<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
Apparatus for the continuous manufacture of metal pipes and ingots
<EMI ID = 1.1>
An apparatus for the continuous manufacture of metal pipes and molded hollow ingots is disclosed. In
<EMI ID = 2.1>
in a mold open on two sides and in the middle of which is placed a generally conical mandrel. At the start of this continuous production of molded articles, a plug is introduced into the outlet opening of the mold open on both sides, which plug prevents the flow of metal through the lower part of the mold. On the surface - of this buffer are usually fixed one or more tenons where one or more recesses are dug, on the surface of which the metal of the molded part can contract completely in order to be able to then remove this part after solidification of the metal to using cylinders or the like.
When using hollow mandrels, cooled by liquid refrigerants, one is particularly exposed to the danger
<EMI ID = 3.1>
that it solidifies. The consequence of this contraction is that the
mandrel breaks easily and it can occur, if necessary,
<EMI ID = 4.1>
<EMI ID = 5.1>
to fix an uncooled protective pipe, on the buffer, which closes
<EMI ID = 6.1>
This fixing is made in such a way that, when the plug is pressed into the mold, the pipe so tightly grips the conical mandrel flush with the upper level of the metal sheet formed, that no drop of liquid metal can flow between this mandrel. and the protective pipe.
But in the continued manufacture of metal tubes or molded hollow ingots using such an apparatus, it has been found that when the tampon, provided with its protective tube, performs small downward movements, as it does. To adjust the position of the setbacks, the bearing surface of the protective tube on the mandrel no longer presents any sealing due to the tapered conical shape of this mandrel. The other consequences of this fact are, that from this moment, the liquid metal can flow between the mandrel and the protective tube and that in addition, the molten metal comes directly into contact with the cooled mandrel and contracts, if applicable, on the latter.
The invention remedies this state of affairs and obtains this result as follows: the wall of the internal channel of the priming head, (necessary at the start of continuous manufacturing
metal tubes or molded hollow ingots), which is in contact with the mandrel, conforms to the taper of this mandrel. A longer sealing surface is thus obtained than with the aforementioned protective tube, which makes it possible to prevent the flow of fused metal between the starting head and the mandrel, even when the movements of this head are sufficiently large, and without it being necessary yet to use special garnishes for this purpose. He is not
at all necessary, in this case, that the inner canal of the head
priming matches, over its entire length, the taper of the mandrel,
but it is sufficient that this conformity of the wall of the channel is achieved in the upper part of the priming head.
According to another embodiment of the invention,
the sealing of the seal between the priming head and the mandrel may
be obtained by an intermediate piece interposed between this mandrel and the priming head. The surface of this part in contact
with the mandrel matches the taper of the latter. Use
of such an intermediate piece in accordance with the invention is therefore particularly advantageous because, when manufacturing
hollow ingots of different diameters, the taper of the mandrel
must be a function, in each case, of the diameter of the internal channel
of the object to be manufactured.This would have the consequence that with
mandrels with different taper it would be necessary, for each taper,
a priming head whose inner channel would have a shape corresponding to the taper of the mandrel. By using inserts in accordance with the invention, having a suitable taper,
depending on that of the chuck, you only need one head
cylindrical priming to which are then added the various added parts.
The other characteristics and advantages of the invention
emerge from the following description in which we comment
with the help of the attached drawings, examples of
invention.
In figures 1 and 2 the liquid metal used for the
casting is brought in a known manner and with known means,
in the annular space 4 formed by the cooled mold 1, of
known type, and by the mandrel 2, housed in the axis of this mold. These known means are not shown further in the figures. The mandrel 2 is maintained in its position concentric with the mold by a suspension cross member 3. The flow of metal
used for casting through mold 1 open on both sides,
is prevented in a known manner by the priming head 5 which is
introduced into the bottom of the mold 1. The internal channel of the head
priming 5 has an annular surface 6 which hugs the. taper of the mandrel. If this priming head 5 is introduced into the
mold, it forms a tight seal with the mandrel 2, which prevents
liquid metal to flow between the chuck and the priming head
at the start of the continuous production of molded objects.
In the example of figure 2, the sealing of the joints
against the flow of metal er fusion is not carried out directly between the mandrel 2 and the priming head 5. It is, on the contrary, carried out indirectly via the part
rs.portée 7, of which the annular contact surface with this mandrel
marries the conicity of the latter.
