<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Method and apparatus for the manufacture of cast articles of all kinds by centrifugal casting
The present invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the manufacture of objects Cast of all kinds by centrifugal casting, characterized by the - arrangement, at the bottom of the drum tonrnant, of outlet channels for the metal taken at the peri- phery of the drum, an additional session being given by introduction of gas or compressed air to overcome the resistance of the centrifugal force.
It is known to automatically draw the liquid material from the rotating chamber of a centrifugal casting apparatus by means of a tube and to send it into molds which are independent of the movement of the chamber.
However, this method offers, on the one hand, the drawback of causing the slag layer to pass through the tube immersed in the molten metal and parts of this layer can be entrained in the casting.
On the other hand, machines of this kind cannot be used for cast iron and steel, since, as a result of the high melting temperatures, the materials which can be used for the feed tube are quickly destroyed.
Finally, the regulation of the supply tube presents
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
serious difficulties.
The present invention provides for the elimination of this defect by the following arrangement; the liquid material is subjected to centrifugal pressure in a closed projector drum, and is driven through a central opening of the drum, using an additional pressure means and this pressure means is in particular a gas and for example , compressed air, the use of which for the compression of matter is common.
The appended drawing gives schematically, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of the invention: FIG. I is a longitudinal section, with the motor set at a right angle, for the sake of clarity of the drawing.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same apparatus.
Such an apparatus consists essentially of a drum I, protected against molten metals by a refractory lining 2 and provided with a central outlet tube 3, into which open one or denx aanawc 4, drilled radially in the bottom of the drum. .
At the inlet of the channels 4 are provided pockets 5 intended to facilitate the introduction of the molten material into the channels 4, without reducing the flow rate of the material or altering its continuity.
The upper part of the. drum offers a filling opening 6, closed by a hermetic cap 7, supported by a cap 9 by means of a threaded rod 8, pierced with a channel 10 for the entry of compressed air.
A cone II is supported by its rounded end on a stop 12 pierced like the plug 7 for the passage of compressed air; the threaded rod passes through a cross member 13 provided with a flywheel 14, the hub of which has a thread corresponding to that of the rod 8.
In addition, as seen in Figure 2, the rod 8 connected to the compressed air line 15 carries a longitudinal groove 30 which, by means of a key or the like
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
not shown in the drawing, prevents it from turning.
The flywheel 14, held up and down by the cross member 13 raises or lowers the plug 7 depending on the direction in which it is rotated.
The drum I rests on a ball bearing 16 and can be set in rapid rotation by the motor 17 by means of a friction coupling, the friction disgue 18 meshing with the corresponding enooohe of the ring 19 rigidly. tied to the drum.
To counterbalance the pressure of the disc 18, rollers 20 on which the crown 19 of FIG. 2 rests are provided *
The axis 29 of the motor 17 and those of the rollers 20 rotate in eccentric bearings 21 to ensure, in the event of wear. the strictly concentric position of the drum in relation to its -stage *
The drum is surrounded by a cage 24 which carries the bearings 22 of the rollers and 23 of the motor shaft 29.
The inner part 25 of the cage carries the bearing 16, the cross member 13 is held by Uprights 26 fixed to the cage 24 and can pivot in the direction of the arrow in Figure 2 after loosening the hole or 27 and lifting the cap 7, for easy filling of the drum.
It is preferable to make an opening 28 in the cage 24 for access to the tambaar with a view to possible heating.
To operate the device, it suffices to remove the orou 27, raise the plug 7 and rotate the cross member I3 according to the arrow shown in Figure 2; the drum I is then rotated by the motor 17 and! according to the laws of centrifugal force, the molten metal is introduced into the drum, kept fluid possibly by heating, will take the form of a liquid ring against the vertical wall of the drum.
At the same time it will also enter the bottom channels 4, but without exceeding the liquid material in the drum because, by centrifugal force, this liquid mass is arranged with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
with a parabolic contour resulting from the centrifugal movement.
No liquid metal will therefore be able to come out of the table 3, because each metal particle which progresses in the channels 4 towards the center of the drum is repelled by the centrifugal force. If you then exert additional air pressure or. of any other gas, for example, through line 15, the sum of the centrifugal force in the drum and the additional pressure exceeds the pressure created by the centrifugal force in the channels 4, which forces the material contained in the drum I & escape through these channels and the tubing, 3.
As the metal which escapes comes from the outer ring of the drum, it contains the material taken from the best zone and this casting thus refined can naturally be poured directly from the tube 3 into a mold which is independent of the movement of the drum, the outlet metal can on the other hand be regulated by stopping the additional pressure and for example by closing the pipe 15.
It goes without saying that the axis of the drum can be vertical as in the drawing, or inclined or horizontal.
Likewise, the additional pressure may be provided by compressed air, other gas, or mechanical means, such as pistons. The use of gas can possibly also provide an advantage by chemical action on the fluid metal.
It also goes without saying that the friction drive can be replaced by any other known control method, such as bevel gear or the like, likewise the device can be fixed or removable without departing from the scope of the invention.
