<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
De plus, on a constaté que les dispositifs d'essorage par couteaux d'air présentent plusieurs inconvénients lors de leur utilisation, à savoir : - difficulté de maintenir une bonne homogénéité de l'épaisseur tant dans le sens transversal par rapport au défilement de la bande que longitudinal du fait que ce dispositif pneumatique est très sensible à la position relative ou distance entre la bande et les tuyères des couteaux d'air ; cette distance étant d'autant plus difficile à contrôler que la longueur de la bande montante depuis la sortie du bain jusqu'au rouleau déflecteur supérieur est plus grande, car la bande y subit des vibrations d'amplitudes croissantes avec la longueur ascendante précitée ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Cette manière de faire agir les deux modes d'essorage et d'utiliser les inducteurs pour le chauffage de l'opération de formation de l'alliage Zn-Fe entraîne les effets bénéfiques suivants : - suppression des éclaboussures, car on peut diminuer la pression d'air dans les couteaux ; - gain d'encombrement de la ligne, car le système de chauffage est Intégré à l'essorage, avec de plus une stabilité meilleure de la bande dans le brin montant du fait de sa réduction de longueur ; - autocentrage de la bande par l'action des champs électromagnétiques et amélioration de la qualité du revêtement ; - abaissement du niveau du bruit généré grâce à la diminution de la pression d'air aux couteaux et de la longueur du brin montant ;

Method of coating a steel strip by dip galvanizing. The present invention relates to a method of coating a steel strip by dip galvanizing.
It is well known that steel is a building material of choice for many fields of application. Its high mechanical strength, as well as its great ability to form, weld and apply protective or decorative coatings are properties whose technical interest has long been recognized. In addition, its advantageous cost price and its very good recyclability also make it attractive from an economic point of view.
Steel is however subject to corrosion by various aggressive agents, in particular by snow-removing salts in the case of motor vehicles, and it must be protected in order to maintain its strength properties for many years.
Among the many materials used to protect steel against corrosion, zinc has proved to be particularly interesting, in particular because of its sacrificial behavior, well known to those skilled in the art. At the industrial level, two main techniques for depositing zinc on steel are currently applied, namely electrolytic deposition and the so-called "dip" method.
The principle of dip galvanizing consists, in principle, of coating a piece of steel by immersing it in a bath of liquid zinc. Before being immersed in the zinc bath, the part must however undergo an appropriate surface preparation.
In practice, the galvanization of a steel strip essentially comprises first passing the strip through an oven containing a reducing atmosphere at a temperature of the order of 650 ° C. to 8500 ° C. for a cold rolled steel strip and at a temperature of the order of 500 ° C. to 6500 ° C. for a hot rolled steel strip, in order to obtain, before immersion in the zinc bath, a steel strip
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
recrystallized and having a cleaned and brightened surface. The strip then passes through a cooling section before entering a bath of molten zinc and finally undergoes an adjustment of the thickness of the zinc layer before its final cooling.
The thickness is generally adjusted using flat jets of compressed gas, usually air, called "air knives" or "wringers".
The dip galvanizing bath usually consists of zinc to which a small amount of aluminum has been added, usually less than 1% by weight, in order to avoid the formation of solid Zn-Fe intermetallic compounds at the interface between the coating. zinc and the steel substrate. In the presence of pure zinc, these compounds would develop in an anarchic way during the immersion of the steel strip in the liquid zinc, which strongly harms the spinning of the strip. In addition, they can form a fragile zone unfavorable to the adhesion and the consistency of the coating.
Aluminum reacts faster than zinc with the surface of steel and forms an intermediate layer of an intermetallic compound most often identified as FeAtg. This intermediate layer slows down or can even prevent the further development of Zn-Fe type intermetallic compounds. For this reason, it is sometimes called the "inhibitory layer"; it typically has a thickness of the order of a tenth deum.
Other zinc-based coating alloys are also known for protecting steel, in particular a Zn-Fe alloy containing from 7% to 13% by weight of iron.
The steel strips coated with this alloy have significant advantages over zinc-coated steels: better corrosion resistance, improved weldability thanks to reduced wear of the spot welding electrodes, reinforced adhesion of the paint, less marked surface defects.
Such a coating layer of Zn-Fe alloy is produced in two stages, namely a first dip coating step followed by an annealing step intended to cause the formation of a Zn-Fe alloy by diffusion between the layer of deposited zinc and iron from the substrate. This process, often called "treatment of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
galvannealing ", is currently well known and widely used in the industry.
However, it appeared that this process was not always applicable under the best conditions, in particular due to the difference in reactivity of the steels during the annealing to form the Zn-Fe alloy. Resistance steels, as used in the automotive industry, have a high phosphorus content, of the order of 0.05% to 0.1% by weight, and give rise to the formation of an inhibiting layer. very stable which strongly delays the formation of the desired Zn-Fe alloy.
This drawback can be mitigated either by increasing the temperatures of the annealing to form the Zn-Fe alloy, or by reducing the speed of the coating line to lengthen the duration of the treatment; however, these solutions lead to yield losses which make them uneconomic.
Another drawback lies in the need to reduce the aluminum content of the galvanizing bath, so as to allow the formation of this Zn-Fe alloy. In practice, however, galvanizing lines produce strips that are either galvanized, c. at. d. simply coated with zinc, ie "galvannealed", c. at. d. coated with the above-mentioned Zn-Fe alloy. This diversity currently requires changing the bath used to coat the strip, either by exchanging the tank or by emptying the tank and replacing the bath, during a production change. This operation requires several hours of work and a corresponding immobilization of the coating line.
In the above context, the applicant has developed various solutions to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks, c. at. d. to form a deposit of the Zn-Fe alloy on all steel grades, in a simple and economical way, without harming the productivity of the coating lines and without requiring the change of coating bath in the event of a change in production.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
One of them consists in applying to the coated strip an intense surface heating between the exit from the galvanizing bath and the start of the annealing to form the Zn-Fe alloy.
However, during practical implementation, it is observed that the steel strip is subjected to the exit from the galvanizing bath, in the order of its vertical progression towards a return cylinder, first of all with a spin by air knives as mentioned above, then rapid heating, the two operations having to be done sufficiently
EMI4.1
early before the upper return cylinder of the strip so that the coating has had time to cool so as not to be damaged when the strip passes over said return cylinder.
In fact, it is therefore necessary to lengthen this ascending portion of the installation in order to operate in this way, which presents additional operating costs.
In addition, it has been found that the air knife wringing devices have several drawbacks during their use, namely: - difficulty in maintaining good uniformity of the thickness both in the transverse direction relative to the travel of the strip as longitudinal because this pneumatic device is very sensitive to the relative position or distance between the strip and the nozzles of the air knives; this distance being all the more difficult to control as the length of the rising strip from the outlet of the bath to the upper deflector roller is greater, because the strip undergoes vibrations there of increasing amplitudes with the above-mentioned ascending length;
- unsatisfactory functioning of the device when it is desired to operate thin coatings, since we then observe phenomena of instability of the air jets with harmful effects such as increases in the amount of zinc deposited and splashes which can obstruct the air knife nozzles; - a very high noise level proportional to the air pressure used in the air knives.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The aforementioned drawbacks have led to the development of wiping devices in which electromagnetic fields are used which generate forces in the zinc coating intended to counteract the aforementioned harmful effects.
However, it has been found that the magnetic spin causes an increase in the temperature of the strip and of its liquid coating.
Analysis, on the one hand, of the various operating parameters of a galvanizing line using an air knife wringing device with the intervention of electromagnetic fields to compensate for certain harmful effects of the aforementioned air knives, and on the other hand, modalities of the annealing of formation of the Zn-Fe alloy carried out on the coated strip in question, gave rise to the new process below.
The method of coating a steel strip by dip galvanizing, object of the present invention, in which the strip undergoes a combined spin of the gas knife and electromagnetic field type and a treatment for forming the Zn alloy. -Fe by annealing, is essentially characterized in that the heating operation of the strip and its coating to form the Zn-Fe alloy is carried out in whole or in part by means of the devices generating electromagnetic fields included in the device d 'combined spin, especially those operating electromagnetic spin.
This modality has the effect of shortening the length of the vertical section at the outlet from the coating bath necessary to operate on the one hand wringing the strip and on the other hand heating the annealing to form the Zn-Fe alloy . As a result, the path required for the coating to be sufficiently cooled to pass over the upper deflection roller without being damaged is reduced, since the heating is carried out directly as soon as the strip leaves the galvanizing tank.
According to a preferred form of the process of the invention, the operational conditions of the heating inductors for the annealing of the formation of the layer are regulated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Zn-Fe so that the induced fields carry out an electromagnetic spin while ensuring the rise in temperature necessary for the annealing in question.
According to another preferred mode of the method of the invention, the operational conditions of the inductors carrying out the electromagnetic spinning are regulated so that the induced fields used in the electromagnetic spinning provide the rise in temperature necessary for the annealing of formation of the ZnFe alloy.
According to yet another preferred method of the invention, the operating conditions of the inductors carrying out the electromagnetic spinning are separately regulated so as to produce spinning and / or heating effects which differ from one face of the strip by relation to the other side; preferably one operates in such a way as to ensure a different temperature rise according to the faces of the strip and this as a function of specific coating operations relating to each face, such as for example a difference in thickness or a distinct subsequent finish such as is the case of galvanized and galvannealing.
The present invention also relates to a device for implementing the method of the invention.
The device, intended for implementing the method of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that the inductors generating electromagnetic fields form an integral part of the combined spinning device; more particularly, these inductors, all or some of them, form part of the pneumatic wiping device.
According to a preferred embodiment of the device of the invention, all or some of the inductors generating electromagnetic fields are placed in the lips of the pneumatic spinning knives.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
This new operational procedure allows the operating limits of the conventional pneumatic spinning system to be reduced.
Indeed, if we consider a coating line working at a defined speed to obtain a coating of constant thickness, the simultaneous existence at the outlet of the coating bath of the effects of spinning the air knives of a on the one hand and electromagnetic forces on the other, allows finer control of the thickness.
This way of making the two spin modes act and of using the inductors for heating the operation for forming the Zn-Fe alloy has the following beneficial effects: - elimination of splashes, since the pressure can be reduced air in the knives; - space saving of the line, because the heating system is integrated into the spin, with more stability of the strip in the rising strand due to its reduction in length; - self-centering of the strip by the action of electromagnetic fields and improvement of the quality of the coating; - lowering of the noise level generated by the reduction of the air pressure at the knives and the length of the rising strand;
- possibility of applying to each side of a steel strip coatings with different characteristics, hence greater flexibility in the use of the galvanizing line.
