<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Reclining seat and back rest units.
Chairs are known which can be transformed into a chaise-longue, the seat of which is attached in a reclining manner by its front side to the frame of the furniture and is articulated on the backrest. To allow the seat and the backrest of these pieces of furniture to pass from the seated position II to the "lying" position, the backrest received additional support in a notched guide, formed for example by a continuation in height of the posterior supports of the chair frame. By accommodating the backrest in other notches, it was thus possible, when one wanted to modify the position of the furniture, to incline the backrest at an angle corresponding to the inclination of the seat. To make such a move, it was necessary to get up from the chair, since it was necessary to lift the seat and the backrest to take them out of one notch and slide them into another.
In addition, the number of possible positions was limited by the number of notches.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The aim of the present invention is to improve such furniture for rest in their construction and their mode of use.
To this end, the invention consists in that the fulcrum of the backrest is guided by a continuous guide in an arc of a circle and, against the action of a spring or a counterweight. Thus, a piece of furniture is created that the seated person, without having to get up, can use continuously from sitting to lying down. It is very simple to determine the dimensions of the different organs in this way, so that the displacement ratio of the seat and the backrest responds, in the different positions, to an anatomical optimum of the person at rest. The circular arc-controlled guiding of the backrest can be achieved in several ways, for example, by the backrest fulcrum being guided by a tilting guide fixed to the furniture frame or by a support constructed in such a way. appropriate in the shape of a circular arc.
These characteristics of the invention, as well as the others, will appear better from the description given below of the embodiments shown in the drawings.
The fig.l shows an embodiment of the chair according to the invention, in side view; fig. 2 is another embodiment, also seen from the side; fig. 3 is the illustration of the embodiment of fig.1; Fig.4 is the illustration of the embodiment of Fig.2; fig. 5 shows the spring return device of the embodiment of FIG. 1, in section; fig. 6 is a construction detail of the embodiment of FIG. 2, in section.
The chair according to fig. 1 and 3 comprises the chassis frames 1 resting on the ground, as well as the guide arm 2 articulated on them, suitably constructed as a coupling.

doir and pivoting by the articulation pin 4 on the backrest supports 10 and 10a. On these are articulated by the journals 9 the longitudinal edges of the seat 8, which, on the front, are articulated by the journals 7, 7a on the box 6. The boxes 6, 6a are fixed on the chassis frame 1. The guide arm 2, 2a determines the position of the backrest, because it describes the arc of a circle 40, forcing the backrest to follow this arc.
The inclination of the backrest is in turn determined by the seat edge 8, which also describes an arc of a circle around the journal 7 and the lower end of the backrest is forced to follow this arc. The degree of inclination, of the seat and of the backrest is therefore determined, on the one hand, by the distance of the two pivot centers, that is to say of the journal 7 and the journal 3 between them, and on the other hand part, by the length of the two arcs of a circle, that is to say the length of the seat and the length of the guide arm. The position indicated by the dotted line. in fig.l indicates the extreme lying position.
An armrest 5 is fixed on the guide arm 2. The necessary lengthening of the backrest in the lying position is provided by the two U-shaped guide strips 11, 11a, which slide on the two backrest supports 10, 10a , which are L-sections and pivot at their upper end by means of articulations on the edges of the headrest 12, 12a. On the edges 12., 12a are fixed the two bands 15, 15a, on which is sewn la.pièce of canvas 14 serving as a headrest. The joints of the edges of the headrest 12, 12a are provided with. handwheels 13, 13a which, on the one hand, make it possible to tighten the joints, on the other hand, to simultaneously tighten the guide strips 11, lla on the back supports, which makes it possible to fix the headrest in any position.
In the seated position, the headrest 14 rests flat on the backrest padding 39.
The footrest is also made up of L-profiles 16, in which the padding 38 is fixed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tion and mounting of the footrest are clearly shown in fig. 5. On the longitudinal edges of the seat 8 is fixed, at the bottom, the easel 33, in which pivots the journal 34 joined rigidly, on the one hand, to the edge of the footrest 16, and on the other hand, to the steering wheel. control 35. The lever 36 is mounted on the one hand on the control wheel 35, on the other hand on the guide arm 2. As the guide arm 2 is movable around the articulation pin 3, it entrai.ne in this movement the lever and the control wheel 35 and the latter, through the journal 34, drives the edge of the footrest 16.
The path of the lever 36 is further amplified by the fact that, because of the rotational movement of the seat around the journal 7, the journal 34 moves away to the left of the guide arm 2. In the seated position, the support -feet is folded back, under and against the seat frame 8.
The return from the lying position to the sitting position is effected by means of the elastic blades 17, which, inside the guide arm 2 formed of a tube, are housed in a suitable sliding body 21 and are themselves movable . This sliding is carried out by means of a stop wheel 23, screwed into the sliding body 21 and which presses the curved part 22 on the guide arm 2. So that the sliding body 21 can move freely, the pins 3 are attached to the outer surface of both sides of the guide arm 2. The elastic blades 17 enter deep into the tube of the chassis frame 1 and the extreme elastic blade carries the stopper 18.
So that the elastic blades can move freely, the tube of the chassis frame 1, on both sides, and the. guide arms 2, on one side, are partially split. On the tube of the chassis frame 1 is fixed the box 6 formed of sheet metal bent in a U, so as to cover the slot of the pipe 1. The open part at the top of the box 6 is covered by a closing plate 30, fixed removably. by means of screws 32; inside the box are fixed, on both sides, the guide strips 20, between which slides
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the wheel 19, on which the elastic blades 17 are based.
When the seat receives a load, the guide arm 2 is lowered to the right around the journal ¯ 3 and the elastic blades press on the roller 19. If the arrow is too strong, the elastic blades 17 are returned by the handwheel stop 23, which decreases the active length of the guide arm 2. Finally, the stop 18 meets the roller 19 and drives the latter to. that it comes to be lodged in the elbow of the band 20. In this position, the deflection is at the maximum, about ten times the smallest bending path. One can straighten up from the supine position by leaning forward and lifting somewhat, the elastic leaves then exerting upward a tensile force corresponding to the weight of the. body.
If, when you stand up, the stop screws. are not tightened, the elastic blades 17 automatically slide by their own weight into the rest posit.ion.
In order to be able to fix the chair in the seated position, a stop lever arm 24 is provided, rigidly joined to the rotation journal 25. The journal 25 is rotatable in the box 6 and to its projecting extension is fixed the lever. hand 27. The lever 24 presses on the resilient blades in the position where they cannot yet present any arrow. In this position, an angled piece 28 of the lever 24 abuts against the inner wall of the box 6 to stop the lever 24 in this rest position. When lifting the lever 24 to. by means of the hand lever 27, the blades 17 are released. The dotted line. in fig. 5 shows the blades and the lever in the load position.
For simplicity, the necessarily inclined position of the seat and the footrest in this situation has not been. represented.
Lever 24 takes over the position. rest by elastic force or by the counterweight 29., The counterweight 29 is fixed by the screw 30.
In the chair according to fig. 2 and 4, instead of a guide arm 2, the chassis frame 41 is so formed that it ensures
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
continuous guidance in an arc of a circle on the backrest. The chair consists of a frame 4le formed of a tube, to which the seat edges are attached by the pivots 42. In addition, the frame frame has a groove 51, in which the backrest support 46 is guided by means of the journal 52. The slides 47 actuate the edges 48 and 48a, on which the canvas 49 is fixed and stretched by means of the bands 80 and 81. The handwheel 50 ensures the stopping of the headrest. The journal 42 is rigidly joined to the side edges of the seat 43 and to the lever arm 71 and pivots in the chassis frame 41.
The lever arm 71 engages at. by means of a bolt 72 in the groove 73 of the lever arm 74 pivoting on the journal 75, which is fixed in the chassis frame 41. On the side of the edge of the footrest 44 is fixed a curved guide member 70, easily pivoting on the pin 42. On the inner edge of the guide 70 slides the caster 76, attached to the end of the lever arm 74. In the seated position, the caster 76 is located on the inner ridge, invisible from the outside of the guide 70. When the seat is tilted, the caster 76 slides to the left to the point of tipping of the ridge, where the caster slides over the outer ridge and lifts the support. feet to the left, as shown by the dotted line in fig. 2. The footrest therefore only comes into play in roughly the middle lying position.
The two lever arms 71 and 74 determine an exceptionally favorable transmission ratio between the appuipieds and the seat, which also facilitates the recovery of the person when he returns to the seated position. This arrangement is clearly visible in fig. 4 where, on one side, part of the chassis frame 41 has been omitted for this purpose.
The return energy is supplied by the rubber cable 65, introduced into the chassis frame 41 and fixed to the latter by means of the journal 69, as illustrated in fig.6. The journal 52 is introduced by its recessed part into the edge of the backrest 46 - formed by an L-shaped profile - and is securely tightened by
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the wedge 53, the washer 54 and the nut- 55. On its projecting part is placed the intermediate piece 56. In addition, the journal 52 passes through the groove 62 of the chassis frame. 41, as well as by the grooves 63 of the tube 64 introduced into the chassis frame 41.
In this short tube is fixed the cable in. rubber 65 by means of rivets 66, 66a. The journal 52 ends in a thread, onto which is screwed a stop screw 57. The stop screw 57 has a recess internally, in which is hidden a pressure spring 59. This presses, d. 'on the one hand, by means of the washer 58 on the stop screw 57, on the other hand, by means of the washer 60 on the rubber ring 61, which passing through the groove 62, presses on the tube 64. The recess inside the stop screw 57 presses directly on the chassis frame 41 and thus presses together the chassis frame 41 and the backrest edge 46. If the stop screw 57 is loosened, the pin 52 and hence the support backrest 46 can slide down.
The spring 59, however, still presses the rubber ring 61 against the tube 64, so that the rubber cable also elongates. If the. elastic tension is too strong, it suffices to further loosen the stop screw 57, the spring 59 can thus extend more and press less hard on the tube 64.
This then slides under the rubber ring 61 and the rubber cable no longer extends. The stop screw 57 is then tightened in the desired position. to exit the prone position the stop screw is loosened somewhat and while lifting the rubber cable 65 assists in lifting. A push exerted by the legs on the footrest also helps to facilitate lifting.
In fig.2 and 4, we see, fixed on the stop screw 57, 57a, the hand lever 67, provided with. its end- of the handle 68, 68a.
Thus the control of the stop screw is very practical and one can choose the thread of the journal 52, such that a quarter turn of the stop screw is sufficient to actuate the stop device.
