Articulated frame for seats. The present invention relates to an articulated frame intended for the actual seats of so-called "American" rocking chairs or similar furniture, these seats usually being mounted to pivot on a support base.
Hitherto, articulated frames of this kind have generally included coil springs to support the tilting movement of the seat, and various devices have been devised for mounting the springs and adjusting the tension, but in all these devices , the relatively moving metal parts were in contact and subjected to the pressure of the springs, so that during the relative movement there was considerable surface friction which had as a result that the rocking movement was irregular and the parts squeaked and cracked.
In addition, these parts required frequent lubrication, which was not only very inconvenient and tedious, due to the fact that the mechanism was difficult to access and there was a risk of getting your hands and clothes dirty, but presented the in - agree that the lubricated part was liable to collect dust and foreign matter.
The present invention relates to an articulated frame for tilting seats comprising a member which can be inclined relative to its support; this frame is characterized in that between these two members is interposed an articulation member composed of two concentric elements which can rotate with respect to one another around a horizontal axis, one of these elements being rigidly fixed to the tilting member and the other to the support, and of an annular part of elastic material, interposed between these two concentric elements and secured thereto.
Further, the seat frame can be set up to allow the seat to be supported in all directions in a completely free, resilient and. Cushioned using rubber and ensure a smooth and easy suspension.
It establishes a silent seal, which does not deteriorate to an appreciable extent, even after prolonged and intense service, and which does not require lubrication.
It enables the adjustment of the tension desired for the particular needs of the user of the seat to be carried out in an easy and convenient manner.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention are shown.
Fig. 1 is a side view of an articulated frame for tilting and rotating armchairs and chairs; Fig. 2 is a plan view of this frame, with partial cutaway of the bars fixed to the seat itself; Fig. 3 is a front view of the frame, the bars of the seat proper being shown in section on 3-3 (FIG. 1); Fig: 4 is a section on 4-4 (fig. 2); Fig. 5 is a section on 5-5 (fig. 2);
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the applied seal; Fig. 7 is a side view of another embodiment of an articulated frame with partial cut away of the bars fixed to the seat itself; Fig. 8 is a plan view of FIG. 7; Fig. 9 is a front view of the frame, the bars of the seat proper being shown in section on 9-9 (FIG. 7); Fig. 10 is a section on 10-10 (Fig. 11); Fig. 11 is a section on 11-11 (fig. 8);
Fig. 12 is a perspective view of the applied seal.
The articulated seat frame shown in Figs. 1 to 6 comprises two bars of angular cross section 10, 10 of the tines to be fixed by means of screws on the underside of the seat itself, in the usual manner, and mounted to pivot on a console 11 fixed by a locking screw 12 at the upper end of a vertical column 13, the bars 10 being pivotally mounted on the console 11 by means of a joint, one of the elements of which is fixed to the console and another at the seat bars, a resilient rubber support block being arranged between these elements as will be described below in more detail.
The seal comprises two concen trical elements arranged one inside the other, namely: an outer tubular element 14, an internal tubular element 15 and, in addition, a cylindrical block or rubber bush 16 disposed between these elements, this block being strongly compressed and trapped between the elements 14, 15 and being effectively united to their surfaces, so that, during a relative rotational movement between the elements 14 and 15, the rubber is subjected to tor forces if we.
In practice, the rubber block is actually united, for example by vulcanization, to the internal element 15, and the whole is then force-fitted into the external element 14 under considerable pressure. , the diameter which the block has before being introduced into said outer member 14 being much larger than the inner diameter of said member, so that the rubber is highly compressed and effectively unites with the inner surface of said member 14 due to the great surface friction created between these two organs as a result of the compression. In addition, a radial relative displacement between the two elements 14 and 15 is normally prevented due to the strong compression of the rubber bush.
The ends of the rubber protrude beyond the ends of the outer member 14, as indicated at 16a, 16a, and the ends of the inner member 15 protrude beyond the rubber block and are shoulder-flattened and flattened. so as to consti kill assembly tenons 17, 17 serving to lock this internal element to the bars 10 of the seat.
To this end, the bars 10 each have an opening 18 and notches 19, 19 extending outwardly and intended to receive the tenons 17, a tie rod 20 being inserted through the bore of the element 15 and through the openings 18 by its threaded ends, which are provided with fixing nuts 21, 21 the assembly rigidly connecting the bars 10 of the seat to the internal element 15 and constituting a support member and spacer- ment between these bars.
The Il. console is provided with a stirrup-shaped part 22 which extends forwards and of which the transverse element or sound bar 23 terminates the console at the front. and constitutes a support on which the upper parts of the bars 10 rest in the normal or non-reclined position of the seat. The pivot axis of the joint is disposed within the yoke portion located in front of the vertical pivot axis of the column 13, and the upper surface of the console tapers towards the rear and downwards, as indicated at 24, to constitute a stop li mit the tilting movement, as represented by dashed lines in fig. 5.
The bracket 22 of the console 11 has on each side a cylindrical support opening 25 receiving the corresponding end of the external joint element 14 for the purpose of an angular adjustment movement, as will be seen below more in detail. In the space between the sides of the caliper is arranged a tension regulating lever 26 which projects below the transverse element 23 of the caliper and is provided with a hub 27 surrounding the intermediate part of the caliper. the outer seal element 14, part to which it is fixed by a locking screw 28, the element 14 having a hole 29 in which the end of the locking screw 28 is engaged like a lock . An adjusting screw 30, fitted with a handwheel 31 at its end,
is screwed into a threaded opening 32 of the end of the lever 26 and bears by its upper end on the undersurface of the transverse element 23.
It is evident that when the screw 30 is actuated, the outer seal member 14 rotates relative to the bracket 11 and the inner seal member 15 and, through the torsional forces imparted to the rubber. 16, all desired deformations and initial tensions can be created in this rubber, the magnitude of the torque required to lower the seat being all the greater as this initial tension is higher and the variation of this torque being appreciably pro proportional to the variation of this voltage.
This initial deformation and tension created in the elastic sleeve exerts a force directed advantageously in the opposite direction to the tilting movement of the seat when the latter is pressed rearward, so that this force normally urges the seat forward. to bring the bars 10 into engagement with the cross member 23. As the seat pivots rearward, the deformation and tension are increased and the seat returns to its normal position against the member 23 when the pressure is pressed. straining the seat backwards is removed.
The column 13 passes through the support base 33 of the chair and is mounted so as to pivot and move vertically relative to this base. t1 this effect, the column is free to move vertically through a tie collar 34 provided on this column and in a rear part of which is pivotally assembled a vertical adjustment screw 35 fixed by a key 36, this screw, which carries a handwheel 37 fixed to said screw above the collar, screwing into a vertical threaded hole 38 of the console 11.
The collar 34 is provided with a cap-shaped casing 39 resting on the upper end with rim 40 of a tubular sleeve 41 fixed in the base of the chair, the collar being able to rotate freely on a support washer 42 interposed between the rim and the monkfish. A retaining screw 43 passing through the wall of the cap engages by its internal end below the rim 40 and prevents the vertical displacement of the collar and of the column while allowing these two members to pivot freely. compared to each other.
By rotating the screw 35, the height of the seat and the parts attached to it are adjusted relative to the collar 34 and the base 33 of the chair.
The articulated seat frame shown provides free and elastic support for the seat by the interposition of a block of compressed rubber 16 between the external 14 and internal 15 seal elements and by the arrangement of the ends 1.6a of said block between the sides. bars attached to the seat itself and to the outer member 14, so that when sitting down there is a feeling of marked elastic suspension. When tilting the seat, the tension generated in the rubber prevents abrupt or violent movement to the limit position, while allowing easy tilting movement.
As the device does not require any grease, it remains in perfect working order indefinitely without requiring maintenance. It has been found that the highly compressed rubber does not deteriorate even after very long and intense service, and since only the end surfaces 16a, 16a are exposed to air or moisture, deterioration due to these elements is negligible.
Figs. 7 to 12 show another embodiment in which the tension adjustment is effected by the rotation of the outer seal element with respect to the bars fixed to the seat itself, instead of being effected with respect to the non-swiveling support bracket as in the first construction.
The bars 50, 50 fixed to the seat are raised on a spacer member comprising a transverse upper part 51 and wings 52, 52, extending downwards. The console 53, which is fixed by means of a locking screw 12 to the column 13 in the same way as in the previous construction, has a cylindrical hole 54 intended to receive the seal and is provided, at its front end, of a rib 55 against which the spacer band comes to rest via its underside in the non-tilted position of the chair.
The upper part of the console has a surface 56 inclined rearwardly and downwardly and disposed tangentially with respect to the pivoting arc of the spacer member, this surface being intended to limit the pivoting movement. ment by the meeting of said member with this inclined surface, as represented by phantom lines in FIG. 11.
The seal is broadly identical to that of the first embodiment, this seal comprising a ferrule or external cylindrical element 57, a stud or internal cylindrical element 58 and a rubber bush 59 whose ends 59a, 59a are extended beyond the ferrule, the stud 58 itself being extended beyond the sleeve. The ferrule 57 is fixed in the hole 54 of the bracket 53 by a locking screw 60. The ends of the stud 58 are provided with tapered square protrusions and provided with shoulders, as indicated at 61, 61 near the ends of the collar. the rubber bush, and the ends of which are cylindrical and provided with shoulders, as indicated in 62, 62.
The ends 62, 62 of the stud are assembled so as to be able to be angularly adjusted in support notches 63, 63 made on the corresponding sides of the wings 52 of the spacer member, said ends being retained in said ends. sizes by crushing the metal at the edges of these notches, in front of said ends, as indicated at 64.
The square parts 61, 61 of the stud are engaged in rectangular notches 65, 65 provided at the inner ends of the sides 66, 66 of a tension regulating yoke, said parts being retained in this position by the crushing of the metal at the ends. edges of the notches, behind said square parts, as indicated at 67.
The front transverse bar 68 of the caliper is provided on its upper edge with an elbow or wing 69 which extends inwardly and has an opening 70 through which passes the rod of an adjusting screw 71 of which the upper end passes through an opening 7 2 made in the upper part 51 of the spacer member and is pivotally assembled with this member by virtue of a transverse pin 73 housed in a recess 74 made in said upper part. , on each side of the opening 72. On the lower threaded end of the screw 71 is screwed a control wheel 75 resting on a spacer sleeve 76 surrounding the screw between the steering wheel and the wing 69.
The adjustment is made by rotating the handwheel, which makes the caliper pivot relative to the spacer organ, the pin 58 of the joint thus receiving a rotational movement suitable for creating the torsional force. initial desired in the rubber bush 59 housed between the stud 58 and the ferrule 57.
The pivoting mounting of the column 13 and the vertical adjuster are the same as in the first construction, so it is not necessary to describe them in more detail.
