brevet d'invention.
Monsieur Ernest F r a q u el l i.

------------ Improvement in bicycles.
@ The invention relates to bicycles in which the rear wheel is driven by a chain passing over a chain pinion wedged on said rear wheel.
It consists in that the chain sprocket of the rear wheel is of non-circular shape so as to obtain variations of the engine torque at the pedal during each revolution of the sprocket, so that the resistance offered by the transmission when the torque mod- The engine is large and can be overcome by the momentum which can be imparted to this transmission while the engine torque is low.
The invention makes it possible to obtain good engagement of the chain, without chain tensioner, both in the case of direct coupling and in the case of indirect coupling.
In order to fix the ideas, the accompanying drawing shows schematically an exemplary embodiment of the invention applied to a direct transmission by chain, with a hexagonal pinion, a represents the chain wheel of the crankset, b the hexagonal pinion. gona. 1 wedged on the rear wheel and c the endless chain coupling the, wheel a to pinion 1. The arrows indicate the direction of movement.
It goes without saying that the invention allows the use of speed change both in the hub and by derailleur by means of non-circular stepped gears. These stepped gears, suitably established, can be angularly offset one by one, ,

relative to the other, if desired, to facilitate the passage of the chain. One or more non-circular pinions can be combined with one or more circular pinions.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the hexagonal shape of the pinion b indicated in the example shown, but applies to any shape of non-circular pinion giving alternating variations of the engine torque and that it extends to any non-circular chain sprocket suitably established for mounting on a bicycle rear wheel, as well as any group of stepped sprockets suitable for the same purpose.
