The upper end of the latch is folded back to form a tab 46 which passes through a slot 47 in the cover and extends into the stitching head; it can come into contact with the upper part of the staple driver 8 when the latter approaches its top dead center.
The latch is pushed down by a compressed spring 48 placed between the tab 46 and the pin 49 fixed in the cover.
The reserve of thread is driven into the yoke of a spool 50 rotating on a support 51 placed above the stitching head. The yarn passes around a side guide 52 attached to the lower end of the yarn advance lever 34 and thence through a slot 53 in the lever 34. During the advancing movement of the lever 34, the yarn passes through a slot 53 in the lever 34. wire is gripped in a known manner., by a claw 57 pulled by a spring and not allowing the return, intended to hold the wire which has been brought into a cutting tube 58 fixed to the lower part of the plate support.
This plate has an arm 59 against which a projection 60 of the wire advance arm 34 can abut and said support plate is fixed in an adjustable manner on the stitching head by means of a wing screw 61 in order to allow adjustment of the length of the wire introduced into the caliper. A mark 62 on the support plate 56 which moves in front of the graduations 63 marked on the front of the stitching head, facilitates the positioning of the plate 56 according to the length required for the advance of the machine. .wire.
The cutting mechanism comprises a knife 64 attached to an extended forward portion 65 (see figure 8) of the block 29 which pivots on the support plate 56 and which is pressed by a spring 66 such that the pusher 28 of the block 29 is pushed upwards to come into contact with the lower profile 27 of the cam 20. The knife 64 is arranged so as to cut a length of wire fed into the caliper when the pusher 28 is inserted by a boss 27a of the lower profile 27 of the cam.
The locking mechanism is controlled by the cutting mechanism by means of a toggle system comprising a trigger lever 67 mounted on a pivot 68 fixed on the support plate 56. The lever 67 carries at its free end a slide 69 intended for slide along a transverse guide 70 formed in the latch 42. The lever 67 also has a nose 71 intended to engage with a projection 72 of the anterior part 65 of the block 29 so as to hold the latch in the latch. raised position. Part 65 is also provided with a pin 73 which can engage with non-return claw 57 in order to keep the latter out of reach of the yarn during the movement of advancing the yarn.
In order to show the functional relationships between the elements of the stitching mechanism, we will now describe the cycle of operations from the moment when the parts of the stitching head mechanism are approximately in the position shown in Figures 3 and 4 and where the staple driver and staple driver are about to descend to form and drive a staple into the work (shown schematically at W in figure 6). The wire feed lever 34 is in or near its fully retracted position and the lower profile 27 of the cam 20 has disengaged from the pusher 28 so that the block 29 which carries the knife 64 is raised and the spindle 73 carried by the block 29 is in contact with the claw 57 of

no return so as to keep the claw 57 out of action.
The yoke 40, carrying a cut clip blank w is held in its extreme interior position by the spring 41 in order to place the blank w in the plane of formation and insertion of the clip. The latch 42 is maintained in its extreme elevated position by means of the release lever 67, the rotation of which is prevented by the contact of the nose 71 of the lever on the projection 72 of the block 29.
After further movements up to this point, the pedal 9 is depressed so as to move the vertical link bar 11 upwards and to tilt the cam 20 in a clockwise direction by the through the crank 15 and the control shaft 5. The staple feeder 7 followed by the driver 8 moves downwards to take the free ends of the blank w and form the branches. of the clip on the yoke 40. During this part of the cycle, the latch 42 remains held in its raised position by the release lever 67. As the driver descends, it meets the inner end of the latch. yoke and pushes it outwards to the wire feed position.
The profile 30 of the cam pushes the pusher 31 which switches the lever 34 for advancing the wire in the anti-clockwise direction, that is to say in the anti-clockwise direction so as to make advance the reserve wire through the caliper through the cutting tube 58. When the staple shaper 7 reaches its bottom dead center, the pusher 28 of the cutting mechanism meets the lower boss 27a of the cam forcing the knife 64 moving across the end of tube 58 and cutting the wire fed into the yoke. When the knife is moved, the pin 73 is released from the non-return claw 57, thus allowing the latter to grip and hold the reserve wire.
The engagement lever 67 is simultaneously released from the projection 72, which allows the latch 42 to descend under the action of the spring 48 and the extension 44 of the latch engages behind the shoulder 45 of the caliper and therefore., the stirrup is maintained in the retracted or wire advance position.
The parts then occupy the relative positions shown in the figu-. res 5 and 6. Continuation of the rotation of the cam 20 in the clockwise direction lowers the shaper and the staple driver to complete the driving operation and the final riveting of the staple. in the room.
When the foot control is released, the weight of the link bar 11 and associated linkage causes the actuator shaft 5 and cam 20 to swing counterclockwise. The staple driver and staple shaper move upwards. making their return journey and the wire feed lever 34 also begins its return movement in the clockwise direction.
The return movements of these elements are similar to the respective advance movements but are done in the opposite direction; thus. the staple driver rises before the staple shaper. However, the stirrup cannot move inward with the cut blank because it is still held in the wire feed position by the extension 44 of the latch. When the driver 8 approaches its top dead center., it meets the tongue.
46 from the latch and lifts the latch 9 thereby releasing the yoke 40 and allowing it to move with the cut blank inward for the next cycle of forming and driving a clip. During this time, the wire feed lever 34 has reached its fully retracted position in which the projection 60 is in contact with the arm 59 of the support plate 56 and the lower profile 27 of the cam has disengaged from it. pusher 28 of the cutting mechanism.
As a result, the block 29 of the cutting mechanism has jumped upwards under the action of the spring 66 so that the pin 73 re-engages in the non-return grid and maintains it in its released position ready for arrival. a new length of wire during the next cycle of operations.
It should be noted that the crank 15, the link bar 11 and the associated parts are preferably constructed and arranged to substantially balance the cam on one side and the control pedal 9 on the other.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In this way, a minimum of effort is required to depress the pedal to complete a staple forming and depressing stroke while as soon as pressure is released on the pedal the parts automatically return to their normal positions.
It will be understood that the pedal device for controlling the machine can be replaced by a lever provided for operating the machine by hand.
The stitching head, as described above, allows a relatively small cam to be used and this cam can be attached to the drive shaft and fully enclosed in the stitching head in the same way as in a stapler. motor machine. The grooves and profiles of the cam for the pushers of the various elements are placed relative to the pivoting center of the cam so as to facilitate the balancing of the cam while shortening the profiles of the cam and a better availability is obtained. sition of levers than that existing in control systems hitherto used in broaching machines operated by foot or by hand.
The control links between the moulder and the staple driver, the wire feed mechanism and the cutting mechanism are similar to those of motor-driven machines and they are designed to leave the maximum for the machine. period of advance of new wire lengths in the caliper prepared for the next broaching cycle. This is of particular importance for operator operated machines to ensure that a constant length of wire is fed to the yoke with each cycle. Furthermore, this arrangement reduces the possibility of forming a wire loop if an incomplete stroke inadvertently occurs.
The construction allows an operator-operated machine to look like and cycle like a motor-driven broaching machine and retain virtually all of the benefits of the latter.
It is also common practice to form and drive the staples in a direction perpendicular to that shown in the example given.
In this case, the housing 6 and all the mechanism therein are placed parallel to the control shaft 5 shown in figure 2 and a right angle transmission such as a pair of bevel gears is introduced. equal between the shaft 5 shown in Figure 2 and a shaft 5 shown in Figure 9, the latter becoming a small piece of separate shaft housed in the frame and carrying the cam 20 at its active end no part of the invention not being affected by this fact
