<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Shock absorber".
The present invention relates to a shock absorber for a weighing apparatus, more particularly for a so-called suspended scale which can sometimes be located at more than the height of a man above the floor; its purpose is to provide a construction which makes it possible to adjust, from the floor, the braking force of the shock absorber.
According to the present invention, the shock absorber consists of an assembly of two cylinders, one of which is placed inside the other with a gap through which the brake fluid can flow, in case of displacement. piston movable in the inner cylinder relative to the assembly in question, from the space on one side of the cylinder to that on the other side, the inner cylinder being fixed and the outer cylinder for

can be moved preferably from the bottom in such a way relative to the inner cylinder that the width of the passage opening for the brake fluid and hence the brake force of the shock absorber can be adjusted.
For this purpose, the outer cylinder is preferably screwed onto the inner cylinder so that by rotating its lower end in one or the other direction, it can be screwed up or down.
The adjustable passage for the brake fluid is preferably obtained by the fact that there is on the bottom of the outer cylinder, an elevation in the form of a truncated cone, the peripheral surface of which cooperates with the inner edge of the inner cylinder open from the bottom; depending on the position of the outer cylinder relative to the inner cylinder, the annular tent between this peripheral wall and the lower edge in question is more or less wide and the brake fluid therefore encounters greater or less resistance in this slot.
For the explanation, reference is made to the drawing which shows in vertical section, by way of example, a shock absorber according to the invention. The shock absorber consists of an inner cylinder 1, open from the bottom, the axis of which is placed vertically and in which a piston 2 can move up and down. The upper bottom 4 of this cylinder has a small hole 5 through which air can escape when the cylinder is filled with brake fluid, for example oil.
The cover 4 has a hollow central button 6, directed upwards, the upper edge of which is widened in the shape of a funnel and through which liquid can be poured into the inner cylinder. The piston rod 3 passes through the hole 6a of the button 6 towards the outside and with sufficient play not to interfere with the filling of the internal cylinder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By means of the button 6, the cylinder 1 is suspended from an arm of a plate 7 which is fixed to a chair 8.
The cover 4 is provided with an external thread on which is engaged the upper end, provided with a nut thread 9, of the external cylinder 10; between the two walls of the cylinders there is an annular space of sufficient width so that the liquid can flow without appreciable resistance. At the lower part, the cylinder 10 is closed by a cover 11 fixed to it and which has on the inside an elevation 12 in the form of a truncated cone which cooperates as a valve body with the lower edge, functioning as a seat, of the cylinder. inner 1. The cover 11 engages with its edge 13 around the outer cylinder 10 so that it can be grasped with the hand to rotate the outer cylinder in either direction.
The peripheral wall of the inner cylinder is provided, at a relatively short distance under the cover 4, with a few holes 15; about two thirds of its length above the lower edge, it also has a few holes 15a. Through these holes the liquid in the shock absorber can flow, in the event of upward movement of the piston 2, out of the space located above the piston and through the annular slot between the two walls. cylinders towards the annular opening between the elevation 12 and the lower edge of the cylinder 1, to then reach the space of the cylinder located under the piston 2; in the case of a downward movement of the piston, the liquid flows in the opposite direction.
The resistance that the liquid thus encounters is determined mainly by the width of the slot between the elevation 12 and the lower edge of the cylinder 1. This width can be easily adjusted from below by screwing up or down.

the lower ke outer cylinder relative to the inner cylinder by grasping the cover 13 of the outer cylinder.
Even when the shock absorber is placed on a suspended weighing device which is more than man's height above the floor, this simple manipulation can be carried out very easily.
The normal level of the oil in the shock absorber is indicated in L.
