<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"OVERLOAD SPRINGS AND OTHERS FOR ALL VEHICLES"
The invention relates to a particular assembly of an auxiliary suspension spring for vehicles, said spring being intended to come into action only when the load of the vehicle exceeds that permitted for the usual springs of this vehicle.
According to the invention, the auxiliary or overload spring is preferably constituted by a suitable centering semi-elliptical spring, rigidly fixed to a sole or axle mount made integral with the rear axle, the free ends of the master blade. said spring being intended to come to apply sliding against two pads integral with the vehicle spar, when the chassis is near the axle under the effect of an overload or possibly a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
violent jerk received by the carrying wheels of the vehicle.
By way of illustration, one embodiment of the subject of the invention is described below with reference to the appended schematic drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in side elevation view, the application of an overload spring, according to the invention, to a vehicle of the Ford type.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the axle mount on which said overload spring is mounted.
Fig. 3 is a detail view in partial section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1, showing the arrangement of each shoe on which the ends of the auxiliary spring rest in the event of overloading the vehicle.
As shown in Fig. 1 and 2, the overload spring 4 is semi-elliptical in shape and rests, in its middle or approximately in its middle, on a sole or frame 5, which, as shown in FIG. 2, has two side cheeks 6 and 7 in which are formed circular notches 8 and 9 respectively, exactly affecting the profile of the rear deck trumpet 10.
The cheek 6 is provided with a lug or cleat 11 in which is made a hole 12 in which is engaged a bolt 13 of sufficient length to engage one of the usual fixing eyes of the tie rod 14. The bolt 13 in this case replaces the bolt existing at this location on vehicles of this type * and prevents any oscillating movement of the mount 5 * around the longitudinal axis of the rear axle.
It should be noted that the upper face of the frame 5 is slightly curved so as to match the curvature of the lower leaf of the spring 4.
The spring 4 is fixed to the frame 5 by means of a clamp. such as 15 surrounding the trumpet 10 and whose
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
clamping nuts 16 are supported on a back plate 17, said back plate being retained on the other side of the spring 4 by means of two bolts, the head of which is engaged under the frame 5.
To the frame member 18 are fixed two runners 19, which, as shown more clearly in FIG. 3, are shaped so as to hook the lower wing of the spar, to which each of said runners is fixed by tightening a suitable bolt 20 passing through the folded face 21 of the runner and penetrating into the metal of the runner. spar 18.
It should be noted that the normal hanger of the spring 4 is calculated so that, under normal load of the vehicle, the ends 22 of the master blade lie, as shown in FIG. 1, è. a certain distance from the shoe 19 to allow the normal play of the usual suspension springs.
In the event of an overload, the resulting lowering of the frame will bring the pads 19 into contact with the ends of the master blade 22, which ends can slide freely along the said pads, according to the flexions imparted to the overload spring. 4.
It will be noted that the pads 19 have a substantially vertical projection 23, slightly curved and forming with the horizontal pad 19 a notch 24 in which the master blade (s) 22 will be resiliently retained.
During the vertical oscillations of the frame, the struts 19 will be caused to leave the ends of the master blade; in this case, the vertical projections or cheeks 23 will contribute to ensuring the lateral stability of the frame, because they will remain in contact with the said ends of the spring 4 and will act as a guide for the vertical movements of the frame. In addition, the curved conformation of the cheek 23 will prevent any tendency for the latter to catch on by the master blade during strong vertical oscillations of the frame.
The assembly described above and shown in the drawing
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
applies to a vehicle in which the normal suspension springs are mounted laterally to the side member. In the event that said suspension springs are mounted below the side member, it will be appreciated that the overload springs may as well then be present on one or the other side of the normal suspension spring. effect of giving the pads 19 the necessary conformation so that they are present above the ends of the overload spring.
It is understood that such overload springs could also be mounted on the front axle or in combination with any type of mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic suspension.
