Be it known that I, ANTENOR ASSORATI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle Covers or Caps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in the covers or caps for bottles orlike receptacles, and it has for its object to provide a device capable of being conveniently and expeditiously attached to the neck of the bottle, for example, in such manner that when the bottle is at rest orin a standing position the cap will serve to efiectually close the mouth of the bottle.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that when the device is placed in position to empty its contents even to the slightest extent, the cap will automatically uncover the mouth of the bottle, and whereby when the bottle is restored to its standing position the cap will automatically close the mouth of the receptacle.
Theinvention consists inthe novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Figure l is a side elevation of the cap or cover, partially in section, illustrating its ap-' plication to the neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cap or cover. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the body portion of the device. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken practically on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken essentially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the device in a slightly modified form.
In carrying out the invention, the body portion of the device consists preferably of two spring clips 10, anda bar 11 connecting the two clips, the attachment between the clips being effected opposite their open portion, and the ends of the clips are preferably bowed out= ward as shown in Fig. 4, in order to facilitate the clips being passed round the neck of a at top and bottom with arms which extend at an angle from the bar or rod to an engagement with the clips; and the upright portion of the bar is provided with a spring 12, which extends in such a direction as to face the receptacle to which the attachment is made. This spring may be either attached to the connecting bar, or as shown in the drawings it may constitute an integral portion of it, in which latter event it is struck up from the bar. And I desire it to be understood that the clips and the connectingbar may be made from one piece of metal, or they may be united in any approved manner.
The arms of the connecting bar are each provided with an aperture extending through them, and the said aperture is usually of rectangular or polygonal shape. The apertures in the connecting bar 11, are adapted to receive a shank 13, of corresponding cross sectional shape, and the said shank is of suffi cient length to extend through both of the arms of the connecting bar, and is engaged by the spring 12 of the said bar, the spring serving to hold the shank 13 in whatever position it may be placed, and at the same time it admits of any adjustment of the shank.
The shank is provided at its upper end with an arm 13, and the said arm is preferably curved in a rearwardly direction from the shank, and then upwardly and forwardly forming essentially a crooked or curved arm at the top of the shank. In the upper end of this crooked or curved arm 13 of the shank, a stem or rod 14, is pivoted, which stem or rod is connected in any suitable or approved manner with the cap or cover 15, adapted to fit over and normally close the mouth of the receptacle to which the device is applied. The stem or rod 14, is carried downward from its pivot point within the crooked or curved arm 13, and is provided with an attached weight 16, practically counterbalancing the weight of the cap or cover.
When an application of the device is to be made to a bottle, the clips are forced around the neck thereof, and the shank 1.3 is adjusted until the cap or cover fits over the mouth of the bottle. While the bottle is in an upright position the cap or cover effectually closes the mouth of the bottle; but when the bottle is lifted and inclined in a position to pour out any of its contents, the weight 16, will move in direction of the mouth of the bottle and force the cap or cover from over the mouth, and said weight will hold the cap or cover in that position until the bottle is again restored to an upright position, whereupon the weight will act to automatically bring the cap or cover over the mouth of the bottle. The inner face of the cap or cover is preferably provided with an elastic cushion or washer 16.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a slight modification in the form of the device, in which a single clip 10 only is employed; and in this event the clip is secured to the body bar 17, comprising an upright member and horizontal members projecting from the ends of the upright section. The shank is passed through the horizontal members of the body bar, the clip is secured to the vertical member thereof, and the lower horizontal member is carried downward to an engagement with the rear end of the shank 12, forming thereby a spring 18. The simplicity of the device is apparent, as is likewise its utility, and it is also evident that the device may be conveniently andexpeditiously applied to any receptacle, and that when the receptacle is in an upright position its mouth will be effectually sealed and the moment that the receptacle is inclined its mouth will be uncovered.
Having thus described my invention, I
consisting of a clip, a shank capable of a sliding movement in relation to the clip, a counterbalanced cap or cover pivotally connected with the shank, and means for holding the latter in place after it has been adjusted in relation to the clip, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A cap or cover for receptacles, the same consisting of a clip, a shank capable of a sliding movement in relation to the clip, a counterbalanced cap or cover pivotally connected with the shank, and a spring connected with the clip and adapted to bear on the shank to keep the latter in place after it has been adjusted in relation to the clip, as and for the purpose specified.
. 3. In a cap or cover for bottles or like receptacles, the combination, with clips, and a connecting bar uniting the clips, of a shank adjustably held in the connecting bar, and a weighted cap or cover connected with the upper end of the shank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a cap or cover for bottles or like receptacles, the combination, with a clip, a body 'bar attached to the clip, and a spring-controlled shank adj ustably located in the body bar, of a cap or cover pivotally connected with the shank, and a counterbalance weight connected with the cap or cover below its pivot point, as and for the purpose specified.
