<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to the manufacture of bricks by compressing a mass of earth in a mold.
According to the invention, the piston which compresses the earth is controlled by a connecting rod driven by a crank pin which rotates about an axis; the crankpin first drives the connecting rod in the direction of compression, then it passes the point

dead and begins to descend; when it has exceeded the dead center by a small amount, the earth is decompressed and we take the opportunity to release the lock which holds the cover of the mold. Then a second rotating crank pin meets it.
@ connecting rod at an intermediate point of the length and pulling it
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
again in the same direction as at the beginning; as the cover lock is released the brick is no longer compressed but is lifted quickly out of the mold. Preferably, the control is obtained by means of two crankpins mounted on the same rotating member, these crankpins being wedged at less than 180 degrees from each other; a good arrangement consists in wedging them at approximately 135. It is interesting to mount the crankpins on two coaxial parallel plates.
The connecting rod must be deformable in order to be able to bend when it is attacked by the second crank pin; Preferably, it will include a first rigid part attached to the main crankpin and this part will have. a length greater than twice the distance from the main crankpin to the axis of rotation; in this way there is a very rapid lifting movement when the second crankpin comes to attack the connecting rod.
By way of example, in order to facilitate understanding of the description, the appended drawing shows:
Figure 1, a schematic elevational view of a pressing apparatus.
Figure 2, a section along the line II-II of Figure 1.
Figure 3, a partial view showing the position of the plate and the connecting rod at the time of unlocking.
Figure 4, a view similar to l. Figure 3, showing the position of the organs during the ejection of the brick.
Figure 5, a diagram representing the movement of the piston as a function of time /
The apparatus shown comprises a mold 1 in which a piston 2 moves. The upper part of the mold is closed by a cover 3 which penetrates into the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
mold; this cover is lying on the underside of a lever 4 pivoting about the axis 5. In the position of the figure, the cover is applied to the mold and it is held in this position by a lock 6; The bolt is made up of an artiealé 7-shaped bracket, which covers the extract of the lever 4.
To control the piston 2, a connecting rod 8 is provided at its base which rests on a lever or rocker 9 articulated in the. The balance ect actuated by means of the device described below.
Two parallel plates II, 12 are mounted respectively on side journals 13, 14. Canes 15, 16 are fixed on these plates as spacers; crankpin 15 is cylindrical while crankpin 16 has a square section. The rays passing through these crimps form an angle of 135 degrees between them. The crank pin 15 is connected to the balance 9 by an oielle formed by two rigid parts 17, 18 joined by a joint 19.
In the example shown? each part is formed by two rods, the ends of which are suitably curved,
The earth 20 is first placed in the mold 1, then the cover 3 is folded down and it is fixed in this position by bringing the latch 6 onto the end of the lever 4.
We are then in the position shown in Figure 1.
The plates 11, 12 are then rotated in the direction of the arrow 21. The crankpin 15 rises and through the intermediary of the connecting rod 17, 18 and the balance 20, it pre- vents the compression of the earth. under the action. piston 2. It should be noted that the compressive force is gradually increasing until the crankpin 15
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
reaches the top dead center, that is to say the point for which the geometric axis of the connecting rod passes through the geometric axis of rotation of the plates; a considerable compression force is thus obtained with a relatively low driving force.
In FIG. 5, the times have been plotted on the abscissa (following 0-22), and on the ordinate (following 0-23) the displacements of piston 2. The movement which has just been described is represented by curve 0 -24, point 24 corresponding to top dead center.
The crankpin 15 contained its rotation and consequently the piston 2 descends slightly along the curve 24-25.
This results in decompression and we take the opportunity to release the latch 6 when we reach point 25; it suffices for this to pull the latch 6 to the left of FIG. 1 and this is easy since the earth 20 is no longer pressed against the cover 3.
On the other hand, at this moment (point 25) the organs are in the position of FIG. 3; it can be seen that the crank pin 16 has come into contact with part 17 of the connecting rod while rotating, the rotational movement continues and consequently the crank pin 16 drives part 17 by bending the connecting rod as shown in FIG. 4 . Everything therefore takes place as if the balance 9 were driven by a shorter connecting rod 18 attached to a crank pin 19 which rotates around the journals 13, 14.
Now, part 17 has a length greater than twice the distance of maneten 15 from the center of rotation; as a result, the new crankpin 19 is further from the center than the crankpin 15 and the pendulum 9 is driven with a greater speed than before; the displacement of the piston is then represented by the curve portion 25-26. Under the action of the piston 1a, the finished brick is then lifted out of the mold so that it can be grasped by the worker.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Then, the machine is disengaged and the plates turn in the opposite direction so that the strake returns to its starting position by following curve 26-27. it can be seen that during each pressing operation, the plateaux 11, 12 always turn in the same direction of a cuntinu movement.
It is clear to those skilled in the art that the various clutch and locking maneuvers can be carried out automatically by all known devices.
1- Bricks manufacturing process with the mayen of a piston which compresses the earth in a mold, according to which. One moves the piston in order to compress the earth, then one moves it a small quantity in the opposite direction and the the lock which retains the mold cover is released.
then finally we move the piston in the same direction as at the beginning, But with a greater speed, so that the brick is pushed quickly out of the mold
2- Apparatus for the manufacture of bricks comprising a mold, a piston moving in the mold, a connecting rod controlling the piston, which connecting rod is deformable, two rotating crank pins, one of them acting at the end of the connecting rod , and the other acting at an intermediate point of the connecting rod when this connecting rod has completed its path corresponding to the compression of the earth.
