Manufacturing process of very bright zinc-plated projector mirrors on a steel support.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing high-gloss zinc-plated projector mirrors, the gloss coating of which is applied to a steel support.
It has been found that such very shiny and polished zinc-plated projector mirrors easily become, at least in places, dull and even completely dull. This phenomenon can occur in service, but often already during the manufacture of mirrors, in particular during the drying of the layer of varnish applied for the protection of the surface of the mirror.
The search for the causes of this drawback, which led to the invention, first of all made it possible to recognize that the phenomenon in question is to be attributed to the heating of the mirrors and is

already produced when the temperature reaches approx. 70 C. Temperatures of this order can, however, occur not only during the already mentioned drying of the varnish layer, but also during operation, ie when the mirror is used as a projector.
The exact cause that makes mirrors dull or dull is not yet fully determined. However, the research carried out so far allows us to suppose that it is a question of certain phenomena of increase or of transposition of the grain of the galvanic layer of zinc, caused or at least favored by the rise in temperature.
The logical deepening of these first observations has led to the surprising finding that the tarnish so harmful in practice of the zinc-plated mirrors of projectors can be avoided by an appropriate preventive heat treatment. The invention therefore consists in heating the zinc-plated support of the mirror before polishing, to a temperature exceeding the highest temperature which may occur during manufacture or use. projector.
A suitable embodiment of the invention consists in applying temperatures which exceed by about 50 to 80 ° C. the maximum temperatures which the mirror can reach during manufacture or in service, the duration of the heating being advantageous. from 15 to 40 minutes. A temperature of 120-150 ° C. has proved to be particularly favorable not only for carrying out the invention, but also for the industrial conditions of drying mirrors.
A particular advantage is obtained on the other hand, if the heating of the zinc-coated supports of the mirrors takes place immediately after their rinsing which follows the zinc coating. This makes it possible, in fact, to eliminate the drying, which would otherwise be necessary, of the galvanized support.

High quality mirrors sometimes have an additional layer of silver applied to the zinc layer.
Since the undesirable phenomenon of tarnishing can also occur with mirrors of this type, it is advisable to subject these mirrors also to the treatment according to the invention.
The invention described makes it possible to manufacture, without additional operations and without other disadvantages, projector mirrors which can be used in practice, which comprise a very shiny zinc coating applied to a steel support and which do not lose. their qualities during use as projectors.
