Abstract

A safety stirrup detachably connected to the stirrup-leather in order to release the rider's foot in the event of a fall comprises a coupling device having two jaws for clamping the top portion of the stirrup head. A forward pivotal displacement of the stirrup with respect to the stirrup-leather causes rotation of a cam provided at the upper end of the stirrup head. The two jaws are opened-out by a top wedge of the cam through an angle of approximately 30 DEG to 45 DEG while a bottom wedge of the cam increases the separation of the jaws, thus releasing the stirrup.

Description

The present invention relates to a safety stirrup intended for riding, that is to say a stirrup capable of detaching the corresponding stirrup to ensure the release of the rider's foot in the event of the latter falling. In fact, with stirrups of the conventional type, the foot then risks being trapped in the corresponding stirrup, which risks causing a serious accident for the rider.

Various safety systems have already been proposed for ensuring the release of a rider's feet during a fall. However, the systems currently in existence do not make it possible to solve this problem in a fully satisfactory manner.

Thus, the patent FR 403.632 describes a stirrup whose head is attached to the corresponding stirrup by means of a support capable of allowing the release of this stirrup in certain circumstances. This support takes the form of an arch, the branches of which are arranged in planes extending at right angles to the general plane of the stirrup. At their lower end, the two branches of this hoop have a projection engaged in a cavity formed on the corresponding side of a protuberance provided on the top of the head of this stirrup. The release of the stirrup therefore supposes that the fall of the rider causes a rotation of the protuberance of the head of the stirrup between the two branches of the arch-shaped support, so that the projections thereof are released outside the cavities of this protuberance. However, since the two branches of the arch-shaped support are arranged in planes extending at right angles to the general plane of the stirrup, there is rather a rotation of the stirrup support inside of the loop formed by the stirrup, or even a twist of this stirrup. However, in one case as in the other, there is no release of the head of the stirrup relative to its support, since such release necessarily requires a rotation of the upper protuberance of the head of the bracket between the two branches of its support.

As for GB 753 418, it describes a safety stirrup system in which the head of the stirrup is attached to the corresponding stirrup by means of a coupling device comprising an elastic blade holding the head of the stirrup resting on a retaining tab engaged in the eye of this head, while allowing its release in the event of an abnormal pivoting effort of the stirrup. Again this solution is imperfect because there is a large clearance of movement of the head of the caliper on the retaining tab and this game facilitates an untimely release of the caliper relative to its coupling device. Furthermore, the system thus provided does not allow the release of the stirrup under precise release conditions for a determined torsional force. On the other hand, this system does not have sufficient robustness because the elastic blade ensuring the retention in place of the stirrup is very quickly damaged.

This is why the aim of the present invention is to produce a stirrup making it possible to obtain optimum security for the release of the foot in the event of the rider falling and for a determined torsional force, this device also being designed so as to be extremely robust.

To this end, the subject of the invention is a safety stirrup for riding, the head of which is attached to the corresponding stirrup by means of an elastic clamp, the two jaws of which enclose the upper part of the head of this stirrup having retaining elements engaged in an eye of this head, characterized in that the upper part of the head of this stirrup assumes the shape of a cam having two plane faces parallel to the general plane of the stirrup and against which normally applies the two jaws of the coupling clamp, the shape of this cam allowing it to cause a start of separation of these two jaws in case of rotation of this cam on itself, and in this that the jaw of the coupling clamp, which is intended to be placed towards the rear, extends downwards by a tab arranged opposite the lower part of the head of the stirrup, to constitute a stop s' opposing the pivoting of the wormhole s rear.

Thus, the release of the foot can only occur in the event of relative pivoting of the stirrup forwards relative to the corresponding stirrup, therefore in the event of an abnormal force due to the fall of the rider.

However, other particularities and advantages of the safety stirrup according to the invention will appear during the following description of a few embodiments of it. This description is given with reference to the attached drawing for information only, and in which:
  • Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a first embodiment of the safety stirrup according to the invention and its coupling device with the corresponding stirrup;

  • Figures 7 and 8 are partial sectional views similar to Figure 2, but showing various other embodiments of the safety stirrup according to the invention.

This consists of a clamp elastic, the two jaws 4 and 5 of which are arranged in two planes substantially parallel to the general plane XY of the stirrup. These two jaws trap between them the upper part 6 of the head 7 of the stirrup, that is to say the part of this head which is located above the eye 8 thereof.

At their lower end, these two jaws carry, on their opposite face, spoilers 9 which are engaged inside the eye 8 of the head of the stirrup. Thus, these spoilers serve as retaining elements for the upper part 6 of this head.

The two jaws 4 and 5 are carried by two elastic blades 10, the upper ends of which are secured to one another, for example by welding points 11 or rivets. In addition, the upper ends of these two blades have an opening 12 inside which is engaged the corresponding stirrup 2. Thus, the two elastic blades 10 constitute elastic means tending to hold the two jaws 4 and 5 towards each other in order to couple the stirrup 1 with the stirrup 2.

The upper part 6 of the head of this stirrup is constituted by a cam whose profile is such that it is capable of causing the start of separation of the two retaining jaws 4 and 5 in the event of rotation of this cam on it - even up to an angle of about 30 to 45 ° approximately. In addition, this cam has, at its lower part, a wedge 13 which is intended to engage between the spoilers 9 of the two retaining jaws after such rotation of the cam 6 in order to increase the spacing of these jaws for allow the caliper head to escape.

For this purpose, apart from an upper rib 14 whose role will be explained later, the cam 6 has a cross section of square or rectangular shape. Thus, it has a lower face 15, flat and horizontal, which serves as a bearing surface on the two spoilers 9 for retaining the two jaws 4 and 5. However, it also has two faces 16 perpendicular to this bearing surface and which extend in planes parallel to the general XY plane of the stirrup. However, the two jaws 4 and 5 are normally applied against these two flat faces, which ensures that the stirrup is held firmly in the position shown in FIG. 2, and this without any possibility of play with respect to its device d 'coupling with the corresponding stirrup.

As already indicated, the cam 6 thus formed carries on the top a rib 14. The latter has a cross section of triangular shape, the edge of which is directed upwards. This rib is in fact intended to constitute in a way a corner allowing an easy repositioning of the cam 6 between the two retaining jaws 4 and 5. In combination with this corner, the lower faces of the two retaining spoilers 9 have chamfers 17 intended to facilitate the engagement of this corner between the two spoilers, in order to cause the temporary separation of the two retaining jaws 4 and 5 during the re-engagement of the cam 6 between these two jaws (see FIG. 6).

According to another important characteristic, the retaining jaw 5, which is intended to be placed towards the rear, is extended downwards by a lug 18 disposed facing the lower part 19 of the head of the stirrup, this that is to say its part located below its eye 8. Preferably, this tab is normally engaged inside a recess 20 formed in this lower part 19. Thus, this tab constitutes a stop opposing any possibility of pivoting of the stirrup towards the rear relative to its coupling device 3.

Consequently, there can only occur, between the stirrup and its coupling device, a relative pivoting movement of the stirrup forwards as shown in FIG. 3. More precisely, during a fall from the rider to the rear, there is a relative pivoting movement of the stirrup 1 forwards according to arrow F1, while the stirrup stirrup and the coupling device 3, carried by the latter, are located raised backwards.

Thus, the cam 6 is caused to rotate on itself between the two jaws 4 and 5 to an angle of rotation of the order of 30 to 45 ° . This therefore causes the spacing of the two jaws 4 and 5 to begin as shown in FIG. 3. At the end of this rotational movement, the lower corner 13 of the cam 6, which is situated towards the rear, is disposed opposite the gap existing at this time between the two retaining spoilers 9 due to the start of the spacing of the two jaws 4 and 5. Due to the tensile force exerted by the stirrup 2, the wedge 13 engages between the two retaining spoilers 9 and thus causes a more accentuated increase in the spacing of the two jaws 4 and 5, which ultimately allows the escape of the caliper head (see FIG. 4).

Under these conditions, the stirrup is released under conditions capable of ensuring maximum safety. However, during a normal riding course, this stirrup is perfectly maintained without any play in its coupling device with the stirrup, and this thanks to the fact that the two retaining jaws 4 and 5 are applied elastically against the flat faces 16 of the cam 6 of the head of the stirrup. Furthermore, by reason of the design of the present device, any abnormal torsional force on the foot, resulting from the beginning of a fall of the rider backward, automatically causes, and absolutely absolutely, the rotation of the cam 6 between the two retaining jaws and consequently, the clearance of the caliper head relative to the two retaining jaws. On this subject, it is essential that these jaws are arranged in planes parallel to the general plane XY of the stirrup and that the rotation of the cam 6 causes a start of separation of these two jaws, which is followed by a separation more accentuated due to the engagement of the lower corner 13 between the two retaining spoilers 9. Furthermore, FIG. 5 illustrates the practical conditions for releasing the stirrup.

The essential difference of this one compared to the previous one lies in the nature of the elastic means ensuring the maintenance of the two retaining jaws towards one another.

Indeed, in this embodiment both corresponding jaws 4a and 5a are articulated, at their upper end, around a common axis 21 formed by the lower branch of a ring 22 inside which is engaged the corresponding stirrup 2a. Maintaining the two jaws 4a towards each other is then ensured by a torsion spring 23 disposed around the axis 21. But, apart from this difference, the general structure of the present device is the same as before. Consequently, the operation is also the same.

Un écrou 28 vissé sur l'extrémité de cette vis permet alors de régler à volonté la pression élastique de rappel des deux mâchoires 4b et 5b.FIG. 8 represents yet another embodiment which differs from the previous ones by the nature of the elastic means acting on the two retaining jaws. In this case, the two corresponding jaws 4a and 5b are carried by two rigid tabs 24 which are articulated around a common axis 25. The elastic means tending to bias the two jaws against each other, are constituted by a pressure spring 26 disposed around a screw 27 carried by one of the tabs 24 and which passes through the other. A nut 28 screwed onto the end of this screw then makes it possible to adjust the elastic return pressure of the two jaws 4b and 5b as desired.

But here again, apart from this difference, the arrangement of the two jaws is the same as in the first embodiment. The cam 6 carried by the head of the stirrup is also identical to that provided in this first embodiment. Consequently, the operation is the same.

However, the safety stirrup according to the invention is not limited to the few examples which have been described above, for information only. Thus, the elastic return means of the two retaining jaws could be other than those envisaged previously. Optionally, these elastic return means could consist of a rubber block or pad, or other suitable elastic material.
