<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Device for casting a metal in the pasty phase.
The present invention relates to a device for casting a metal, in particular steel, in the pasty phase in a continuous casting mold.
We know the interest of the casting process in the pasty phase, that is to say at a temperature within the solidification interval of the metal considered, for the continuous cost of metals such as steel.
This process makes it possible to obtain fine and homogeneous structures which reduce segregation in the cast products.
We know from patent LU-A-86,395, a device for implementing this process, consisting of a tubular duct equipped with cooling means and slightly inclined to the horizontal. In service, this tubular conduit is disposed between on the one hand a nozzle equipping a ladle or a tundish and on the other hand a continuous casting mold, such. such that said nozzle opens into the inlet end of said tubular conduit and that the outlet end of said tubular conduit overhangs said ingot mold.
This device ensures the desired cooling of the steel from the temperature, usually comprising an overheating of 20 C to 40 C, which it presents in the ladle or the tundish and thereby creating the conditions leading to the appearance of a pasty phase in the steel before it enters the ingot mold.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The duct in question is generally made of steel, for economic reasons and it must be replaced after each cubit; these frequent replacements result in wasted time which adversely affects the productivity of the continuous casting plant.
The objective of the present invention is to propose an improved device which does not have the above-mentioned drawback.
THE. device for the casting of a metal in the pasty phase in a continuous casting pipe, which is the object of the present invention, comprising a rectilinear tubular conduit equipped with cooling means and slightly inclined on the horizontal, is essentially characterized in that said tubular conduit can rotate around its longitudinal axis.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the device of the invention, the inlet end of said tubular conduit is closed by a plate in which there is formed a central opening intended to deliver passage to said nozzle and the outlet end of said tubular conduit - the air opens into a chamber communicating the interior space of said tubular conduit with the ingot mold.
Advantageously, said chamber is provided with at least one gas injection device.
According to the invention, said tubular conduit is advantageously made of a material which is a good conductor of heat, in particular copper, so as to be able to easily reach a high thermal flux for cooling the molten metal.
Also according to the invention, the angle @ of inclination of the longitudinal axis of said tubular conduit is between 2 and 30., These two values define a range of angles of inclination for which the molten metal s flows naturally into the tubular conduit with sufficient speed to prevent it from freezing while undergoing

cooling giving rise to a pasty phase. The device of the invention also comprises adjustment means making it possible to vary this angle of inclination.
The speed of rotation of the tubular conduit around the longitudinal axis can obviously vary as a function of various factors such as the composition or the initial temperature of the metal to be cast. In the framework of steel casting, this speed of rotation is preferably between 0.1 t / s and 5 t / s.
The object of the present invention can be better understood with the aid of the description which follows and which refers to the single figure appended. This figure shows, in vertical axial section, a preferred variant of the device of the invention.
In this FIG. 1, the device of the invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 1, is arranged between a nozzle 2 fitted to a ladle or a tundish basket not shown, and a continuous casting mold 3.
The device 1 essentially comprises a tubular conduit 4, of circular section which can rotate around its longitudinal axis 5.
The means 6 for rotating this tubular conduit are known per se and are therefore not shown or described in detail here. The tubular conduit 4, made of copper, is provided with a water cooling circuit identified according to the inlet arrows 7 and the outlet arrows 8 of the cooling water. The inlet end of the tubular duct 4 is closed by a disc 9 in which a central opening is made Delivering passage to the nozzle 2. The outlet end of the tubular duct 4 opens into a chamber 10 delimited by an enclosure 11, which chamber 10 places the interior space of the tubular conduit 4 in communication with the interior cavity of the cloth 3.
The chamber 10 is connected to an apparatus 12 known per se, to a source, not shown, of a protective gas, for example argon.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The device finally comprises adjustment means, shown diagrammatically by a jack 13, for varying the angle a of inclination of the tubular conduit 4 relative to the horizontal, depending in particular on the size of the fraction. solid desired.
This figure makes it easy to understand the operating mode of the device of the invention.
The device 1 being positioned relative to a continuous casting mold 3, a ladle or a casting basket, not shown, is brought into a position such that its nozzle 2 is engaged in the opening formed in the closing disc 9. The tubular duct 4 is rotated about its longitudinal axis 5. When the superheated liquid metal coming from the nozzle 2 flows into the tubular duct 4, it forms a vein 14 there which is entrained in rotation by the movement of the tubular conduit 4. and drive is however only part (and the Liquid metal soon falls back under the effect of gravity. It thus frees the portion of the tubular conduit 4 with which iL was in contact and can therefore cool down while it completes its revolution.
The liquid metal cooling surface is constantly renewed, due to the essential condition that the tubular conduit is not filled with liquid metal. The rotation of the tubular conduit 4 generates high deformation speeds within the metal vein 14; therefore, and despite the presence of solidified particles which give rise to the pasty phase, the metal 14 retains sufficient fluidity to flow into the ingot mold 3. A protective gas such as argon, introduced by the device 12 provides protection of the liquid metal, respectively pasty, against oxidation in the tubular conduit 4 and in the chamber 10.
By way of example, blooms of section 220 mm × 220 mm, made of steel containing 0.7% C, were poured with this device, with a flow rate of 20 t / h. The steel's initial overheating was 25 C; The temperature
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The size of the steel in the nozzle was thus 1505 C. The steel was poured into a tubular conduit with a length of 1 m and an internal diameter of 0.2 m, inclined by 7 with respect to horizontal and rotating at a speed of 0.5 t / s.
The tubular conduit was cooled by water ensuring the evacuation of a heat flow of 0.54 MW. Under these conditions, a solid fraction of 26% by volume was obtained in the steel entering the ingot mold.
In the device of the invention, the incLiné tubular conduit has a sufficiently large diameter not to be filled with the liquid metal which circulates there. The tubular duct preferably has a circular section, in order to ensure as uniform lateral drive of the metal as possible during the rotational movement. This rotational movement increases the heat exchange surface between the tubular conduit and the liquid metal; it also causes agitation of the Liquid metal, which increases the heat exchange coefficient inside the tubular conduit.
