Liquid pump. This invention relates to a liquid pump, which is suitable, for example, for delivering molten metal from a melting crucible into mold boxes or molds for the production of stereotypes. This pump comprises, in the known manner, a cylinder and a piston with relative movement with respect to one another, and it is characterized in that the cylinder is capable of sliding vertically with respect to the piston and in and out. liquid to be pumped to make it flow into the cylinder over the upper edge of the latter and raise it towards the piston, so as to force it out of the pump.
These arrangements can be established so that the pump, when used for the aforementioned use, can deliver a constant quantity of molten metal at each operation regardless of small variations in the level of molten metal contained in the crucible.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, FIG. 1 is a vertical section of an embodiment of the pump in the working position on a melting crucible; Fig. 2 is a plan of part of the members shown in FIG. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing the pump delivering molten metal. In the construction shown, the pump comprises a cylindrical bowl 2 forming a cylinder, movable vertically, open at its upper end and closed at its lower end, this bowl-shaped cylinder being arranged to contain a measured quantity of liquid at its lower end. pump.
The cylinder dre 2 is fixed to the lower end of a rod 21, which rises through an axial opening of a stationary pump piston 3 and through the tubular rod of this piston. At its upper end, the rod 2 & is guided in a hole provided at the upper end of a bracket 5 which is fixed to the upper part of a bracket 6. The bracket 6 is fixed to the upper rim of the crucible 1, and protrudes towards the inside above the upper end of the crucible.
The crucible 1, shown in the drawing, may be of a construction ordinarily employed in furnaces serving to melt metal for the casting of stereotypes. The cylinder 2 is guided in its vertical endings by an annular part 7 forming at the same time a deci # asseur organ. This part called hereafter guide-scraper,
is secured to the lower part of the console element 6 extending inwardly and is provided with internal radial projections 7a arranged to come into contact with the outer surface of the cylinder and to guide the latter in its up-and-down movements.
The cylinder 2 can be raised or lowered by means which will now be described. Its support rod 21 is provided at its upper end with a rack 2.1, which meshes with a pinion 4v mounted on a shaft 4, one end of which is journaled in the upper end of the console 5 and the other end of which is supported by a console 5b secured to the upper part of the crucible 1 in alignment with the console 5 (fig. 2). The shaft 4 receives a rotational movement using a crank 41.
The pump piston 3 has a diameter such that it fits exactly inside the cylinder 2, has a slightly concave shape on its underside and has a central opening which communicates with the internal cavity. a tubular rod 31, with the aid of which the piston is connected to the underside of the upper element of the console 6.
The piston 3 and the rod 3a are axially aligned with the cylinder 2 and the rod 21, passes axially through the piston and its rod and through an opening 61, from the end of the console 6 to which the rod 31, is subject.
On the console 6 is mounted above the tubular rod 31, a pipe 8 which has at the lower part of its rear end an opening communicating with the opening 6a and, at its upper part, an opening for the passage of rod 211; this tubing extends outwardly and v a slanting downward to its orifice so that the molten metal can be delivered through the tubing into a stereotype molding box, for example, not shown. The piston 3 is fixed and the cylinder 2 is driven in a reciprocating motion.
The pieces are arranged so that the lower part of the annular scraper guide 7 is located below the level of the molten metal which the crucible contains. Daris its lowest position, which is the one shown in fig. 1, the cylinder is also placed air below substantially the lowest level of molten metal in the crucible. In its lowered position, the upper end of the cylinder 2 is located inside the lower end of the guide 7 and below the fixed piston 3, as shown in FIG. 1.
Sufficient space is left between the sail lies 7n1 to allow the molten metal to pass freely from bottom to leiiit inside the annular scraper guide -7, then over the upper edge of cylinder 2 to enter this cylinder, the surface metal being excluded from the cylinder 2 by the annular scouring member, so that the slag likely to float on the surface is prevented from entering the cylinder.
The amount of metal pumped with each entire lift stroke of Cylinder 2 is always the same regardless of the level of metal inside the crucible, unless that level falls below the minimum level limit. molten metal, which limit, as it was said above, is the top of the cylinder occupying its lowest position.
Stopping means are provided to limit the back and forth movements of the cylinder. In the example of FIG. 1, a tie collar 2 # 'carried by the rod 2 "is arranged to abut against the console and limit the upward movement of the rod and of the cylinder, and a similar collar 2a is provided to abut against the top of the tri-bulb 8 and limit the downward movement of this rod and of the cylinder.
By adjusting the position of the collars 2e, 21 (', it is possible to adjust exactly the quantity of molten metal delivered at each operation of the pump, so that the quantity of nikal delivered to this operation is just that which is suitable for the work envisaged.
When the pump is used to deliver molten metal, the pump is advantageously provided with means preventing the penetration of slag. Cylinder 2 is filled with molten metal of the purest and best quality, and if in any interval between pump operations a slight grime or slag forms on the surface of the metal.
contained in the annular scouring member 7, this dirt would be eliminated and would not penetrate into the cylinder because, when the cylinder rises, the metal which the scouring member contains is displaced, the metal located above the cylinder flowing over the sides of said cylinder and descending along the outer face of the cylinder to enter the crucible 1 during this movement of raising the cylinder. When the cylinder is raised, the dross which may have formed in the annular scraper guide is thrown out of this guide by the cylinder.
The internal cavity of the rod 31, of the fixed piston 3 is slightly conical as shown, and as the tubing 8 is inclined, there is no place where the molten metal is liable to lodge and solidify, so that the fluid lines of the pump. stay clean. The pump can work with great economy and high efficiency.
Although the pump shown is particularly intended for the distribution of molten metal, it can also be applied to the distribution of other liquids.
