<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Sickbed.
Patented in its favor in France on October 21, 1929 under c 683, 589. The invention relates to a patient bed comprising a device enabling the patient to meet his needs, this device comprising a cushion which fits into a recess. practiced in the mattress below the seat and which forms one of the bottoms of a tiltable suspended organ, while in order to do one's needs, after having released the cushion, lift from bottom to top in position of use a basin suspended in stable equilibrium at the other end of the suspended organ. When changing the position of use, the suspended member is released from the recess in the mattress by lowering it, tilting it 180 and lifting it again.
Compared to known devices, the essential characteristic of the invention lies in that the different movements performed by the suspended member to change the positions of use suck each other automatically and in an imperative order when a source of power is switched on. any energy. To invert, therefore, the positions of the cushion and the pelvis, it is only necessary that the source of

this motor which operates the device is switched on from the bed, which the patient can conveniently operate with an appropriate arrangement of the trigger mechanism.
An embodiment of the object of the invention has been shown in the drawing, given by way of example.
In this drawing:

Fig. 6 shows on a larger scale the front view of the motor mechanism.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section taken on line VII-VII, the obturator cushion being placed in the recess of the mattress.
Fig. 8 is a similar longitudinal section while rotating the suspended member and
Fig. 9 is a similar longitudinal section with the pelvis raised to its position of use.
The metal base 1 and the mattress 2 of the bed 3 have a recess for accommodating the suspended member 4, tilting and substantially supported in equilibrium, one of the bottoms of which forms the cushion 5 while the basin 6 is suspended in equilibrium. stable at the opposite end.
On the longitudinal sides of the bed are fixed the sheet metal flanges 7 and 7a to which the frame 8 is fixed in corners, on which the vertical sheets 9 and 10 are in turn supported. The latter, in community with the flange 7-carry the transverse shaft 14 actuated by the control motor 11 by means of a worm transmission 12 and 13; on this shaft is mounted the notched disc

or cam 15 with the toothed segment 16 disposed opposite the notch. The shaft 14 carries inwards a crank 17 on the crank pin of which the connecting rod 19 is articulated. The raising and lowering of the frame which supports the suspended organ 4 are produced by the connecting rod 19 as a function of the displacement of the rod. crankpin. The motor 11 is mounted on the base plate 20 of the frame 8.
The flange 7a and the sheets 9 and 10 carry a second transverse shaft, on which is wedged the gear wheel 22 driven by the toothed segment 16 as well as the chain wheel 23 which transmits via the endless chain 24 the rotational movement of the shaft 21 to the chain wheel 25 fixed on the pivot axis of the suspended member 4.
The member 4 is suspended from a frame tilting around the shaft 21 and formed by the two supporting levers with two arms 26 and the cross members 27, 28. The cross member 28 carries a counterweight 29 which balances the suspended member 4 on the free side of the frame opposite, in other words the resulting torque. Between the supporting levers 26 is mounted on the shaft 21 the single-arm lever 30 which is made integral with it and on which is articulated the connecting rod 19 of the cranks 17,18 while at its free end is connected an adjusting screw 32 subjected to the action of the spring 31 and whose head rests on the cross member 27. The screw 32 thus forms a rigid connection between the frame and the lever 30.
By unscrewing or screwing the nuts 33, it is possible to adjust the height position of the frame and with it the location of the suspended member 4 in the recess of the mattress.
On one of the sides of the bed 3 is disposed, between two stops 36 and 37, the control lever 35 with two arms, subjected to the tension of the spring 34. The rod 38 articulated on the lever 35 ends in a free lever 40, bearing a pawl 39 and rotating the control shaft 42 which carries a ratchet wheel 41. By bringing the lever 35 against the stop 37, we
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
turns the control shaft 42 by 90 in the opposite direction to that of clockwise which has the effect of establishing contact and starting up the motor 11. The lever 35 returns automatically under the action of the spring 34 in its first position determined by the stop 36.
On the control shaft 42 is mounted the disengaging lever 43 with equal arms, which is controlled by the crank pin 44 of the connecting rod 45 mounted on the shaft 14, so that after each complete rotation of the shaft 14 turning clockwise, it takes the position shown in fig. 6. This is caused by the fact that when moving the control lever 35, the release lever 43, which rotates with the shaft 14 of 90 in the counterclockwise direction, is driven to. turn 90 again in the same direction during the last part of the rotation of the shaft 14, by the crank pin 44, which has the effect of cutting off the ignition and bringing the engine to a stop.
The gear 22 has on one side two disc segments 46 diametrically opposed to each other which have a shape corresponding to the curvature of the outer edge of the scalloped disc 15 so that the segments 46 rest alternately. after each half-turn of the shaft 21 on the prominence of the disc 15, so that it is impossible for the shaft 21 to turn any further when these segments are in engagement with the disc 15-
The operation is as follows:
To change the position of organ 4, the patient pulls the control lever 35 to the stop 37 and then releases the handle. The source of motive force (motor 11) is thus switched on and the disc 15 completes a full clockwise revolution.
Its movement being completed, the source of motive force is disconnected as a result of the quarter turn imperatively performed by the control shaft 42 as explained above, so that the motor 11 s' stopped.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The disc 15 assumes the position shown. fig.6 for each position of use of the member 4. During the first third or so of the rotation of the disc 15, the crank pin 18 pivots downwards which has the effect of lowering the pivoting frame 26, 27, 28 and derail. the suspended member 4 of the opening in the mattress. In about the second third of the rotation of disc 15, toothed segment 16 engages gear 22. The transmission ratio is chosen such that segment 16 rotates wheel 22 by 180 so that pinions 23, 25 being coupled together, the suspended member 4 is itself driven imperatively to rotate 180 in the opposite direction to that of clockwise.
In fig. 8 the member 4 is shown having already completed a complete U-turn. as the disc 15 is notched Lur the edge plumb with the toothed segment 16, there can be no contact with the segments 46 and nothing opposes the 180 rotation of the gear. In about the third third of the rotation of the disc 15, the crankpin 18 again pivots upwards and lifts the frame which again drives the member 4 into the position of use. in the meantime, the outer edge of disc 15 has again become lodged in adjacent segment 46, preventing wheel 22 from turning any further.
If the patient wishes to restore the organ 4 to its initial position, he again draws the control lever 35 and the succession of operations is repeated in the manner described.
