<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La fig.I est une élévation représentant le ioyer à feu nu tel qu'on le voit de l'avant, certaines parties étant supposées arrachées;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La fig.2 est une vue en plan de la chaudière montrant la. disposition des carneaux;
La fig.3 est une élévation en coupe prise suivant l'axe de la fig.I;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Au-dessus de ce cendrier et au-dessous de la grille à feu nu est prévu un second cendrier p qui prend appui sur la plaque à rebord el , la dite plaque présentant une grande ouverture centrale de forme hexago- nale qui, normalement, est recouverte -par le cendrier ;dans ces conditions, on empêche tout courant d'air depuis le dessous de ce cendrier vers le foyer à feu nu, l'air destiné à ce dernier foyer étant admis par unregistre p1 disposé sur la façade p2 de ce second cendrier, la dite façade étant munie d'une poignée p3, Les cendres qui sont recueillies dans le second cendrier peuvent être évacuées dans le grand cendrier inférieur o;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
en même temps, on retiendra la chaleur rayonnée par la partie extérieure de la chaudière a; l'espace situé au-dessus de la plaque supérieure d de la chaudière peut aussi être clos ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The subject of a patent application filed in England on March 15, 1934, in the name above.
The present invention relates to boilers for domestic use and, more particularly, to boilers heated by means of coke or the like, which are used to supply the hot water necessary for baths, radiators and for other domestic uses, independent of kitchen stoves; when these so-called "independent" boilers are installed in kitchens or in other rooms of an apartment, they have the drawback of not ensuring the same comfort as ordinary hearths, but, on the other hand, they can unnecessarily heating the rooms in which they are installed when used for heating water during the summer months.
In accordance with the present invention, it is proposed
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
either to ensure the hot water supply by means of an independent boiler without inevitably resulting in the obligation to heat the kitchen or any other room in which the boiler is installed, or to ensure independent heating The room is maintained and controlled without a second fireplace or other flues being necessary, the appliance used being capable of replacing the independent boiler ordinarily used.
According to the present invention, there is provided a hot water boiler of the independent type, that is to say independent of a kitchen stove, boiler with which is combined a hearth or an open fire grate in removed or inserted into the boiler and whose frame is combined with that of the boiler.
To the rear part of the open fire hearth, which, for convenience, forms part of the front of the boiler and can be tilted forward from a level higher than that of the ignited fuel to the upper front part of the boiler, one or more hinged or removable doors are provided which give access to the front bars of the boiler hearth, in order to allow the said bars to be removed for cleaning or preparing the fire; normally the door (s) will be kept closed so as to retain the heat, but they can be left open when the boiler has been turned on, when it is desired to heat the room without using the fireplace on an open fire.
The bottom of the boiler is fitted with a removable grid or bars, of the tilting or oscillating type allowing the cenares to be shaken and comprising a control device at the front of the fireplace.
The invention is described below, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
The fig.I is an elevation representing the ioyer with naked fire as seen from the front, certain parts being supposed torn off;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the boiler showing the. arrangement of flues;
Fig.3 is an elevation in section taken along the axis of Fig.I;
Fig. 4 is a plan section taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 3, with half of each of the inner grates removed and the open fire hearth ashtray being pulled forward.
The boiler a1 shown with water chambers on the sides a1 and at the rear a is arranged behind the open fire hearth b which is recessed or inserted into the lower part of the boiler. The inclined rear wall of the open fire hearth is established so as to form part of the facade c of the boiler which extends over the entire width of said boiler; it can support the refractory brick bl of the grate of the open fire hearth, the inclined part c extending from a level higher than that of said refractory brick to the upper plate d of the boiler, a plate which overhangs the hearth at naked fire.
The side frames e which support the side refractory bricks b2 of the open fire grate, are connected to each other by a flanged plate el, fixed by means of screws e2; these side frames e are made flush with the sides of the boiler and their rear edge is given a shape which allows them to rest against the sides of the front part c of the boiler. The front frame of the open fire hearth extends upwards to the upper plate d of the boiler and the cross member f1 of said frame supports a cap or hood g located above the open fire hearth.
The elements e, f of the open fire hearth frame and the front c of the boiler are attached to the boiler by means of long horizontal bolts h which screw into bosses formed in the upper front and lower front corners of the chambers' l 'water and who wear eorous hl screwed
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
at the ends of the said bolts which protrude from the frame f the flanged plate el is also fixed to the front c of the boiler by means of bolts e3 placed at the rear of the grate of the open fire hearth.
In the inclined part c1 of the front of the boiler is provided a rectangular opening c2 in which are housed the front bars 1 of the furnace of the boiler; these bars which new to be independent of each other or come from cast iron are held in position by means of notches c3 formed at the upper end and at the lower end of the opening; these bars can be removed by lifting them so as to release them from the lower notches, in order to clean or prepare the fire.
Normally, the opening c2 is closed off by means of a removable door j provided with hooks j1 on its sides, said hooks engaging on ears c4 in the form of wedges placed on the edges of the opening. ture; a neat or a button j2 can be provided on the front part of the door to facilitate removal or; ease in -olace thereof.
The hearth of the boiler is furnished, at its lower part, with bars forming two removable grids which bear on lugs or rims kl made of cast iron with the internal nostrils of the boiler; below these grids is provided a transverse shaft 1 which rests on two consoles 11 fixed on the front c of the boiler; the shaft is provided with two arms 12 extending in opposite directions and which are connected by transverse bars 13 disposed below the grids k, towards the front and rear ends of said grids.
A connecting rod m directed downwards and fixed in the middle of the shaft 1 is connected to a rod m1 to a button or, a wire handle $ placed at the front of the fireplace, -the way that one can shake or clean the fire from the boiler causing the shaft 1 to oscillate, oscil-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
lation which has the effect of tilting the grids k.
It can be seen that the open fire hearth b is furnished, at its lower part, with a removable grid n which rests on rear supports nl fixed on the flanged plate el; the front edge n2 of the grid is raised so as to hold the fuel in place and is supported, for example, by tenons f2 which project internally on the frame f, the lower part of the grid being provided with notches which s' engage on the tenons in such a way as to prevent any accidental sliding of the grille forwards.
In the bottom of the frame and extending from front to back under the two fireplaces is a large ashtray o whose front ol is provided with a handle o2 and a suitable air register 03 which controls the 'air intake in the furnace of the boiler; the facade o1 can also have a notch 04 for the passage of the rod m1, which is guided, at this point, by an opening or eye m3 formed in a vertical rib e4 placed below the rim plate el.
Above this ashtray and below the open fire grate is a second ashtray p which rests on the rimmed plate el, the said plate having a large central hexagonal opening which, normally, is covered by the ashtray; under these conditions, any draft is prevented from the underside of this ashtray towards the open fire hearth, the air intended for this last hearth being admitted by a register p1 placed on the front p2 of this second ashtray, the said front being provided with a handle p3, The ashes which are collected in the second ashtray can be evacuated in the large lower ashtray o;
to do this, the ashtray p is pulled outwards, so as to bring it to the position indicated in fig.4, by lifting it; a scraper bar p4 mounted on hinges at n3 below the grid n is used to empty the ashtray when it is pulled out, the ashes then falling through the central opening of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the plate e1 in the lower ashtray o.
The water chambers placed on the sides al of the boiler increase in width, starting from the horizontal plane where the inclined part c1 of the front of the boiler begins to overhang the hearth b; there is therefore at the bottom of the boiler, a relatively small grate; but, a little above this grate, the combustion space widens towards the facade as can be seen in fig. 3, so that we can have a heating surface and a significant fuel capacity; an opening dl made in the upper cap d of the boiler allows fuel to be added after the cover d2 has been removed; the duct g intended for the evacuation of the fumes is placed directly behind the opening dl.
Appropriate threads r, r1, r2 are provided to accommodate the water supply, return and drain pipes, as well as one or more access holes, if desired.
The combustion gases coming from the open fire hearth b which forms the front part of the combined appliance escape, from the top of the sloping back c, into horizontal flues s on both sides of the boiler , and, then pass through a junction device! three-way which is connected, for its part, with the outlet duct g of the boiler hearth. Separate registers t1 t2 t3 are provided for the three flues entering the device t, the two registers corresponding to the side flues being connected to each other by means of a rod t4 and two buttons or separate control handles u ul, intended for the two fireplaces being arranged in such a way that they can be operated from the front of the fireplace.
The front part of the fireplace opening may be surrounded on each side by a vane v tiled or adorned in any other way; this panel will preferably be removable; this will give the appliance the appearance of an ordinary domestic hearth, as can be seen in fig. 1 and,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
at the same time, the heat radiated by the external part of the boiler a will be retained; the space above the upper plate d of the boiler can also be closed;
@ for this purpose, the front frame f will be extended above the hood g and fitted with a hinged door which, once opened, (as indicated in dotted lines in fig. 3 will allow the fuel to be introduced into the boiler; handle w1 with an appropriate latch w2 allows the door to be opened and closed, a stop device w3 with guide can be provided if desired. A gallery can be placed on the sides and at the back of the 'opening d1; this gallery can also be arranged at the edge of the upper plate d, as indicated at x on f ig.3.
The boiler a and the front frame f can re--. place on a frame y in front of which is arranged a removable tray. z intended to collect the ashes which may fall from the ashtrays or from the ashtray grate on an open fire.
By virtue of the combination which has just been described of a bare-fire rent b and a hot-water boiler a, a truly independent boiler is obtained which can be used not only independently of the kitchen stove, but either alone, with or without room heating depending on whether the door j located above the open fire hearth is opened or closed, or at the same time as the open fire hearth when the room requires heating ; it is still possible not to operate the boiler, the heating of the room then being obtained by means of the single hearth b on an open fire, if desired. The two hearths can be set up so as to burn the same fuel, for example coke, and one or both of said hearths can be provided with devices intended for the combustion of gas.
It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular construction details which have been described; the single door can be hinged or replaced by a pair of doors mounted by means of laterally placed hinges and the space above the boiler can be /
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
left open, disregarding the door w, the upper plate d of the boiler in this case being preferably provided with folded edges or the like. The boiler alone or the boiler and the fireplace. open fire can be heated with gas.
