<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Improvements in devices intended to control the gas supply to burners in installations for the heating of water, such as: water heaters, bath heaters, boilers and the like.
@
The invention relates to devices intended to control the gas supply to burners in installations for heating water, such as water heaters, bath heaters, boilers and the like.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for closing the gas supply in the event that the water supply fails, for example, as a result of the shutdown of the general pipe.
Devices have been proposed for regulating the gas supply of bath heaters and the like in connection with the water supply, comprising diaphragms which are operated by the pressure of the water or by the suction. produced by the flow of water in a conduit, said diaphragms being connected to the main gas control valve so
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to keep it open as long as water is supplied to the water heater, the main gas valve being closed automatically if the water pressure or the current fails.
In accordance with the present invention, the valve or the main gas tap comprises means intended to ensure its automatic closing, these means being under the control of a thermostat heated by one or more flames which remain on, at least all the time. that the main burner (s) must operate, said flame (s) being supplied with gas under the control of a valve actuated in connection with the water supply, under conditions such as, in the event that the water supply is lacking , the gas supply to said flame (s) is cut off and no heat is supplied to the thermostat, which has the effect of activating the automatic closing means and cutting off the gas supply to the main burners .
Said flame (s) preferably serve to relight the main burner in the event that the latter is accidentally extinguished, the gas supply to the main burner being cut off if said flame (s) are extinguished or if the water supply fails. Thanks to this arrangement, the means for controlling the gas supply in connection with the water supply can be set up in a very light and compact form, since a relatively small flame is sufficient to maintain. the thermostat in action, and the control valve need only be relatively small.
In one embodiment of the invention, the supply of gas to the pilot burner is controlled by means of a piston enclosed in a small casing which is screwed into the water supply duct, one side of the piston being subjected to the pressure of water in the supply tube and the other side being provided with a rod which projects out of the housing and actuates the pilot gas valve, either directly or through the intermediary of a lever.
To avoid the difficulties of adapting a seal for the piston rod, in order to prevent
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
effectively any water leakage while allowing sufficient freedom of movement, it is preferable to use a diaphragm instead of a piston, said diaphragm being clamped on its edge inside the housing and effectively preventing any leak, while being very sensitive.
In the event that a control device in the form of a piston or diaphragm on which the pressure of the water acts, it is necessary to provide the control device on the side of the valve. tap that controls the water supply to the water heater located towards the downstream. This need does not exist in the case of control devices operating in conjunction with the flow of water, and in cases where the complication and additional expense is not of paramount importance, the housing can communicate with a pipe or a chamber in which a partial vacuum is produced by the flow of water, for example by means of an ejector device arranged in the water pipe.
The ejector device may be in the form of a Venturi tube, the mouth of which communicates with a housing containing a diaphragm, the arrangement being such that the suction produced by the flow of water into the chamber. pipe moves the diaphragm and moves the pilot control valve to the open position.
Instead of the piston or diaphragm rod emerging from the housing, it may be completely enclosed within that housing, with the gas valve being enclosed within the interior of the housing on the side of the diaphragm opposite to the water line or line. or to the suction chamber, and being actuated by the rod of the diaphragm, so as to control the passage of gas through said housing, the gas valve being arranged to open and close an inlet or outlet passage gas in the crankcase.
One embodiment of the gas inlet control device according to the invention is shown by way of example by the appended drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of an assembly; including a gas tap and a water tap.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 2 is a view of the other side of said assembly, the gas valve being shown in vertical section, and,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a detail.
Referring to the drawings, the water valve has a downwardly extending part b, into which is screwed an arm c which extends laterally from the upper end of the gas valve d, the arrangement being such as the key o. of the gas valve is approximately in line with the stem µ of the water valve.
The water tap is operated by means of a hinged finger at an arm g attached to the stem e of the water tap, said finger extending downward and its lower end engaging behind a vertical cleat k a handle 1 fixed to the gas valve, the arrangement being such that, when the water valve is opened, the handle 1 is turned at the same time to open the gas valve. In fact, the finger f is pushed outwards so that it is engaged behind the cleat k, by means of a spring! one end of which rests against a stopper 1 of the arm g, under conditions such that the finger f can be pushed out of engagement with the tab k so as to allow the water tap to open without opening the tap of gas to provide cold water when needed.
The length of the finger! is such that it allows the water tap to be turned beyond the normal closed position, so that, in the event that the washer of said water tap is worn out, the tap can * turned sufficiently to completely shut off the water supply. It is also preferable to arrange the handle 1 in such a way that a space is left between it and the part b in the completely closed position of the gas valve, to allow a certain take-up of play made necessary by wear. of the water tap washer.
The key o of the gas valve comprises a port 2 intended to supply gas to the main burner, said port having the shape of a wide slit so as to allow the passage of the maximum quantity of gas when the water tap is only in the partially open position to allow
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
hot water supply, the arrangement being such that a greater quantity of less hot water can be obtained simply by turning the water tap further to the fully open position. The key o is provided with automatic closing means comprising a coil spring (not shown) which is housed in a recess provided in the underside of the enlarged central part m of the handle l.
One end of the coil spring is attached to the gas valve body and the other end to a toothed disc; which is in engagement with one or more teeth of the handle 1, of a device operating in a similar manner to that described in French patent N 844 764 of October 15, 1938, so as to allow the gas valve to be turned in the fully closed position even when the toothed disc is kept in the open position by means of the thermostat controlled by the pilot flame.The toothed disc has a stop or a notch with which a corresponding connected member engages to the thermostat, which is not shown.
The handle 1 comprises an extension n intended to enter into engagement with an ignition device for the pilot burner.
The gas valve has two superimposed grooves r-v, the lower groove r communicating with a slot p through a groove q and with a passage s which is in communication with a recess 1 provided in the arm c. The upper groove v communicates with the recess t through a passage u and through a duct 1 with the inlet x of the pilot burner x1. By this means a communication is established between the light ± and the night light x1. The gas flow between the passages s. and r is controlled by means of a conical valve z, which rests on the inner end of a hollow key y which is screwed into the recess t, which valve is pressed into contact with said end by a spring 1 .
The valve z comprises a rod 4 which projects out of the key and with which a lever 5 provided on a small axis mounted in a support 6 fixed to part b of the water tap engages, the other
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
end of said axis carrying a lever 7 which is fixed thereto, which bears against the rod of a diaphragm enclosed in a housing 8 screwed onto the water tap. The internal face of the diaphragm communicates with the interior of the water tap, so that when the tap is subjected to the pressure of the water, the rod of the diaphragm is pushed out, which has the effect of pushing the rod 4 of the valve z inwards.
By this means, the passage s is placed in communication with the interior of the hollow key y which comprises one or more radial openings 3 which communicate with the circumferential groove provided on the key, which has the effect of establishing communication. cation between the passage r and the interior of the key and consequently with the passage s. Thus when the water tap is under pressure, the gas can pass to the pilot burner, but if the water supply is lacking, the diaphragm rod will withdraw under the action of the spring 1, helped if necessary by an additional spring acting on the lever arm 5 or on the diaphragm.
In the form of construction shown, the pilot light x1 is on the opposite side of the valve from the recess t. In some cases, it may be advantageous to have the pilot x1 on the same side as the recess t and in such cases the groove v is omitted and the passage ū leads directly to the burner of the pilot x1. It is not necessary for the thermostat to be heated by the pilot to ignite the main burner or the main burners, as the same result can obviously be obtained with any flame whose gas supply is controlled independently of the flame. 'main burner supply, in conjunction with the water supply.
Where a pilot is provided, however, it is advantageous to use this pilot to control the thermostat, since by this means the need for a separate heating flame for the thermostat is avoided.
The fact that consists in providing the gas tap in such a way that it allows a maximum quantity of gas to be admitted to the burner or to the burners before the water tap is
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
turned to the fully open position and continues to admit the maximum amount of gas until the water tap is turned to the fully open position, is in itself of great interest and must It should be understood that this fact constitutes a special feature of the invention, which can be applied alone or in combination with the device for controlling the gas supply to the pilot in connection with the water supply.
It should also be well understood that the invention is not limited to the details which serve to achieve it and that modifications can be added thereto without escaping from said invention.
