<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
D'autres caractéristiques et particularités de l'invention ressortiront de la description plus détaillée qui suit, de certains de leurs modes préférés de réalisation, donnés à titre d'exemple? et illustres, plus ou moins schématiquement, sur les dessins annexés, qui montrent l'invention appliquée à la fabrication de tuyaux céramiques à emboîtement, et dans lesquels: Fig.l est une vue en élévation d'un appareil à conformer et parachever des tuyaux suivant l'invention;

Fig. 4 une vue en plan, avec arrachements partiels, du mécanisme de parachèvement d'un bout mâle; Figes est une coupe partielle pratiquée sensiblement sui- vant 5-5 de la fig.4;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

The invention relates to the means for shaping and finishing ceramic hollow bodies, and relates in particular to the shaping and finishing of pipes made of pottery, stoneware and the like, in particular those with interlocking.
According to current practice, the plastic blank in cylindrical form, for example supplied by a discharge press or the like, is, after cutting to length, brought, in principle manually, to a machine which flares out and conforms one of its ends. in the form of a female end, after which it is transported, in principle also manually, to an apparatus suitable for forming the conventional grooves in this end; a separate operation forms the grooves to be included at the male end and finally a new transport brings the object to the areas on which it is dried prior to its firing.
These numerous manipulations of a plastic object are
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
not only expensive but, although executed with care, they cause deformation and a relatively very high percentage of rejects.
In addition, there are difficulties in ensuring the objects a perfectly determined and constant length, due to the imprecision of the cutting position on the blank during cutting.
The object of the invention is above all to eliminate the handling of objects in the plastic state and therefore * to eliminate the consequences thereof; it also aims to provide objects of a perfectly constant length.
To this end it consists, in its generality, in providing and combining between them means or mechanisms for supporting the blank, conforming and completing one end of the blank, in particular conforming and completing one end to a female end, cutting the blank to the exactly desired length and complete the other end thereof, in particular at the male end, these shaping, finishing and cutting being carried out without handling the blank.
According to one characteristic of the invention, the means or mechanisms for shaping, finishing and cutting the blank are slaved to occupy relatively fixed positions relative to the blank when they are actuated.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the shaping and finishing of one end, for example of the female end, are carried out on the blank in the supported state, using shaping means or mechanisms and , of completion occupying positions in relation to that of the support.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the shape of a female end is obtained by driving, in one end of the blank, a conformatour mandrel, said mandrel then serving to support said blank.
According to another characteristic of the invention, subsequently or alternatively in a substantially simultaneous manner to conforma **
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tion of a female end, this end is completed, in particular by forming the usual grooves therein, thanks to a comb mechanism or the equivalent, brought at this time into the active position.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the sectioning of the blank is carried out in principle in two different locations, thanks to cutting mechanisms, one of which is fixed with respect to the machine conforming to the blank, while the other is brought to occupy a position in relation to that of the blank, adjusted according to the desired length of the object.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the cutting mechanisms are made to move relative to one another along the length of the blank while they are integral with each other for their passage through the blank.
According to yet another characteristic of the invention, at the same time as the cutting of the blank, - or immediately after, the completion of one end of the blank, for example at the male end, is carried out by means of a mechanism held temporally in a position in relation to that of the blank and comprising finishing means, such as combs or the equivalent, brought into the active position.
The finishing operations are preferably carried out, according to the invention, with the aid of mechanisms capable of yielding, in particular driven by friction.
Other characteristics and particularities of the invention will emerge from the more detailed description which follows, of some of their preferred embodiments, given by way of example. and illustrated, more or less schematically, in the accompanying drawings, which show the invention applied to the manufacture of ceramic pipes with interlocking, and in which: Fig.l is an elevational view of an apparatus for shaping and finishing pipes according to the invention;

Figs 6 and 7 show, on an enlarged scale, respectively in front elevation, and in side elevation, all of the cutting mechanisms.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes an element of any prime mover capable of causing upward and downward movements to a platform 3, preferably guided by two or more uprights. 2.
This machine can be actuated by a fluid, such as for example a steam or hydraulic piston, but also, in a simple way, by counterweights 4 balancing and beyond, the mobile assembly constituted by the plate 3, its rod of support 5 and the other members which it carries and which will be described later, so as to tend to constantly bring this equipment back to its upper position.
Advantageously, a lowering and stopping brake of any type, generally designated by 6, is provided.
The plate 3 is equipped on the one hand with a mandrel 7 (fig. 2) also forming a support device for the pipe in manufacture and on the other hand with a mechanism for finishing and grooving a female end, designated overall by 8.
The mandrel-support 7 can be formed in any suitable manner. It comprises in principle (fig. 2) a head of relatively hard material, wood, bakelite, fiber, etc., 9, and a rim

protruding peripheral, 10, metallic and more or less flexible, which can be lined with a felt 11, the whole cooperating with a shaping member or die 11a belonging to a delivery press or any other preforming machine which has not otherwise represented.
The assembly 7 is placed and centered on a plate 12, engaged by an appendage 13 in a column 14 bearing on the plate 3 by a base 15.
On this column is mounted so as to rotate, for example by having recourse to ball or roller bearings 16, a star member 17 provided on the one hand with two operating arms 18 and on the other hand with two arms. support, preferably diametrically opposed, 19, on one of which is disposed a mounting surface 20 for a vertical shaft end 21.
On the shaft end 21 is threaded, so as to rotate, a sleeve 22 carrying at its upper end a comb, preferably double, 23 and, towards its lower end, a substantially radial finger 24 preferably terminating in a ball joint 25 (fig. 3)
The arm 19 is also provided with a vertical rim 26, on which is disposed a guide 27, the function of which will be indicated below.
On the other hand, on the column 14 is threaded a sleeve 20 split or established in two or more parts, capable of rotating with more or less hard friction on the column, the resistance to rotation being adjusted by tightening the sleeve 28 on the column. its bearing, for example by means of the assembly members 29, which act advantageously by means of springs 30.
The sleeve 28 is also provided with a substantially radial extension 31, facing the rim 26 of the arm 19, and this extension comprises or receives a guide 32 on which, and the guide 27 is retained a spring 33 constantly tending to move apart.

35, in which is engaged, by its ball 25, the radial finger
24.
An adjustable stop 36, provided on the extension 51, cooperates with the sleeve 22, or any other stop to limit the relative movement of this arm with respect to said extension.
Having regard to the foregoing explanation, it will be understood that when one of the arms 18 is actuated in the direction of arrow F (fig. 3) the sleeve 28 first of all remains stationary, while by the cooperation of the finger radial 24 and the stop 34, the sleeve 22 and the comb 23 which it carries are rotated until the sleeve 22 comes into contact with the stop 36. In the example, the rotation of the comb 23 is at this time about 90 relative to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and it will be understood that the teeth 38 of the comb 33 then penetrate into the blank 39 of the pipe being prepared in order to form amor - these grooves 40.
If the rotational movement of the arm 18 is continued, the arm 19, the sleeve 28 and the comb 23 are driven to score corresponding circular grooves in the blank 39.
On the contrary, if the arm 18 were released, the spring 33 which was compressed during the relative movement of the arm 19 and the extension 31 described above, would return these members to their initial position, and the comb 23 in the inaotive position shown in fig. 2.
The sleeve 28 comprises yet another extension 41, also substantially radial, and preferably opposite to the extension 31, on which is mounted a frame, 42 carrying a template 43 suitable for shaping the lower edge of the blank 39.
It goes without saying that, in the device described, one could also provide more than two arms 18 and more than one comb 23

accompanied by its control mechanism, at the same time as several templates 43, the necessary circular displacement of the actuated arm 18 being reduced accordingly.
With particular reference to Fig. 1 and Figures 6, and 7, on a frame 44 surrounding the die 11a and supported in any suitable manner by this die, there is arranged a cutting device, mounted at a fixed level , constituted in principle by a cutting wire 46, stretched transversely or obliquely in a frame 47 movable between rollers 48 journaled on back pivots 49 of the frame 44.
The level of the frame 47 is set in principle so that the cutting wire 48 is approximately flush with the underside of the die 11a and it will be understood that if said frame is moved between the rollers 48 the wire 46 ensures the sectioning, at the level lower die 11a, of a blank delivered by the delivery press with which this die is associated.
Below and parallel to the frame 47, there is another frame 60, equipped with a cutting wire 51 and also movable between rollers 52.
These rollers are journaled on pivots 53, fixed in the plunging branches of a frame 54 also surrounding the die 11a and suspended from links of any kind, for example flexible metal bands 55, passing over pulleys 56 journaled in a frame. fixed 57, said links being fixed by their other ends to balancing counterweights 58.
Vertical bars are still attached to the frame 54.

59 extending parallel to the guides 2 and guided in arms 60 subject to said guides.
On at least one of the plunging bars 69 is fixed in an adjustable manner a movable stop 61, and on the other hand, to the plate 3 is fixed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
a catch 62 adapted to cooperate with the stop 61 to drive down the plunging bars 69 and the frame 54 with the cutter 50-51 when the plate 3 is lowered.
It will be understood that the stopper (s) 61 are adjusted to exactly match the desired length of the pipe to be made and that if the cutter 50-51 is actuated when the stopper (s) 62 is or has come in contact with it. the stop (s) 61, the pipe will be cut at this length *
Furthermore, the two frames of the cutters 47-46 and 60-51 are interconnected by members allowing relative vertical displacement, but making these frames integral for their horizontal displacements.
For this purpose, the frame 47 is equipped with plunging bars 63, sliding through the sleeves 64 secured to the frame 50.
Therefore, the operation of only one of the two frames 47 or 50 will simultaneously perform two cuts in the pipe being made,
A movable mount 64, and for example on the plunging bars 59 of this frame, is also mounted a device suitable for allowing the completion of a male end of ceramic pipe. This device, generally designated by 64 (fig. 1) is supported by consoles 66 terminating in sleeves 66 surrounding the bars 59 and firmly secured to them, at an appropriate level, by any fixing means. , such as the-bolts 67Ú.
Referring to Figures 4 and 5, the device comprises a central opening plate 67 fixed or integral with the consoles 65, said ring comprising an upright annular portion 68.
On the ring 66 is threaded a ring 69 split, or composed of two or more parts, capable of being brought together, for example by means of bolts 70, preferably fitted with springs. 71, so as to rotate with more or less hard friction on the ring 68. From distance to distance, for example in

uniformly distributed locations, the ring 69 is provided with external legs 72 in which are fixed pivots 73, carrying oscillating levers 74 equipped, at their internal end, with combs 7i, only one of which has been shown.
Rear extensions 76 of these levers are pierced with openings 77 between which and fixed points 78 of the ring 69 are stretched by return springs 79.
Said., Tabs 72 also carry projections 80 on which are fixed adjustable stops 81 adapted to cooperate with the levers 74 to limit the inward movement of these levers.
On the support ring 67 is also mounted, so as to easily rotate, a ring 82, carrying radial brackets 83, the engagement of the ring 82 being ensured by rollers 84 and 85 respectively mounted on brackets. pivots 86 and 87.
The pivots 86 are also used to secure inwardly directed tabs 88, on which pivot, at 89, connecting rods 90 articulated at their other end, at 91, at an intermediate location of the comb holder levers 74.
The ring 92 is also provided with one or more handles 92, so as to be able to drive it in rotation around the support ring 67-68. It will be appreciated that when the ring 82 is driven in this way in the direction of arrow F2, the ring 69 and the pivots 73 of the comb-holder levers 74 first remain stationary, while the connecting rods 90 oscillate the levers 74 towards the inside of the support ring 67-88, until the contact of these levers with the adjusted stops 81, bringing the teeth 93 of the combs 75 into the active position, after which the rotation of the ring 82 being continued, the ring 69 is also rotated and the teeth 93 describe circumferences of reduced radius concentric with the support ring 67-68.
If at any time we stop acting on the handle 92, the ring 69 is immobilized and the comb holder levers 74,

With an apparatus-as described above, the conformation,

Once the operations have been completed, the operator releases the handle of the arm 18, which brings the combs back to the Inactive position while the mobile equipment - plate 3 and associated organs executes and continues a downward movement under the influence of the weight, and where appropriate the thrust of the blank delivered by the press

delivery or other machine'eonformatriee, until the time or the cleats 62 reach the corresponding stops 61.
At this time, the machine is stopped, for example by acting on the brake 6, but the said mobile unit, because of its acquired force, still continues its downward movement on a
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
small distance, of the order of a few centimeters, by causing the stops 62 to the stops 61.
These stops in turn drive the associated bars 59 and on the one hand the mobile cutter 50-51, on the other hand the grooving mechanism 64.
The movable cutter 50-51 in this way moves away from the stationary cutter 47-46, but remaining at a fixed distance from the lower end of the blank.
One of the cutters then being actuated, the blank is cut at two locations a few centimeters apart, one corresponding substantially to the level of the lower face of the die 11a, the other corresponding to the desired length of the pipe. The cut ring corresponding to the gap between the two cutters nevertheless remains attached to the formed pipe; it accompanies this pipe in the subsequent seohago and cooking or drying operations only, serving as protection against shocks and deformations for its upper edge.
This ring is moreover easily detached after drying or baking.
Simultaneously with cutting, or immediately after, the operator actuates the grooving mechanism 64, by acting on one of the handles 92 to impart to it a circular movement according to the arrow F2, During the first phase of this movement, the teeth 93 of the combs 75 are brought into the active position, that is to say to penetrate into the external face of the upper end of the blank, after which, the circular movement continuing, these teeth form in this end a series of circular grooves.
As soon as this operation is completed, the finished pipe is removed from the apparatus, which is then ready for the execution of a new cycle of operations.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
If necessary, to facilitate the removal of the finished pipe, the mobile assembly - plate 3 and associated components - can be quickly lowered somewhat, in order to release the formed pipe properly, this release being preceded by a deletion of the tabs 62 or of the stops 61, which in this case will be organized accordingly.
Although the making of a fitting pipe has been described more specifically, it is obvious that the apparatus also lent itself well to the making of pipes without fitting, the mandrel 7 alone then being replaced by an appropriate support, while the mechanism for forming the internal grooves is not operated and the mechanism for forming the external grooves can optionally be operated twice.
It also goes without saying that the various mechanisms described are only examples, and that one could make modifications or substitute equivalents therewith without departing from the limits of the invention * In particular, the grooving and the cutting devices could be actuated automatically by appropriate motor controls, for example under the control of a timer or a level indicator; where appropriate, they could be arranged to form grooves or helical beads.
