Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 191%.
Application filed September 25, 1915. Serial No. 52,657.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMEs H. MACKALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candy-Dispensers; of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dispensers especially adapted to be used for holding candy and consists of the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the character indicated which is of simple structure and which holds the candy in a manner to protect the same from dirt or other foreign substances.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view out on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The dispenser comprises a body 1 of glass having at its lower side a neck 2. The body 1 is provided at its top side with an opening 3 which is normally closed by means of a screw cap 4 said cap being provided with a rubber washer 5. When the cap 4: is removed from the top of the body 1 the candy may be poured through the opening 3 into the said body.
The body 1 is mounted upon a stand which includes legs .6 and a sleeve 7 is supported between the legs 6 and fits snugly around the neck 2. The lower end of the neck 2 terminates short of the lower end of the sleeve 7 and the sleeve 7 is provided at its side with a slot 8.
A rod 9 is pivotally mounted upon the frame of which the legs 6 are component parts and the said rod carries at one end the valve 10 adapted to enter the slot 8. A rubber washer 11 is mounted at the upper side of the valve 10 and is adapted to engage against the inner surface of the neck 2 whereby an air tight closure is provided for the body 1. The rod 9 joins with the valve 10 at one side thereof so that the valve 10 may readily enter the slot 8 and may also be removed from the same. An arm 12 is mounted upon a cross piece 12' of the stand and one end of the rod 9 passes under the said arm. The said cross piece is provided with a curved slot 13' which receives a pin 14 carried by the arm 12 whereby the said arm may be moved in a horizontal plane over the cross piece but is held against vertical tilting movement. A spring 13 is interposed between the arm 12 and the rod 9 and is under tension with a tendency to hold the valve 10 at an elevated position. The rod 9 is pivoted to the arm 12 for vertical swinging movement.
A ring 1 1 is connected with the legs 6 by means of spring 15 and a detachable cup 16 fits in the ring 14. The cup 16 is provided at its upper portion with a flared end 17 which surrounds the lower portion of the sleeve 7. The internal diameter of the sleeve 7 is approximately the same as the internal diameter of the lower portion of the cup 16.
In this form of the invention the candy is placed in the body 1 and when it is desired to remove some of the candy therefrom the outer end of the rod 9 is swung in an upward direction whereby the valve 10 and washer 11 are moved down away from the lower end of the neck 2. The rod 9 is then turned laterally so that the valve 10 and the washer 11 thereon are removed from the slot 8. The candy then flows down through the neck 2 from the body 1 and enters the cup 16. When the solid column of candy has accumulated in the cup the rod 9 is turned whereby the valve 10 is inserted through the slot 8 in the sleeve 7 and assumes a closed position in the said sleeve.
The cup 16 may then be detached from the ring 14 and removed from under the lower end of the sleeve 7. When the cup 16 is removed from under the sleeve '7' and the valve 10 is in a closed position in the said sleeve the said valve sustains the weight of the candy in the neck 2 and body 1 and hence the flow of the candy from the said body through the neck is interrupted.
From the above description taken in con junction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that a candy dispenser and con tainer of simple and durable structure is provided and that the candy is preserved in a sanitary condition and may be accurately measured at the time that it is withdrawn from the container.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A dispenser comprising a stand and a container, a sleeve mounted thereon, and
adapted to receive the neck of said container, the rod and arm and adapted to maintain said sleeve being provided with a slot 10- the rod toward the upper edge of the slot. 1;-
catecl between its ends, a rod passing In testimony whereof I affix my signathrough the slot, a valve mounted on the ture,1n presence of two wltnesses.
rod and adapted to close the passage way JAMES H. MAGKALL. through the sleeve, an arm pivotally mount- Witnesses:
ed on the stand and pivotally connected with E. H. MoIN'rosH,
the rod, and a spring interposed between VILLIAM P. CLY'NE.
