<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Quelques exemples d'application sont très suncinctement schématisés aux dessina annexés, dans lesquels: les figures I, 2 et 3 illustrent le procédé de carbo- misatiôn dont la mise en oeuvre ne requièrt pratiquement aucune connaissance très spéciale; la figure 4 schématise un four de carbonisation en coupe transversal e; la figure 5 en est une vue en plan; la figure 6 est une coupe transversale par le foyer de l'appareils le fond amovible étant en position d'ouverture; la figure 7 représente en coupe transversale un appareil combiné avec une grille de sectionnement; la figure 8 représente une autre variante de l'appareil combiné avec un dispositif de broyage des matières carbonisées;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

M E M O I R E DESCRIPTION filed in support of an application for B R E V E T OF INVENTION Antoine VLOEBERGHS, "Process and oven for carbonization".
The invention relates to a new process for the carbonization of vegetable matter of reduced volume and more particularly for the carbonization of slash. The invention extends to the equipment and more particularly to the combination of a portable oven and an indefinite number of dampers fitted out with a view to being able to apply this method.
The aim of the invention is to provide a means capable of economically carbonizing plant materials, such as slash, taking into account the very special conditions of this industrial problem and more particularly the need to be able to work on site, to reduce to minimum the milled transport and more particularly the transport of non-carbonized materials. More specifically, transport
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
slash is very expensive because of their excessive bulk relative to their weight, while, on the contrary, the transport of finely divided carbonized elements is very advantageous because of their relatively high specific weight.
The process, object of the invention, and the material which results therefrom, are more particularly applicable in all cases where the efficiency of the actual carbonization can be slightly neglected in favor of the greater benefits which can be obtained by the possibility of working on site, of having material reduced to a minimum and, finally, by the application of transport exclusively to carbonised materials.
The method, object of the invention, consists essentially of an extremely simple and light portable carbonization furnace, the bottom of which is removable, with a view to allowing the almost instantaneous evacuation of the carbonized materials while allowing the furnace to be kept in operation. This portable oven rests directly on a receptacle forming a damper. When the damper is filled with carbonized materials, the oven, unlike all known methods, is moved to another damper, while the former is hermetically sealed in the known manner. It is thus possible to move the portable smothering furnace in the same place where the products to be carbonized and more particularly the residues are located.
By oc process and the extremely simple material which it allows to apply, it is therefore possible to organize an exploitation of carbonization of the slash on site under extremely economical conditions $ *
The portable oven capable of applying such a process is extremely simple since it can be reduced to a simple hopper internally extended by the hearth proper, generally of cylindrical shape.
The bottom of the hearth is removable, so as to be able to abandon the material which it temporarily supports. This device is simply placed on a damper and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
it can be moved manually, its weight being reduced.
Such a furnace can obviously be produced in very different ways and supplemented with accessories capable of giving the finished products greater value, or even with a view to facilitating the use of this material.
Some application examples are very clearly schematized in the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGS. I, 2 and 3 illustrate the carbonization process, the implementation of which requires practically no very special knowledge; FIG. 4 is a diagram of a carbonization furnace in cross section e; Figure 5 is a plan view; FIG. 6 is a cross section through the hearth of the apparatus, the removable bottom being in the open position; FIG. 7 shows in cross section an apparatus combined with a sectioning grid; FIG. 8 shows another variant of the apparatus combined with a device for grinding the carbonized materials;
, Figure 9 is a section taken on the line IX-IX of Figure 8; FIG. 10 is an alternative embodiment of the device of FIGS. 8 and 9.
According to these various figures, the apparatus consists of the carbonization hearth 1 surmounted by a hopper or funnel 2. This funnel will preferably be very flared in order to ensure continuity in the inactivity of the furnace. Its walls will preferably have an inclination of between 10 and 40. The hearth 1 and the hopper can have any shape, but will preferably be cylindrical and conical respectively. The base of the hearth is removable and consists for example of two semi-circular plates 3, 4, each mounted around a pivot axis, respectively 5, 6.
The two constituent plates of the bottom can be moved by rotation around the rods,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
respectively 5, by an appropriate linkage. For example, as shown schematically in Figures 4, 5 and 6, the plate 1 may be secured to a rigid lever 7 auouel is secured to the second bottom plate 4, through the intervention of a lever 8 and a link 9 As a result, by exerting traction on the first lever 7, so! rotate the corresponding plate 3 around its rod 5, the second bottom plate is driven in the same movement 49 After this movement, the material previously supported by the bottom can flow by gravity into the underlying damper 10 on which is simply placed the carbonization furnace.
It is easy to put this particularly simple material into practice. In fact, to start the carbonization furnace, it suffices to load a few twigs on the base plates 2., 4. and to light them in the manner of an ordinary fire. Then, when these twigs are well ignited, the loading of the hopper 2 is continued. The latter will always be kept perfectly full by periodic supply of slash, which can be simply loaded, for example with the fork. Periodically, the bottom plates of the hearth are operated, so as to evacuate the charred material towards the lower damper. The periodicity of this maneuver is quickly appreciated by the worker. When the damper is full, it suffices to transport the device on a second damper placed near the first.
For this purpose, the apparatus comprises two rings 11, 12, preferably placed at the origin of the funnel 2, in which it is sufficient to pass perched, so that the apparatus can be easily transported by two men. Evodemmetn, after removing and moving the oven, the first funnel is completely reopened until the charcoal thus produced has cooled completely.
It is thus possible, by moving the choke apparatus into a choke, to walk in the woods, so as to be transported progressively to all the places where remanents meet * The capacity of the chokes, the duration of their filling, the duration .of carbonisa-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The number and duration of the total cooling of the carbonized material determining the number of dampers required for continuous production run.
This basic installation can of course be supplemented with additional devices. For example, if one wishes to admit in the damper only carbonized materials µ * a determined maximum modulus, it is possible, between the mobile bottom of the device and the underlying damper to interpose a device @ capable of reducing larger carbonized materials at the desired modulus.
L & Figure 7 sohematizes for this purpose the combination of the fixed oven proper with a grid surmounted by a mobile grid 14. When opening the movable bottom by tilting the bottom plates, 3, 4, it suffices to -move the movable grid 14 with a more or less rapid back and forth movement, so as to break up the larger elements which would tend to pass through this double grid. The mobile grid 14 is provided with a (handle 15 which allows the maneuver.
According to Figures 8 and 9, the grid system can be replaced by a small grinding hearth formed, for example, by two rolls 16, 17, both capable of being driven at the same speed, but in the opposite direction, at the intervention of two toothed wheels 18, 19 and the crank 20.
This device, like any other moreover, intermediate between the oven proper and 1 damper, can be directly carried by the device (Figures 8 and 9) or form part of an intermediate device that can be or not at will to dispose between the oven and the damper.
FIG. 10 shows schematically the second application, the crusher being housed in an oarter 21 capable of being nested on the upper part of the damper 10 and of supporting the upper part of the carbonization furnace. According to this figure 10, the latter has been improved, with a view to being covered,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
being thus sheltered more particularly from the rain or the fall of any objects. For this purpose, the hopper! is provided with uprights 22 supporting any covering element 23, such as for example a very fine mesh, a wire mesh, a plate or any other similar device.
It is therefore noted that independently of the principle in itself, the device can be adapted in very different ways.
On the other hand, it is possible to give this apparatus practically any size and, consequently, to provide any useful capacity.
