<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
EMI11.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

Improvements to washing machines it is well known that washing machines manufactured until then have in principle either a wooden tub resting on suitable feet, or a copper tub resting on columns supporting a column. heating rent. However, all the known models of machines provided with a rent have the drawback of not allowing easy dismantling of the vessel in order to separate it from the hearth. In addition, the latter is generally constructed of sheet metal which undergoes the inaction of reception or fumes and wears out, therefore, very quickly.
The invention provides a first improvement which, on the contrary, gives the ioyer very great robustness while allowing easy assembly of the tank which can therefore be made of galvanized sheet since it can be dismantled and made. galvanize.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This first improvement therefore consists in adapting the washing machine to a stove of the type used for heating laundromat tubs and the outer shape of which is modified so as to remove the tub from the machine at the same time. than to maintain it in its axis, by u :. special rim designed on the periphery of the fireplace and allowing the bowl to be fixed to the fireplace by bolts on an external part to the wall of the bowl or simply its fitting into the fireplace. In addition, the rent, entirely made of cast iron, can withstand water and smoke.
Likewise, the machines having a paddle beater have this common defect of having a fixed stroke of the control mechanism and consequently of the said beater. ur, it is certain that the washing conditions vary according to whether they are heavy and bulky items such as sheets, or light items such as handkerchiefs and requiring great agitation of the water. In the first case, if the machine is adjusted with too great a stroke, its manual control becomes peniole and operation with the engine pushes the latter to its limit. In the second case, if the stroke is too short, the washing is performed imperfectly. A constant stroke machine cannot therefore meet the various needs of the practice.
One of the improvements contemplated by the invention consists in providing on washing machines a device allowing the amplitude of the angular movement of the paddle beater to be adjusted in order to adapt it at will to these varied needs, in modifying either the stroke of the small end or the position of the point of application of the big end, the articulation axis of one or other of these parts being mounted on the part to which it connects the connecting rod so that it can be moved radially on this part.
This arrangement can be achieved by fixing the axis in question on a sliding rule, or by mounting it in a slide, or by any other suitable means: adjustment holes, etc.

The invention also provides a handle or articulated crank,

and, to this e1'I "and, provides various means to achieve the assembly without having to completely remove the cover and replace it by another as is done with some machines.
We also know that after each operation: threshing, rinsing the laundry, the housewife must wring out.

EMI4.2
The invention therefore also provides a device for automatically operating the ciebi-ayage and the clutch with two threshing and spinning systems. .ni'in, the invention also provides for improvements in the construction of the paddles of the beater.
According to one of the perrectionnementa referred to by the invention, the paddles of the beater are advantageously constructed of sheet metal or enamelled cast iron. Such pallets have the advantage of being perfectly stainless. On the other hand, their walls are much smoother than those of wooden pallets, so that the

movements of this water are found to be facilitated, and the losses of protection reduced, besides, they lend themselves easily to receiving any desirable conformation.

independently .. ae the material used for the construction of these pallets, the invention also aims to build ae clean pallets to promote maximum production ae swirl.
For this purpose, according to the invention, the pallets, preferably four in number, have a suitably curved elm and are opposed in pairs by their concavities.

In the embodiment of a washing machine according to the invention, said machine comprises a tub 1 preferably resting on an independent hearth 45 (fig.l and 2).
The fireplace is of the so-called laundry room type, made of cast iron and very robust. The vessel may be made of copper or, better, of galvanized sheet which is relatively easy to maintain if the vessel can be easily removed or dismantled.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
EMI7.1
To this end, the tank 1 is fixed to the rent 4 thanks to a rim 45a (fig.3) fitted on the hearth and comprising a few ears corresponding to ear brackets 47 fixed on the boraure at the base of the tank 1. The ears at the hearth and those of the tank are secured by means of bolts 46 or any other element to be dismantled: keys, pins, etc ... and even rivets.
The fixing of the tank is thus from the outside of this one, and allows an easy and patched dismantling without the slightest
EMI7.2
risk of aeterioration, which undermines the rational use of galvanized sheet. Besides, it gives all the ease of expansion to the tank: fixing members 40 not serving as the fixing of the tank in orientation which, in reality, rests of its own weight while the existing tanks are encircled over their entire width. and cannot expand easily.
Inside the tank is a paddle beater 3,
EMI7.3
of axis 0, (fiv.1). The beater receives alternating angular movement by means of some device.
In ligure 1 and é, given as this simple example, a pinion) is wedged on the U axis and meshes with a sector oente 4 journals on an axis 0 '. The latter undergoes an alternating movement which is communicated to it by a connecting rod 6 articulated on a bevel gear 7 forming a crank plate and controlled by a pin n u wedged on the axis 9a of the drive wheel 9.
This flywheel can be actuated either by hand by a handle 13, or by an electric motor placed near with the intermediary of a belt, the handle 13 then serving to start the machine.
According to one of the improvements referred to by the invention, cn
EMI7.4
equips the machine with a device for adjusting the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the reciprocating angular movement of the paddle beater 3.
For this purpose (fig.4 here) the foot 6a ue the connecting rod 6 is carried by a ruler 19 fixed diametrically on the bevel gear 1 by two screws 20, 21. This ruler is provided with two slides 19a, 19b which pass through screws 20, 21 and which make it possible to modify its position on the pinion / so as to bring the small end 6a more or less to the pinion to the pinion and, consequently, to reduce more or less the race ae this connecting rod.
This device makes it possible to adjust at will the amplitude of the movement of the beater whatever the drive mode adopted either by plane sector with external toothing, as in the case of figures 1 and 2, or with internal toothing, or by sector. conical, or by articulated levers as in the system which will be discussed below, that is to say in a general manner, in any device actuated from an eccentric hand-operated horn member.
Instead of modifying the position of the connecting rod small end, an identical result can be obtained by modifying the position of the connecting rod big end on sector 4. FIG. 7 shows an application of this arrangement in the case of a plane sector. with external teeth. 4 designates the sector journaled around an axis 0 'and meshing with the pinion o fixed on the shaft 0 of the drum. The axis 6b of the connecting rod head is fixed in a slide 22 made radially in the sector 4, and in which its position can be adjusted at will.
These devices are moreover cited only as simple examples and can be replaced by any other device con. naked capable of varying the amplitude of the reciprocating movement either by modifying the diameter of rotation of the connecting rod small end, or by modifying the point of application of the connecting rod big end (slides, sliding bolts, etc.), in short, by any device likely to vary the stroke length.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Another improvement aimed by the invention relates to the replacement of the tooth-sector movement multiplication device by a device with articulated levers ensuring, for a movement of given amplitude of the control rod, a large amplitude of the angular movement of the control rod. u axis of the paddle beater. a first embodiment of this device is shown in Figures 8 and 9. In these figures, the connecting rod 6 is shown in phantom. On the big end 6b @ is articulated a lever 26, the opposite end of which turns with an axis 0 'corresponding to the axis of the centric sector in known systems.
The connecting rod 6 'is connected on the other hand by a connecting rod 27 and a lever 28 to the axis 0 of the beater to which it thus transmits an alternating rotational movement. FIG. 10 schematically shows the angular movements accomplished simultaneously by the big end 6a around the axis 0 'and by the axis 0 of the beater. It can be seen that when the connecting rod head goes from position to to position d, that is to say performs a rotation markedly less than 1/2 turn, lever 28 driving axis 0 changes from a 'to d', making a rotation of about 6/8 of a turn.
The device which has just been described could also be produced by replacing the lever 26 by a lever with two arms 26 'journaled at 0' (fig. 11) on which the control oielle 6 and the link 27 would then be articulated by two separate axes 6a and 27a. This arrangement would allow different radii r and R to be provided, for example with a view to reducing the stroke of the control rod.
Another variant of this device is shown in Figures 12 and 13. In this case the control rod 6 is articulated at 6b at the end of a lever 29 with two arms journalled on the axis 0 ', The opposite arm of said lever is provided with a slide 29a in which can move a cursor 30 integral with a lever 31 wedged on the axis 0 of the beater. When the big end
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
EMI10.1
db goes from a to dy having traversed around the axis ü 'an angle less than 1 = Ô, the cursor 3U driving the axis 0 in rotation is passed from a' to d 'having traversed an angle close to 25.
FIG. 14 shows another variant in which the circular movement of the big end is replaced by a reciprocating rectilinear movement. For this purpose, the axis 6b of the big end
EMI10.2
is integral with a slider j2 sliding on a ruler 33 and connected, by means of a rod 34 to a lever 35 ca-
EMI10.3
.le on the U axis of the beater. As shown in the diagram of Fig. 10 when the axis db changes from a to d, the lever dô has passed from a 'to having driven the axis U' through an angle close to a25.
However, it can be observed that, in this movement, the lever 35 would have a much faster movement due to that
EMI10.4
of the axis àb in the part a 'ci of its stroke, which would cause an irregular rotation of the beater. To avoid this inconvenience, the movement a d of the slider must be obtained using a cam of suitable profile.
EMI10.5
In another form of execution ae the cmmanae of the beater, the axis 0 of the latter carries two pinions 419 and aO (fig.16) wedged on it.
On the other hand, on an axis 9a controlled directly by the flywheel 9 (fig.l) or by means of gears or other similar devices, a particular gear 48 is wedged. This gear is not cut. than on a portion of lower circumference
EMI10.6
re at lbO 0.
The axis 9a rotates in a continuous movement in the same direction. when the cut portion of the pinion meshes with the upper gear 49, the latter and hence the threshing wheel shaft are driven in one direction. the toothing of pinion 48 leaves that of pinion 49 and, after a dead time during which the axis of the beater loses its speed, attacks the teeth of the pinion 50. This pinion and therefore the axis of the beater, are inter- born in the opposite direction of the preceding one side the necessary reciprocating movement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
EMI11.1
In another, the execution elm with the comntanae aisle of the beater \ Î1gl'l) the arDre a is carrying a their pinions 8 and 4f3 'whose two complete teeth are offset on the U axis is then shims the single pinion 49 or oO with which the pinions 4ts and 48 'alternately engage which turn the axis 0 sometimes in one direction, sometimes in the other.
Finally, this reciprocating movement can also be obtained by means of a cam device acting on the sector 4, whether the latter has internal or external teeth, and replacing the connecting rod o described above.
EMI11.2
In this case, a cam-groove of axis ol ylg.lb) rotating on an axis 0 '' acts on a journal or a roller o-d fixed on sector 4. When the cam will rotate in the direction of the arrow,
EMI11.3
it will drive the journal a4 from point u to point T 'and return it in direction 1: 3 1 in the other half-revolution. The angle '.L' 0 '' ï '' being less than lc'0 ", it will be advisable in this case to multiply this movement by a sector or another known means to obtain a larger revolution.
However, this multiplication can be eliminated by using the device shown in FIG. 19 and in which the axis of the spoke. The length of the cam is shown by the chain line ol. In this case, the continuous rotary movement is transformed without further intermedia-
EMI11.4
re in alternating rotary motion of sufficient amplitude.
Conversely, the cam groove could be practical in
EMI11.5
sector 4 and the journal or roller oG be carried by the 0 "axis.
Another improvement consists in allowing easy disassembly of the beater on everything in the case of the self-contained bowl. There are obviously many solutions allowing this disassembly and the following arrangements are given only by way of simple examples.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
In a first, the elm this execution (fig.20) the axis of the beater 53a is terminated at its end by a conical part which fits into the body of the beater.
By turning the false wing nut 54b bank on the screw 54 in the appropriate direction, the body of the beater oo comes to wedge on the conical part of the axis 53a. This wedging is sufficient for normal training, however two safety pins 53e ensure the joining of the two parts in the event that the force exerted on the false nut is insufficient. By loosening the screw 54 one easily obtains the release of the body of the beater 55 from its axis d3a.
In another embodiment (fig. 21), the fixing is carried out by means of a bayonet engagement 61 of a part of the aebre U in its upper part. The spring 62 can be completed so as to constantly pull the U axis towards the bottom of the bayonet. This spring can also be replaced by a nut fulfilling the same role.
It is obvious that many other devices allowing the easy disassembly of the beater and its removable could also be realized while remaining within the spirit of the invention.
According to another improvement aimed at by the invention, the handle 13 provided on the drive flywheel for starting the engine is mounted so as to be able to be erased or removed in normal operation. In 1. ' example shown in Figures 22 and 23, the handle 13 is articulated by means of an axis; 36 in a hub 37 provided on one of the arms of the steering wheel 9.
The fastening tab 13a of the handle is capable of being moved in a slot 37a of the hub, either to take the position shown in dotted lines which corresponds to the normal running position and towards which it is biased. by a spring 38, sojt
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
gnee 18 of FIG. 1 yet another improvement aimed at by the invention consists in providing washing machines, on which a wringer is fitted, with a device making it possible to engage the control of the extractor and simultaneously to deorayer the movement of the oatteur, and vice versa, when opening or closing the tank lid.
This device can be made from different lessons, the following will be cited as simple examples:
In a first execution elm the movable part 14 of the cover is articulated on the fixed part 16 by means of two hinges 15 and 15 '(rig. 33 to 35).
The two hinges 15 and 15 'are crossed by the control shaft 9a or by any other shaft controlled by means of appropriate pinions or members.
The first half of the hinge 15 (Fig. 33 and 34) fixed to the fixed part 16 of the cover therefore comprises aeux arms 15a and 15b which are traversed by the opening 9a or the like. The shaft is fitted between the aforesaid arms, with a sleeve 64 whose center o1 is offset from the center o2 of the shaft 9a. A lug fixed in socket 64 and engaging a convenient socket in arm 15a, or the other arm, prevents rotation of the socket around shaft 9a.
On the sleeve 64 can turn the arm 66 of the other half of the hinge fixed to the movable part 14 of the cover. This half of the hinge carries a bearing 67 in which is mounted an axis 68. On this axis can turn a receiving pinion 69 serving to control the beater and meshing, when the cover is closed, with a pinion / 0 wedged on the tree 9a.
The eccentricity of the sleeve 64 and the distance between the centers o2 of the shaft 9a and o3 of the axis 68 are such that, after opening the cover and consequently the center o3 has come to o ' 3, we have the relation:
01 0'3> 02 03 + height of a tooth.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
On the other hand, the tank 1 (fig. 1 and 2) is provided with a cover having a movable part 14 articulated by means of a hinge 1a on the fixed part 16. a locking 17 ensures the iermture of the movable part and a handle lo allows the lifting of this part.
Ur, the invention also provides a device (fig. 29 and 30) which allows two different angles of opening of the movable part 14 of the cover * - this effect, the mast part of the cover la comprises two bosses 15a, 15b. On the female part of this hinge is provided a boss 15c corresponding to the boss 15b and a removable c @ e 42 corresponding to the boss 15a When this wedge is in place, the opening is limited to position 1 of the hinge in which the boss 15a abuts against said wedge. The opening angle and approx. 115 is sufficient in most cases.
If the wedge 42 is removed, the opening movement is then limited by the bearing of the lob boss on the ioc boss (.position 11), ensuring the almost complete opening of the cover and facilitating the wringing. .
Figures 31 and 32 show the cover locking device also provided by the invention. 17a designates the locking plate fixed to the wall of the tank 1, and 17b the pivoting pin latch in a yoke 17c fixed to the movable part 14 of the cover. When the latch 17b is folded down and engages in the slot of the plate 17a the assembly is held in place thanks to the elasticity of the wood. according to the invention, the latch 17b is provided with a handle 17, d and it carries on its hub a lug 17e to which corresponds a boss 17f on the fixing lug of the yoke 17c. By exerting convenaole traction on the handle 17d it first causes the release of the latch 17b, then an angular movement of this latch bringing the lug 17e into contact with the stop 17f.
At this time the handle 17d can be used to lift the movable part 14 of the cover. This arrangement therefore ensures the unlocking and opening of a cover in a single operation, which makes it possible to remove the

It is therefore cnoit that after opening the cover, the two pinions 69 and 70 no longer stick and that the beater is ueoraye.

.The sleeve t9 has, on the race opposite to its den-iure a boss 79b capable of coming into contact with a ramp 82a formed on the arm 82 of the movable half of the hinge fixed on the movable part 14 of the cover. a bush 64 ', of the same eccentricity as the bush 64 of the hinge 15, fits the shaft 9a and is kept fixed with respect to said shaft by means of a lug 65' engaged in the bearing 71. The arm 82 therefore rotates around this sleeve 64 'as the arm 66 of the hinge 15 rotates around the sleeve 64, the movement of the movable part 14 of the cover can therefore take place normally. But by turning, the arm 82 acts, by its ramp 82a on the boss 79b of the sleeve 79 which it pushes back and the teeth 79a then mesh with the teeth 78a of the pinion 78.
This pinion is therefore tro-u ve driven by the shaft 9a and the wringer is thus engaged.
On the contrary, when the cover is lowered, the sleeve 79, pushed back by a spring 83, moves away from the pinion 78 which is located.

You disengage, but that in the movement of the cnarniere 15, the pinion 69 comes back into engagement with the pinion 70 which can then drive the beater as soon as the cover is locked.
One therefore sees that these clutches and disengages occur

automatically by simply operating the cover 14.
It is obvious that the arrangement of the screens would have been reversed without the operation undergoing the slightest modification. Many other devices can moreover be used and achieve the same goal.

that of the llecne zone, (llg.4J), we can imagine that the elm behind the blade 3 has very significant eddies;
of a bet, at the front and towards its lower part, this blade projects the water towards the outside (fig. 44) while at its upper part which is inclined radially in the opposite direction (fig. .45), it tends to produce

a call for water. For blade 8b, which presents a good angle of attack, the water tends to rise towards the nautical mile, no longer as the racial inclination of the blade produces an action in the same direction as the water called towards the sea. top is folded down by the upper part of the blade 3b, which prevents squirting against the cover, and, at the same time, it is projected radially outwards.
Behind this blade 3b there is a zone of violent backwash for the same reasons as above. The water then arrives against the blade 3c where it suffers a cnoc; worked in the same radial direction, it is projected towards the lower part causing these eddies in this zone. The above phenomena occur in the same orare aes the rear of the blade 3c. When the rotation of the beater changes direction, these phenomena are repeated but in reverse order. The stirring of the water is therefore very energetic at all points of the tank.
Of course, the invention is not limited in its implementation to the examples shown and described, but may give rise to constructive variants. In which. concerns in particular the device allowing: to adjust the stroke of the beater, it is conceivable that it can be easily adapted to the case where. The multiplication of the angular movement of this beater is obtained using a system of levers articules such as that provided for by the invention. 'Jans this case, we can provide either an adjustment of the point of application of the connecting rod big end, or an adjustment of the length of the levers or intermediate links.
On the other hand, it is also understood that the shape of these paddles of the beater may be different from that represented and that these paddles, instead of being made of sheet metal or enameled cast iron, may be established in a form exhibiting the characteristics. of the invention by means of any stainless castable material.
