Conformément à l'invention, parmi les opérations ou phases de travail suivantes, les plus essentielles au moins ont lieu successivement sous un contrôle individuel et mutuel de temps, savoir : a) Fermeture des parties de moule ; b) Introduction sous pression d'une suspension de fi- bres dans le moule, le liquide s'échappant à travers les parois de moule tout en abandonnant une couche défibres sur la faoe interne desdites parois;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
La figure 1 est une vue en élévation de la machine dont certaines parties sont vues en coupe;
La figure 2 est une coupe verticale à plus grande échelle du moule et des dispositifs d'amenée pour les dif- férents agents de travail ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
cylindre 72.
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

"Method and device for the manufacture of molded bodies".
The present invention relates to a method and a machine for the manufacture of moldings from a fibrous material suspended in a liquid (generally water) with or without adducts, in formed molds. parts movable relative to each other, molds oomportant walls permeable to gases and liquids, Such molded bodies are, for example, packaging of various types such as bottles, cups, oaisses and the like.
According to the invention, among the following operations or work phases, at least the most essential take place successively under individual and mutual time control, namely: a) closing of the mold parts; b) Introduction under pressure of a suspension of fibers into the mold, the liquid escaping through the walls of the mold while leaving a layer of fibers on the internal faoe of said walls;
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
o) Introduction under pressure of a liquid free of fibers into the mold, this liquid repelling the suspension of fibers which remains and determining compression of the layer of fibers; d) Introducing a hot gaseous agent under pressure into the mold for drying the molded object; e) opening of the mold parts; f) Finally, removing the molded body from the mold.
Due to the fact that the process defined above is carried out, at least partially, but preferably completely, in an automatic manner, compared to the processes used to date, a more high manufacturing reliability, a smaller breakage coefficient and a saving of time and, in particular, a saving of motive power. In addition, the moldings obtained require less subsequent labor and even no subsequent labor, all of these conditions contributing to making operation more economical than has hitherto been the case. By using as the gas pressure medium preferably water vapor and then hot air, the drying time of the molded body can be reduced.
The fiber suspension is advantageously introduced under a pressure greater than a water column of one meter, for example under a pressure corresponding to a column of water of two to four meters, or even at a pressure greater than one meter. high. The upper limit of this pressure is determined by the concentration of the fiber slurry, the dimensions of the mold, the desired wall thickness of the final product and other factors. The fiber-free liquid (usually water) is advantageously introduced under a pressure greater than that of the fiber slurry, for example under a pressure greater than one atmosphere, preferably at a pressure of less than one atmosphere.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
taken between two and five atmospheres or even at a higher pressure.
Also in this case the upper limit depends essentially on the same factors on which the pressure of the fiber suspension depends.
Instead of allowing the gaseous agent under pressure to expel the liquid which remains in the mold, this liquid can be withdrawn before the above-mentioned agent is introduced into the mold. In this case, an additional operation or working phase is interposed between the phases c and d specified above, this operation being advantageously also carried out automatically, namely under time control. This operation can be foreseen in the case of large packages, while expulsion with the aid of the gaseous agent under pressure is advantageously carried out in small packages.
A machine operating in accordance with the principles set out above for the implementation of the process has positively controlled organs under individual and mutual control of time, organs intended to control at least the most essential operations and, preferably. , all these operations, The organs are subjected to the action of a pressurized agent of any kind, for example compressed air, but it is clear that a vacuum can also be used for this purpose. The admission of the various working agents is controlled by valves which can be controlled by pistons subjected to the action of compressed air, which pistons, in turn, can be controlled, under individual time control. and mutual, using positively controlled valves.
These valves can, for example, be controlled by cams carried by a camshaft, said shaft being able to rotate in a continuous manner or being able to advantageously be actuated in an intermittent manner in that it can be brought in. in and out of socket with rotating shaft

continuously and oeoi thanks to a mobile device for transmitting movement. This movement transmission device is advantageously controlled by a piston subjected to the action of compressed air, this piston being connected to a source of compressed air and separated from the latter by means of one or more valves. Similarly, the opening and closing of the mold are advantageously brought about by means of one or more pneumatic pistons of the type specified above.
In what follows, the invention will be described with reference to an embodiment shown by way of example in the appended drawing, other characteristics of the invention appearing in the course of this description.
In what follows it will be assumed that the machine operates with compressed air.
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the machine, certain parts of which are seen in section;
FIG. 2 is a vertical section on a larger scale of the mold and of the feed devices for the various working agents;
Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 show a number of different valves together.
In Figure 1 there is denoted by 10 a continuously rotating motor shaft, shaft on which is mounted a toothed wheel 12 and on which can pivot an elbow oscillating lever 14 at the end of one of the arm of which there is a pinion 16 in engagement with the toothed wheel 12, while the other arm of the elbow lever 14 is articulated with the piston rod 18 of a piston 22 able to move in a cylinder 20. The cylinder has intake ports 24 and 26 on both sides of piston 22.
The movement of the piston in one direction or the other determines the coming into engagement or out of engagement of the pinion 16 with a toothed wheel 28 set on a camshaft 30, said shaft

bearing a number of cams 32 each controlling a valve 34 which, as can be seen in FIG. 3, can be organized in the form of a ball valve comprising an inlet 36 and an outlet 38 for com. - award-winning. The position and the peripheral eccentricity of the cam projection 40 of the different cams obviously determine the times when the valve is open and closed and therefore the time during which the valve in question is open.
As seen in Figure 2, the mold is formed of two side parts 42, 42 provided with orifices, an upper part 44 and a lower part (or bottom) 46 also provided with orifices. The side parts 42 are fixed on a mold holder 48 formed of two halves and also provided with perforated walls. The mold holder and the mold are enclosed in a cap 50 in which are controlled rods 52 which are fixed to the mold holder and which perform a reciprocating movement, these rods being subjected, by means of rods transverse 53, to the aotion of eccentrics 54 which, for their part, relive their movement by means of cranks 56 connected to a coupling rod 55 (see figure 1) and from a piston 60 which performs a back and forth movement in a cylinder 58.
The cylinder 58 comprises, on either side of the piston 60, intake ports 62 and 64 for compressed air,
The cap 50 has a lower opening which is closed by a base 66 when the mold is in the closed position, the aforementioned base being secured to the base 46 by means of a locking disc 68 interposed between the two bases. The ends 46 and 66, as well as the locking disc 68, slide on guides 70 and are connected to a piston rod 71 of a piston 74 performing a vertical reciprocating movement in a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cylinder 72. The cylinder 72 comprises, on either side of the piston 74, intake ports 76 and 78 for the compressed air.
When the mold is in the closed position, the locking disc 00 68 engages with a peripheral groove 80 formed in the wall of the mold holder 48, the bottom 46 resting against the lower end of the mold, while that the bottom 66 rests against the lower face of the cap 50. The various agents are introduced into the mold through an orifice made in the upper part 44 which communicates with an inlet chamber 80 into which emerge the pipes provided for the suspension of fibers, pressurized water, steam and hot air.
These pipes are designated in FIG. 2 in the above order by 82, 84, 86 and 88 and these pipes are controlled by valves 83, 85, 87 and 89, respectively. As can be seen in Figure 1, in which there is shown in section a control device for the hot air valve 89, device offset by 90 with respect to the control device (made from same way) for the other valves, the valve stem 90 is connected, via a caliper 92, to a piston 96 capable of performing a reciprocating motion in a cylinder 94 and subjected to the action of a spring 95 .
The cylinder has an intake port 98 for compressed air. The machine is provided with several auxiliary valves; res shown schematically in Figure 1 and in detail in Figures 4, 5 and 6.
Such an auxiliary valve (see figure 1) is intended to be actuated during the opening and closing of the mold halves 42 and it consists of a piston 106 movable in a cylinder 100 provided with a cylinder. intake 102 and an exhaust 104 for compressed air, the aforementioned piston being arranged to be moved into the open and closed position under the action of stops 108 and

110 provided on the coupling rod 55 of the cranks 56 when the aforementioned rod moves to move the piston 60 in the position of opening and closing the mold halves.
Another auxiliary valve (see figure 4) is formed by two ball valves 114 and 116 adapted to be actuated by a common piston or spool 118, these valves having inlet ports 120, 122 and 124, 126, respectively, for compressed air. The spool 118 is in turn controlled by two piston valves 128 and 130.
The piston 132 of the left valve 128 is arranged to be actuated by compressed air coming from the port and 129 from the same line supplying the compressed air to the port 98 for the control of the valve d. hot air 89; the piston 134 of the right-hand valve 130 is arranged to be actuated, via an auxiliary valve 136 which will be described below in detail, by compressed air entering through the orifice 137. When compressed air is admitted, the piston 134 is moved, despite the action of a spring 138, into a position in which the inlet and outlet ports 140 and 142 for the compressed air are interconnected .
The auxiliary valve 136 to which reference has been made above (see in particular FIG. 5) comprises two pairs of exhaust ports 144, 146 and 148.50 for compressed air, orifices which are open or closed simultaneously. - mentally under the aotion of a piston 152 maintained, by means of a spring 154 (see FIG. 1), in a position causing the orifices to close, this piston being organized to be actuated, when the mold base 46-66 se.trouve at the bottom inversion point, thanks to a stop 156 connected to the aforementioned base.
Finally, a safety valve 160 (see figure 6) has been provided with intake and exhaust ports.

162 and 164 for compressed air. The valve body 166 is normally closed by the action of compressed air and is arranged to be brought into the open position by means of a lever 168 actuated at the end of the upstroke of the bottom. 46-66 thanks to a stop of the latter, for example the stop 156.
The compressed air source is connected directly: to the two inlet ports 144 and 148 via a pipe 170; to the inlet 162 of the auxiliary valve 160 through a line 172; finally to the inlet 140 of the valve 130 via a pipe 163. Finally, all the cam-controlled valves 34 are connected directly to the source of compressed air.
Such a valve 34, controlled by a cam 32 wedged on the shaft 30, controls the arrival of compressed air, on the one hand in the direction of the inlet orifice 102 of the auxiliary valve 100 via of a pipe 174 and, on the other hand, in the direction of the inlet port 62 of the cylinder 58 via a channel 176. Another valve 34, controlled by means of a similar cam 32 wedged on the camshaft 30, controls the arrival of compressed air in the direction of the other inlet port 64 of cylinder 58 via a pipe 178. Other valves 34, controlled in a similar manner by oame, control the valves 83, 85, 87 and 89 for the various working agents.
Inlet ports 120 and 124 of valves 114 and 116 communicate, via line 180, with exhaust port 104 of auxiliary valve 100. Exhaust port 122 of auxiliary valve 100. valve 144 communicates, through line 182, with upper intake port 78 of cylinder 72 and, through line 184, with lower intake port 26 of cylinder 20 .The exhaust port
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
element 126 of valve 116 communicates, via an oanalisation 188, with the lower inlet port 76 of cylinder 72. The inlet port 129 of cylinder 128 communicates, via a line 190, with the same compressed air line through which the hot air valve 89 is supplied.
The exhaust port 142 of the piston valve 130 communicates with a pipe 194 opening out to the side and slightly above the bottom 46 when the latter occupies its lower position and serves for expulsion, by blowing. , of the molded body. The exhaust port 146 of the auxiliary valve 136 communicates, via a pipe 196, with an orifice 197 formed in the bottom 46-66 (see FIG. 2) for the purpose of detachment, for example. blowing of the molded body, while the other exhaust port 150 of said valve communicates, via a pipe 198, with the inlet port 137 of the piston valve 130.
The intake port 164 of the overlock valve 160 communicates, via an oanalisation 200, with the upper intake port 24 of the cylinder 20.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
It will be assumed that the mold is intended for the manufacture of a package having a capacity of half a liter, which package, in the dry state, weighs 45 g, the fiber suspension having a concentration of 1.5%. . The packaging therefore requires three liters of fiber suspension.
In FIG. 1, the intermediate gear 16 is shown in the disengaged position, ie the camshaft 30 is stationary. In this position, the mold halves 42 are in the open position, while the bottom 46-66 occupies its lower position, the valves 100, 130 and 136 being open, while, among the valves of the double valve 112, the left one (114) is closed and the one
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
right (116) is open. Compressed air therefore passes through valve 100, line 180, right valve 116, and line 188 to reach the space below piston 174, whereby bottom 46-66 is moved to the bottom. high. Simultaneously the 136 ee valve closes.
At the end of the upward movement of the bottom 46-66, the stop 156 strikes the lever 168, which causes the opening of the valve 160. The compressed air thus arrives, via the pipe. 200, above the piston 22, which determines the engagement of the intermediate pinion 16 with the toothed wheel 28 set on the camshaft + 30 which is thus set in motion. The valve 160 constitutes a safety device in the sense that the camshaft is only put into action when the bottom completes, without being hampered, its upward movement.
If this were not the case, for example if the molded object had not been removed and had remained standing on the bottom, the latter could not perform the last remaining part of the upward movement, which part is necessary. (generally 1 to 2 mm) for the control of the valve 160, which causes the machine to be brought to a standstill.
When the camshaft turns, first the cam-controlled valve 34 opens, this valve regulating the arrival of the compressed air, via the pipe 178, in the cylinder 58, whereby the piston 60 is moved, which results in the guiding of the mold halves 42 and the mold holder halves 48 towards each other via the eccentrics 54 and the contact tightness of said halves with the bottom 46-66 and the upper part 44. During this movement, the valve 100 is also closed by the stopper 110. The aforementioned pressure on the piston 60 is maintained throughout the period of casting, which means that the mold is necessarily kept in the closed position for
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
This time.
The continuation of the rotational movement of the camshaft 30 determines the control, in the order indicated below, of the valves 34 controlled by the cams fixed on the aforementioned shaft for the purpose of adjusting the arrival of the camshaft. the compressed air on the pistons of the valves 83, 85, 87 and 89 provided respectively for the suspension of fibers, pressurized water, pressurized steam and hot compressed air.
It is first of all the valve 83, intended for the suspension of fibers, which opens, whereby the suspension of fibers having the concentration indicated above is brought into the mold by means of 'a line 82 from a reservoir located at a higher level or with the aid of a pump, the valve in question being kept open by the cam for a period sufficient for the expulsion of two liters and half of water through the perforated walls of the mold and depositing a sufficiently thick layer of fibers on the inner wall of the mold. For a pressure corresponding to a water column of 4 to 5 meters, approximately three seconds are sufficient for this purpose.
After this first molding period, the mold is filled with the fiber suspension. Immediately after the end of this period, the valve 83 of the line 82 is closed and the valve 85 of the pressurized water line 84 is opened, this water possibly being hot. This pressurized water pushes the residual fibrous mass back into the mold (which causes the fibers that have not followed to settle on the internal face of the layer of fibers) and helps to perfect the pressing of the layer which becomes hard and dense and which receives a uniform and smooth surface. For a water pressure of approximately two atmospheres, approximately four seconds are necessary for this second period of work. At the end of this period the mold is filled with water.
The valve 85 controlling the pressurized water line is then closed and the valve 87 for the steam under a pressure of about four.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
atmospheres at a temperature of about 2000 is opened, this vapor being fed, through line 86, into the mold to drive off water therein and to determine pre-drying of the molded body. The pressure steam valve 87 is then closed and the hot air valve 89 at a pressure of about four atmospheres and at a temperature of 3000 is opened, this air entering under pressure, through the line 88 in the mold to determine the final drying of the molded object.
With the temperatures and pressures listed above for steam and hot air, times of between twenty and thirty seconds or so are required.
During the last part of the movement of the camshaft, the valve 34, controlled by cam and controlling the admission of compressed air on the right side of the piston 60 via the line 178, is closed, while the valve 34, controlled by cam and controlling the admission of compressed air on the left side of the aforementioned piston 60 via the pipe 176, is open, which causes this piston to stop. finds displaced and opens the mold halves 42 as well as the mold carrier halves 48 via the cranks 56 and the eccentrics 54. At the same time the valve 100 is opened by the action of the stop 108.
Before the mold is opened, compressed air enters, through line 198, into piston valve 128, causing piston 118 of double valve 112 to be moved into a vacuum. direction such that the left valve 114 is open and the right valve 116 is closed. It follows that the communication between the source of compressed air, on the one hand, and the intake port 178 located above the piston 74 (via the valve 100, of the pipe 180, the left valve 114 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
the oanalisation 182), on the other hand, is open, the piston 74 moving downwards under the action of the compressed air.
The molded object remains upright on the bottom. At the end of this movement, the valve 136 is opened by the stop 156, which causes the compressed air to escape on the one hand, through the pipe 196, through the orifice 197 formed in the bottom (thus causing the expulsion, by blowing, of the molded object from the aforementioned bottom), and on the other hand, via the pipe 198, towards the orifice of intake 137 of the valve 130. The piston 134 is moved therein, in the aforementioned valve, in a direction such that the Line 163, which communicates with the source of compressed air, is connected to the line 194, this which causes compressed air to be blown against the molded object which stands freely upright, which object is thus removed from the machine.
The movement of the piston 134 also causes the movement of the piston 118 in the double valve 112 in a direction such that the left valve 114 is closed and the right valve 116 is opened, which causes the flow of compressed air under. the piston 74 via the valve 100, the line 180, the right valve 116, the line 188 and the inlet port 76, the piston 74 then guiding the bottom upwards, while that the valve 136 is simultaneously closed. The cycle of operations then begins again.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing; this embodiment can undergo modifications from various points of view without departing from the scope of the invention. In the machine shown the control of the various positively actuated parts takes place partly mechanically and partly pneumatically by means of compressed air, but it is obvious that this can also take place in another way, for example by purely mechanical, purely pneumatic, hydraulic or electric means or by a combination @
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
appropriate any of these means.
Although the compressed air pistons for causing the camshaft to be switched on and off, the upward and downward movement of the bottom and the opening and closing movement of the mold halves are organized. , according to the drawing, to be actuated pneumatically by means of compressed air in both directions, it is obvious that these pistons can, in the same way as the pneumatic pistons for the control of the intake valves, be arranged for be actuated in one direction by compressed air and in the other direction by a spring or by the action of any other force.
It should be noted that when the present specification relates to pistons operating under the action of compressed air, this expression should also be understood to include devices giving the same result, for example devices mechanical, relays, etc ...
