; "DIIACHIl\T.L LT PROCEDA Db FABRICATION DLS F.LIRIjlOIRS"
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

; "DIIACHIl \ T.L LT PROCEDA Db FABRICATION DLS F.LIRIjlOIRS"
The invention relates to clasps actuated by a slide, and in particular those of the type in which the elements of the clasp of at least one of the series, located one opposite the other, are formed by successive turns of a wire wound in an open spiral and applies more particularly to an improved machine and to a process used to assemble this coil with a ribbon of textile material and to join it together with it.
In a usual way, we start by cutting the coil wound wire into lengths each suitable for the manufacture of a clasp, then we bring each of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
these lengths to the ribbon, by first placing the coil end to end next to the ribbon, by piercing the ribbon through the whole with the wire then by rotating the serpentine around its axis, it is screwed into the ribbon and each turn of the coil brings its end into contact with the ribbon which it pierces at a point located in front of the previous piercing point at a distance corresponding to the pitch of the coil.
Although this method of operation is perfectly suited to the practice of making clasps of moderate lengths and using undeformed cylindrical coils, and can be applied quickly by skilled workers, it is not so easy to use, when 'it is a question of making clasps of great length, or when using a deformed coil so as to obtain clasp elements in the form of hooks. On the other hand very long clasps are now commonly demanded in commerce and there would be a considerable advantage in manufacturing the complete band-clasp, comprising the ribbon and coil assembled, in considerable lengths, at the expense of stock product,
so that one can short or long eyelash clasps simply by cutting appropriate lengths from this stock item. In addition, it is customary to use a deformed coil to form at least one of the series of elements of the clasp.
The main object of the invention is an improved method of assembling and bonding a helically wound yarn and a textile tape to form an iron.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
slide moiré; process consists in preparing first a ribbon comprising a ladder-shaped portion devoid of longitudinal threads and adjacent to one of the edges of the strip, although at a certain distance inside this edge, in taking a wire wound in a spiral open, to bring the ribbon and the end coil along converging paths, so that the coil comes into contact with the ladder-shaped portion of the ribbon, to push the coil transversely towards the ribbon,
so that its turns enter between the threads of the string-shaped portion of the tape to fold the edge of the tape onto the body of the lesson tape that the threads forming the ladder-shaped portion of the tape wrap around around the turns of the coil, and to permanently join the edge of the ribbon to the body of the ribbon. It is further contemplated by the invention to support the ladder-shaped portion of the tape only by its edges while the coil is penetrated therein.
A further subject of the invention is a new device which is advantageous for implementing the new method and which comprises a device supporting the e-shaped portion. scale of the ribbon simply by its edges and pushing and causing the coil to penetrate into said portion, a device folding the edge of the ribbon over the body of the ribbon and a device permanently joining the edge of the ribbon to the body of the ribbon. The apparatus further comprises a device for passing the tape and the coil through successive zones in which they are brought into contact and pressed against each other, the selvedge being folded back and joined to the body of the tape.

The appended drawing shows by way of example an advantageous mechanism suitable for carrying out the operation described above. On this drawing:
Figure 1 is a schematic partial side elevation with partial vertical section of the apparatus according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a schematic partial plan view, some parts of which have been omitted.
Figure 3 is a larger scale neck, taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are partial vertical sections on a larger scale, taken respectively along lines 4-4 and 5-5 in figure 2.
Figure 6 is a cross section, approximately to the same scale as Figure 5 of the finished clasp band.
Fig. 7 is a schematic partial plan view of a piece of tape suitable for practicing the improved method; and Figure 8 is a schematic partial front elevation of a clasp having a band made by the method of the invention.
If we refer to the drawing, we see that the number 1 designates the frame of the machine, which supports a pair of substantially norizontal elements 2 and ± forming a table. The table element .2. forms a portion of a couare machine mechanism comprising a presser foot bar 4 and a needle bar 5, which supports a needle. couare 6.
The presser foot bar 4 carries the presser foot 7, and the table is pierced under this presser foot with a suitable opening serving as the housing; of the ordinary feed dog 8. It should be understood that the needle bar, presser foot bar and feed dog, as well as the parts
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cooperating with the needle 6 to form the stitching points (not visible here) are actuated in appropriate synchronism by mechanisms, such as are commonly employed in sewing machines of the known type.
The table 1 has an elongated, shallow groove or groove 2, the width of which is approximately equal to that of the finished strip. In the vicinity of one of the edges of this groove or groove 9, there is a deeper portion 10, preferably of curved outline intended to house the coil. On a portion of its length the groove or groove .9 is covered with a cover plate 11 held at the bottom by means of spring lugs 12 and 13.
Preferably, these spring lugs are arranged so as to be able to be swung out of the cover plate, to allow this plate to be easily removed, over a portion of its length, the cover plate is cut along one of the sides. its edges to allow a presser finger 14 to pass through, arranged so as to be located above the deeper portion 10 of the groove or groove, pivoting at 15 on an arm carried by the table 2 and pushed down by a spring 16. This finger 14 is intended to be located above the coil very close in front of the presser foot 7, so as to make the coil take a suitable position as it advances under the presser foot.
To accommodate the coil during the sewing operation, the presser foot has a groove 7a (fig.l) and to guide the coil to the point where the coil is assembled with the tape, table 2 has a groove or longitudinal groove 2a (fig. 2).
To the left of the table, the machine frame has
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
an arm 17 which supports a folding mechanism 18. This folding mechanism is preferably of the ordinary roller type: used as an accessory on sewing machines for folding a hem and preferably comprises a supporting element 19 joined together in an adjustable manner to the arm 17 by means of a bolt 20.
To the left of the arm 17, the frame of the machine comprises a pair of horizontal shaft ends 21 and 22, respectively, the axes of which are in the same vertical plane.
The end of the shaft 22 carries a guide roller for the tape which can turn freely and comprising a portion 23 to be on.:. '8.CE: cylindrical at the edge, intended to support the portion of the body of the tape T and a portion 24 of diameter. a little larger than the portion 23 and joined to this portion by a stud 25. The portion 24 has a width corresponding approximately to that of the ladder-shaped portion of the tape, as it has been above , and comprises a peripheral groove 26, the depth of which is preferably substantially greater than the radius of the coil and the walls of which are limited by portions in the form of thin flanges 27 and 28, which are each provided with teeth on their periphery.
On the end of the shaft 21 is mounted a guide roller for the coil 29, preferably of conical shape and the thickness of the peripheral bora of which is less than the width of the groove 26, this edge comprising a peripheral groove 30, of which the curved contour corresponding approximately to the curvature of the coil C, intended to be assembled with the tape, '! lais, the depth of which is preferably slightly less than the radius of the coil. The outer face of the roller 29 has a clamping flange of the ru -
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
ban 31 arranged so as to overhang the outer surface of the flange 28 furnished with teeth of the element 24 of the lower roller, and located at a distance from said outer face approximately equal to the thickness of the tape.
An arm directed to the left from the main frame 1, as seen in FIG. 1, supports a tape guide plate 32. With this plate is combined a tensioning element 33, applied against the plate by a adjustable spring 34. The tape T passes between the elements 32 and 33, then under a roller 35, by which it is guided to come into contact with the elements of, Rollers 23 and 24 and so that the ladder-shaped portion of the tape sits just above the groove 26 with its edges hooked onto the teeth of the respective edges of the flanges 27 and 28 and that the edge of the tape covers the outer surface of the roller member 24, so as to be grasped and clamped against this surface by the clamp 31.
The tape used for this purpose is of the general type shown in FIG. 7. This tape T can be a woven or braided tape of a suitable textile material and comprises the selvages 36 and 37. The portion of the tape designated by 38, which one can call body of the tape has a tight structure and comprises elements of longitudinal and transverse threads and the margina portion: The 39 contiguous to the selvedge 37 also has longitudinal and transverse elements.But the ladder-shaped portion denoted by 40 and contiguous to the marginal portion 40 is devoid of longitudinal elements and contains only transverse threads, which therefore can separate freely.
To operate the mechanism, we place the coil C in the groove 2a, of the table 2 and we introduce
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the tape between the elements 32 and 33, then the coil and the tape are pulled forward between the upper and lower roller elements and into the folding mechanism 18, which they pass through, then circulate., through 1 & groove 9 and under the presser foot 7 of the sewing machine mechanism. The sheet 11 is then put in place and the sewing machine is started.
The sewing machine advance mechanism advances the tape and coil to the right of Figure 1. The ladder-shaped portion 40 of the tape which covers the groove 26 receives the coil C, which is guided by 'a. suitably through the groove of the upper roller 29, and this upper roller suitably spaced with respect to the lower roller 24, not only guides the coil by passing it over the portion 40 of the tape, but also causes the coil to penetrate into the tape material so that its turns pass between the parallel son elements 41 of the tape.
As the coil and tape continue to advance, the marginal portion 39 of the tape leaves the roller element 24, as well as the clamping element 31 (which directly holds this marginal portion, while the coil is pushed transversely into the ribbon) then passes through the folding mechanism 18, where the marginal portion 39 (as well as the portion 40 of the ribbon) folds up, until it is above the body 38 of the ribbon (fig. 4).
The various portions being in this position penetrate under the cover plate 11 applied by its springs and which maintains them in their suitable relative positions as they advance towards the mechanism of the sewing machine. The conti-
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
to advance, the presser finger 14 pushes the coil downwards so as to pass it exactly in the groove 7a of the presser foot, and while the coil and the tape advance under the presser foot, the needle 6, with the pieces combined with them, form stitching points which permanently join the marginal portion 39 of the tape to the body of the tape 38.
During the folding operation, the wire elements 41 of the tape surround the turns of the coil which is thus fixed in a permanent but flexible manner in the tape over its entire length.
The result obtained by the operation described above consists in the formation of a tape strip, as shown in Figure 6, in which the portions of the body and the edge of the tape are joined by points forming a seam S , while coil C runs along one edge of the finished tape and is securely attached to tape T.
This band, resulting from the combination of a ribbon and a coil can be used to form a closure device, as shown in figure 8. This figure represents two tapes T and T1, with their respective coils C and C1 combined with them, assembled and fitted with a slider K so as to form a clasp, in which it should be noted that one of the coils is a cylindrical coil, while the other is a deformed coil, and that these two types of coils, can be assembled with their tapes with the same ease by using the machine described above.
Although an advantageous form of mechanism has been described above by way of example, it should of course be understood.

that the invention is not necessarily limited to the precise dEs indicated above, but must be regarded as including, within the limits of its scope, all the variants and equivalents likely to be reasonably retained therein.
