Elle consiste, surtout, à agencer de manière te@ le les allumeurs du genre en(.question qu'ils puissent être, amenés à l'état incandescent à l'aide d'un courant éléctri- que approprié en comportant une résistance électrique ap- propriée (qui peut être recouverte d'un isolant) et nui esi logée ,dans une pièce, en une matière réfractaire, telle que de la terre réfractaire logée, à son tour, dans un ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Improvements brought to lighters in the shape of a" poker ".
The invention relates to "poker" shaped lighters for lighting chrbon lights or the like and it aims to make these devices such that they are very efficient, useful and clean.
It consists, above all, in arranging in such a way the igniters of the kind in question (.question that they can be, brought to the incandescent state by means of an appropriate electric current by comprising an electrical resistance ap - property (which can be covered with an insulation) and nui esi lodged, in a room, in a refractory material, such as refractory earth lodged, in turn, in a;
tube of a suitable metal, this tube being bent in any suitable shape, the two ends of the metal tube being mon-

tocs on a handle made of an insulating material and the two ends of the resistance wire being connected to conductors insulated from one another and passing through the insulating handle in order to be able to be connected, by a suitable socket, to an electrical installation. If desired, a replaceable fuse can be inserted at a suitable point in the circuit.
When using the device, we introduce the E! part of the tube, which lies beyond the handle, in the hull, coal, rapeseed or the like lying on a grid, if necessary using the retort apparatus of a poker, after which we connect the socket and let the current flow. After a short time, the resistor heats up the igniter and the de- metal tube. comes glowing.
It is easy to understand, when the poker is left in place for a short period, that the ignition of the: eu, The circuit can then be interrupted and the poker removed, the removal may be delayed, if it is desired, until the device ceases to glow.
It is obvious that the poker can be made in a variety of different shapes, but for the most part, methods suitable for practicing the invention involve making the outer metal tube of mild steel and giving it a suitable diameter and thickness. This tube surrounds a part, made of an ordinary refractory material, such as refractory earth or the like, which is itself tubular or in which is coated a heating element (fig wound in a helix) so that this element does not is not in contact with the outer metal tube.
The two ends of the tube are engaged in one end of a handle, made of an insulating material, and from one end of which passes through wires, for example - 2 -

ple an ordinary cord, which can be connected by a socket suitable for home instruction.
The two ends of the metal tube are enclosed by the desired distance and in the vicinity of the handle, they come out parallel therefrom along straight parts which can be surrounded by sleeves of an electrically insulating and / or refractory material.
Beyond these straight parts, the two tubular parts can be straight or they can be curved, while remaining substantially parallel and in the same plane, to receive any suitable shape to constitute the "useful" part of 1. - igniter.
Thus, for example, a spiral shape can be adapted, the turns of which become smaller and smaller as the tubes are joined at the central part by a short S-curved part. In reality this last curved part forms a double neck forming an integral part of the same two-plug tube.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Figs. 1 and 2 show, respectively 'in elevation (parts broken away) and in side view, an igniter in the form of an electric poker, established according to the invention.
At the upper part of fig. 2 we have shown a mild steel tube (folded over on itself) and curved in a double spiral and whose internal ends are connected together, the whole affecting the shape that sometimes adopted for hotplates, dish warmers or the like. The assembly ends with two rectilinear branches 3 and 4 clamped in a ring 5 to which is attached a tubular handle 6 of the desired length.
In the hollow handle and in the axial passage of a handle 7, mounted on it, are housed ron--

Insulated and frustoconical loops surrounding a flexible three-wire cord, one terminating at branch 3, another at bronchus 4 and the other being connected to earth. In the mild steel tube is housed, in the usual manner, a heating element 11, consisting of a wire wound in a helix, and part of which is shown in fig. 1, this wire being coated in clay. refractory and insulating so as to be isolated from the metal walls of the outer tube. This corresponds to the ordinary constitution of certain heating devices.
The handle 7 is extended by a sleeve 8 made of an insulating material and carrying a protective and flexible sheath 9, made of rubber, and through which passes the cord 10 with multiple wires. The latter ends with a socket or the like (not shown) with the help of which it can be connected to a domestic electrical installation. The third wire of cord 10 is connected to earth and is connected inside the clamping sleeve 5 (made of metal) as shown at 12 in fig.l.
To use the device, part 13 is placed, consisting of the metal tube bent into a double spiral and containing the heating element 11 and yes forms a flat assembly in the form of a grid, on the desired layer (the fine coal, coke or any other fuel which is in a hearth The upper face of the grate 13 is covered with another layer of fine coal or the like and the appliance is connected to the network. You can easily see how the charcoal is ignited in a short time using the glowing grate.
The current is then interrupted and the grid can be released from the hearth using the handle 7 which, of course, has remained outside of the latter. @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
For other embodiments of the invention, the tube can be bent so that it lies in a plane and its front part has a pointed shape which facilitates its insertion, by pushing, in a mass of coal contained in a hearth. For this purpose it is possible, for example, to give the apparatus the shape of a flat and slightly pointed skin.
Likewise, it is possible, if desired, to replace the flat grid with a piece of concave or convex shape, so that, when its upper face is concave, a certain quantity of small coal can be deposited thereon. In addition, in a simple form, the poker can comprise a metal tube with a single loop, established in the extension of the handle, the lateral parts of the loop being parallel or not being, for example, in zig. -zag or wavy shape.
As goes without saying and as it already follows from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, having been more especially indicated; embraces, on the contrary, all the variants.
