Abstract

506,854. Adjustable seats. LORENZ, A., and GAAL, A. Feb. 12, 1938, No. 4486. [Classes 52 (i) and 52 (ii)] The adjustable seat 8 is pivoted (a) about its front edge 7 to casings 6 secured to the supporting frame 1, and (b) about its rear edge 9, to the back 10 of the chair, which is pivoted at 4 to side members 2 pivoted at 3 to the frame 1, so that as the chair is lowered, the inclination of the chair back to the seat is varied and the point of support 4 of the chair back is guided downwards along a circular arc 40. The back 10 has a telescopic extension 11 carrying a pivoted head rest 12. A rod 36 actuated by the movement of the side members 2 turns a wheel 35 and swings a foot-rest 16 from under the seat. The chair is returned to the upright position by laminated springs 17 which are housed in the recessed tubular frame 1 and are secured to slides 21 adjustable within the arms 2 by a screw 23. The outermost lamination carries a stop 18 which is ultimately thrust against a roller .19 bearing on a guide 20. A pivoted arm 27 carrying a counterweight 29 is used to lock the chair in the upright position by bearing on the spring 17 at a height which does not permit flexing. Fig. 2 shows a chair with a frame 41 providing a continuous curved guide for the adjustable back 46, and modified linkage 71, 74, roller 76 and guide 70 for moving the foot-rest 44: For returning the chair to the upright position a rubber cord is housed inside the frame 41, one end being secured to a short' tubular slide controlled by an adjuntment screw and pressure spring. Levers 67 'with knobbed ends 68 actuate. the adjustment screws 57.
