<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La figure 1 est une vue combinée de côté et en coupe longi- tudinale d'une arme à feu conforme à l'invention; la figure 3 est une vue analogue à la figure 1, mais montre les parties wtives dans des positions relatives différentes; la figure 3 est une vue en plan du mécanisme représenté par la figure l,dans l'hypothèse où la platine de l'arme est enlevée; la figure 4 est une coupe transversale partielle,à. échelle plus grande,pratiquée suivant la ligne 4-4 de la figure 1;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Firearms Improvements".
The present invention relates, in general, to firearms of the type provided with a breech bolt which moves rearward during recoil, independently of the barrel and provided with members for bringing the bolt forward. , after the reoul.
It refers more specifically to automatic firearms of the type described by Belgian patents 276856 and English 219932, but it is not, of course, limited to these.
In an automatic firearm of the preceding type, the cartridges are fed automatically into the weapon, by a flexible hole for example, and if firing is stopped before the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
stock of cartridges is exhausted, a free cartridge remains in the firing chamber of the barrel. When the gun has been operating continuously for a substantial period of time, the barrel may be very hot, especially if the gun is not equipped with a liquid cooler.
The heat of the barrel is transmitted to the cartridge which is in the firing chamber; this may result in the cartridge exploding and unexpectedly delayed firing of the firearm. It is obvious that a delayed shot of this kind is very dangerous.
The main objective of the present invention is to achieve. ser a firearm of the type referred to above, the breech bolt of which is automatically maintained in its rear position during recoil; a more special object of the invention is to provide an automatic firearm of the type in question firstly of which the breech bolt is automatically maintained in its rear position when firing is ceased.
On the basis of the above objectives, the invention consists, in general terms, in providing a firearm comprising a firing mechanism which can be operated by hand, a breech bolt which moves backwards when the fire occurs. recoil, separate from the barrel, members for bringing the bolt forward after the recoil, a cartridge feed mechanism and members entirely independent of the supply mechanism and growing therefrom, to maintain the bolt cylinder head automatically in its rear position.
The invention consists, more specifically, of an automatic firearm comprising, in combination, a breech bolt which moves backwards during the recoil, separately from the barrel, organs to bring the bolt forward after the recoil. recoil, a cartridge feed mechanism, a firing mechanism comprising:
manually operable part on the cylinder head which, when. it is in the operating position, can cause firing,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
at the end of each forward movement of the breech lock, members which automatically maintain the breech lock in its rear position and a device that can be operated by hand to keep the stop member in the inactive position.
To make the invention clearly understood and to enable it to be carried out easily, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings which show it, by way of example and of which:
Figure 1 is a combined side view and in longitudinal section of a firearm according to the invention; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, but shows the active parts in different relative positions; FIG. 3 is a plan view of the mechanism represented by FIG. 1, assuming that the gun plate is removed; Figure 4 is a partial cross section through. larger scale, taken along line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a partial cross section, on a larger scale, taken along line 5-5 of Figure 1.
In the drawings, the reference 1 designates, as a whole, the breech or main sheath of the weapon, the cross section of which is generally rectangular. From the front end of the breech 1 leaves a cylindrical sleeve. 2, which surrounds a barrel 3 at the rear end of which is provided a firing chamber 4. In the breech is a breech lock 5, which is maintained in locking relation with the barrel at the time of firing, but which is movable towards the rear, independently of the barrel, as a result of the action of the recoil. A stop 6 is provided to limit the rearward movement of the lock. Following the recoil, the bolt of the breech is brought forward by an appropriate member such as a spring 7.
The cartridges are introduced into 1 weapon by a flexible belt, which crosses a supply channel 8, provided at the front part of the breech 1; the lock 5 carries an extrac-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
turn 9, which is used to remove a cartridge from the belt with each backward movement of the bolt lock. Figure 2 shows a cartridge C in the position it occupies when the breech lock and the extractor are in their rear positions. It will be understood that when the bolt and the extractor move forward again, the cartridge 0 is introduced into the firing chamber 4.
The mechanism of the firearm, used to effect and control the movements of the bolt of the breech, of the extractor and of the other parts, is not shown in detail; this mechanism, in fact, does not constitute part of the invention; it is or it may be analogous to those which have been represented in the patent submissions referred to above.
The bolt of the breech 5 carries a striker 10 tooth the rear part is shown in Figure 1. This striker is engaged by a trigger 11 movable transversely, which is held in engagement with the striker by a spring 12.
A pivoting hammer It is used to move the striker backwards during the backward movement of the bolt of the breech. On the breech is mounted a trigger bar 14 arranged so as to engage the trigger 11 when the latch and the trigger are in their previous position.
The inventor does not wish to be limited by the construction of the trigger bar 14 shown; however, he prefers to use a trigger bar, and he has shown a trigger bar, pivoting horizontally at an intermediate point, such as point 15, while the front end of this bar is arranged and shaped. so as to engage the trigger, as explained previously. The rear end of the trigger bar 14 is arranged to be engaged by a portion extending forward of a pivoting trigger 16.
It will be noted that, when the trigger 16 is pushed downwards, its anterior extension has moved upwards, which makes the bar 14- turn clockwise.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of a watch, and thus folds the trigger 11 and loosens the perforator 10. A stopper 17 limits the movement of the trigger bar.
It will be understood that when it is desired to fire a salvo, that is to say a certain number of shots in rapid succession, the trigger 16 is pushed and it is kept lowered, which maintains the front end of the trigger bar. 14 in its lower position as well as in the path of the upper part of the trigger. The trigger bar is provided with a cam surface I4a, which serves to lower the trigger when the latch advances; the dimensions of these parts are calculated so that the trigger leaves the firing pin exactly when desired.
When the shot occurs, the bolt moves backwards again to perform the various operations which have been described; when returning forward, firing begins again. These operations are repeated automatically as long as the trigger is kept lowered and the supply of cartridges continues.,
On the casing of the breech and near its rear part is mounted a locking element 18, which engages the lock of the breech to hold it in its rear position as shown in figure 2. This element lock. their or stopper element is preferably a pivoting pawl, which carries a horizontal and transverse pivoting support at point 19.
In the latch 5 is provided a notch 20, in which the pawl 18 can engage in order to hold the bolt of the cylinder head. The pawl 18 is placed automatically in the notch 20 by the effect / of gravity; however, it will be understood that the in can add an emergency spring to it if necessary. It is clear that if the pawl is left to act normally, it will engage in the latch and hold it each time the latter is brought to its rear position.
The oliquet 18 is preferably relatively wide, so as to engage a good distance with the latch and there is
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
provided a central notch 21 through which passes the trigger bar 14. The upper edge 'of the rear part of the trigger bar engages the pawl 18 and the lower edge of the trigger bar engages with a protrusion transverse 22 provided on the pawl. It will be noted that the trigger bar itself as well as the trigger 16 constitute manually adjustable members serving to move the locking element, so as to release the bolt from the breech.
It is clear that the movement of the trigger and the trigger bar serves to move the pawl 18 and thus to release the bolt of the breech. and that this same movement serves to bring the anterior end of the trigger bar into position to lower the trigger and release the firing pin, so as to fire.
As a result of this automatic operation of the firearm, firing continues as long as the trigger 16 is lowered; it is in fact evident that in this case the trigger bar continues to maintain the pawl 18 in its upper position, which is the inactive position. It is then clear that when the trigger is released, the pawl 18 engages the bolt of the breech during its next backward movement and that it maintains it in this rear position, as shown in FIG. therefore, the cartridge C is kept outside the firing chamber 4, as already explained.
It is preferable that the pivot axis 19 of the pawl 18 instead of being fixed on the cylinder head is movable relative to the latter * The pawl is assembled to pivot with the rear part of a horizontal rod 23 movable in the direction longitudinal in a sheath 24 fixed to the cylinder head. A spring 25 surrounds the rod 23 and biases it in its rear position; this spring therefore constitutes one of the elements of the member, which serves to maintain the bolt of the cylinder head. The spring 25 serves to absorb the shock which occurs when the bolt of the cylinder head
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in engagement with the stop 6; it therefore eliminates the shock and vibration that would occur if the pivot connection of the pawl 18 were fixed and rigid.
The sheath 24, which carries the rod 23 is fixed in the upper right corner of the cylinder head by rivets 26,26; a flat head stud 27 may also be provided which sits in part in a shallow cylindrical hole in the sleeve 24 and in a similar hole made in the upper wall of the cylinder head.
