<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Le mode de fonctionnement du dispositif décrit ci-dessus est le suivant :Le bois de séparation 51; se déplaçant graduel- lement vers l'arrière,vient finalement rencontrer le doigt 49 (fig.I);qui fait saillie dans le trajet de cette pièce en bois en passant à travers l'entaille de la cornière de gauche;ce bois de séparation repousse ainsi le doigt 49,jusqu'à ce qu'il vienne se placer au-dessus de la partie élargie arrière 73 de cette entaille et puisse ensuite tomber à travers celle-ci sous l'action de son propre poids.En même temps;
31 avec leurs accessoires.Le bois de séparation est ainsi ame- né;des deux cotés,en s'engageant avec les nez arrière des leviers 34,35.Aussitôt que le levier 18,avec le doigt 49;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Les figs.8 à II montrent,également de façon schématique, comment la séparation des différents livres peut avoir lieu sans l'utilisation de bois séparateurs. Un couteau 53,guidé devant les aiguilles,transversalement au dessus de la machine, dans une glissière 52;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
-tre eux.

method of separating books, sewn together, in book sewing machines by means of vegetable thread "by means of the machine, separating books, sewn together
Up to now, we cut by hand, with the help of a knife, each strip of the back and each wire separately; the knife was guided by hand, - possibly, in the case of the insertion of the woods. separation between the different notebooks, in a guide groove and separated the books. The separation of the books was always done behind the machine. By inserting the separation woods, the material constituting the spine ( ribbons, canvas) protruded regularly.
In another case, after cutting the threads, the last book was pulled out to the desired distance from the end of the ribbons, which hung behind the book for a certain length and then these ribbons were cut. , or else we brought inwards, between two sewn books, the material constituting the back in the form of a loop, folded towards the case, and we cut

This deletion of the link between the books, pf , r the cutting of the threads and of the material constituting the back ;;, took place by knives, guided horizontally or vertically;
it does not matter whether the knife guide is in front, above, below or behind the sewing point. It is advantageous in any case to keep the spine material of the books taut and rigidly during the cutting operation o In the case where the cutting device is placed behind the place of seam, advantageously the separating woods are used and they are employed to automatically trigger the cutting device, which cat possible by the fact that these separating woods

In this case, the cut could also take place vertically against the material of the back of the liver, to days stretched as rigidly as possible. This last arrangement is advantageous for the cutting of the ribbons and involves displacements. noticeably smaller knives; but these must then be given an appropriate position with respect to the points and the distribution of the ribbons on the back.
The object of the present invention is a process for the separation of books, in which the terminated books themselves provide, directly or indirectly, the necessary impulse to actuate the cutting device. This impulse can take place according to the most common ways. more different, and the embodiments indicated below constitute only different advantageous examples for the sewing method employed in each case considered.
This principle is entirely new. No attempt has yet been made to perform this separation of books mechanically, which has hitherto been carried out by hand.
The accompanying drawings show some exemplary embodiments of the invention and the

The machine for sewing books in vegetable thread, to which the invention is applied in all the exemplary embodiments shown, is a machine with an oscillating movement notebook, but the invention can also be applied to everything else. be machine system.
In the walls I and 2 (figs. I and 2), oscillates, on the notebook-rest levers 4,5, the notebook-rest 6,7, in the extreme upper position of which the needles pass through the fold of the notebook 50, resting on the notebook stand, and connecting this notebook, by sewing, to the material constituting the back, which comes from above, as shown in 8.3. The rods 10, There are devices of adjustable braking, to always give the necessary tension to the material constituting the back The notebooks, joined by sewing, move backwards, After the last notebook of the book, we preferably make a white stitch, we insert a wood of 'separation 51, and then place the first notebook of the new book,
and so on. Books and dividing logs thus move uninterruptedly backwards, and this movement is used, in the considered embodiment, to trigger the cutting device, by the fact that the separation wood finally hits a flexible stopper, The construction is as follows:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
A connecting rod 21, guided in the wall I in the bearing 48 and driven by a reciprocating movement by the oscillating movement notebook lever 4, is connected to it, at the front by the stud 15, engaged in an elongated hole 14 of the oscillating notebook lever 4, and is similarly connected, at the rear, to the two-arm lever 23, 24, which can oscillate about the axis 25 carried by the console 22, fixed to the frame. The arm 24 of the lever 23, 24 is connected by the connecting rod 29 (figs. 2 and, 5) to the knife holder 27 and communicates to the latter a back and forth movement so as to move it longitudinally in the groove of the separating wood 51.This knife holder slides on rods
28,
28a and carries the knife 26, as well as a feeler 43 (fig. 7); which penetrates into the longitudinal groove of the separating timber 51 and regulates the exact position of the latter, and a disabling cam, 44.
The coupling between the connecting rod 21 and the frame-laying lever 4 is produced in a removable manner. The pin 15 can be withdrawn from the elongated hole 14 by means of the slide 17, guided on the connecting rod 21 and able to move relative to it. here and which, when its right end, in the form of a wedge, engages under the inclined face of the collar 20, provided on the stud 15 (fig. 5) interrupts the connection with the po @ se-cahier lever 4 ?, by overcoming the pressure of the spring I60 The slider 17 can be actuated by the lever 19 which can pivot at 79 on the frame. The protective plate 72, mounted on the booklet lever 4, is used to hold the pin 15,

In addition in these pads 30, 31 is journaled the transverse shaft 40 (Figs.

The lever 41 is connected by the shaft 40 to the lever 42, so that it also raised the nose of the lever 34, so that the separating wood 51 (fig 2) is simultaneously released from both sides.
So that the. connecting rod 21 is only coupled, if necessary, by pin 15, with the oscillating movement notebook lever 4, the following device is used: lever 19, which can rotate around axis 79, has a second arm,

which is connected by the stud 74 (figs 1 and 4) to a stop lever 18, which is wedged. on the fixed position pin 85, so that it can be moved up and down as well as to either side. This lever carries a finger

fixed on the bearing 48 (Fig. 4 and thus energizes the spring 46, so that the finger 49, mounted on the lever 18, is lifted and can, in a suitable position, enter

through uno ezatai.c in the shape of 1.73-76, in the angle of fig. 6a). The finger 49 has a narrow part,
who can
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
engage in the narrower middle part, of the notch 73-
76 so that in this position the wider upper part of the finger is retained above the angle iron.
The operating mode of the device described above is as follows: The separation wood 51; gradually moving backwards, finally comes to meet finger 49 (fig. I); which protrudes into the path of this wooden piece passing through the notch in the left angle iron; this separating wood thus pushes back the finger 49, until it comes to place itself above the widened rear part 73 of this notch and can then fall through it under the action of its own weight. At the same time;
the notched ends of the last parting wood, at the time considered, engage under the cams 36,37 of the levers 34,35 and push these upwards, so that their rear noses are lowered and, when the separation wood continues to move backwards, slowly pulling the two runners 30
31 with their accessories.The separation wood is thus brought in; on both sides, engaging with the rear noses of levers 34,35.As soon as lever 18, with finger 49;
, which has also always moved back (figs.I and 4) falls through the widened part 73 of the notch, under the action of its own weight, the lever 19 pivots back (fig.) and drives the slider 17 with it behind. This slider 17 thus escapes, by sliding, from under the inclined face of the collar 20 and the pin 15 can, under the action of its spring 16, engage in the part, extreme upper position following the lever poses notebook 4, in the elongated hole 14 thereof, so that, during its pivoting movement, the connecting rod 21 is driven forward (fig. 4) and the knife 26, with its parts 78,44,43 (fig. 7) is moved to the left,
transversely above the receiving plate of the machine, and thus separates the last book. The feeler 43 (figo7) first engages in the groove of the separating wood and thus ensures the exact position of this Here in relation to the knife, the canvas, the ribbons and the threads are all cut in this way.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Approximately three quarters of its forward stroke, the connecting rod 21 strikes, by its nose 75, the lever 18 and pushes it forward. The roller 45 is thus forced to rise on the fixed part with inclined face 47 and as' finger 49 cannot yet pass upwards through the angle iron, since the middle part of the notch 73-76 is too narrow, the spring 46 is put under a strong tenston. In the extreme forward position of the connecting rod 21, the finger 49 is located under the enlarged part 76 of the notch and can then pass through it. such applies, during the oscillating movement backwards, in the upper position of the lever 18, above the.
angle and is retained. As a result of the movement of this lift 18, the slider 17 has also moved forward, so that in the extreme upper position of the lever 4, the pin 15 is pulled out of the elongated hole 14, as a result of the cooperation wedge-shaped pieces 17 and 20, and the connection between the connecting rod 21 and the notebook lever 4 is removed.
The parts are then again at rest, namely all in a position such that the game described above can be restarted, as soon as a separating wood pushes the finger 49 back.
The exemplary embodiment described above is applicable to a book sewing machine; in which separating woods are inserted between the different books and where there is advantageously a white stitch, to facilitate extraction. of the loop, but this is not absolutely necessary.
Figs. 8 to II show, also schematically, how the separation of the different books can take place without the use of wood separators. A knife 53, guided in front of the needles, transversely above the machine, in a slide 52;
moves, at the appropriate moment, along the groove 55 (fig. 6) and cuts the material constituting the spine of the book; it can then immediately go back or make its return stroke, on the next impulse and then cut on its other side The cut end of the ribbons or canvas folds down (fig. 10), so that the
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
lever 56, which then moves downwards, can push back over the new piece of material constituting the spine. Lever 56 can remain in this position (fig. II) until the next book is finished returns to its extreme top position shortly before moving the knife again (figs.8,9).
77 also designates the needle bar to which are fixed, in an adjustable position, the ribbons 12 with their pushers 57. The impulse, which triggers the cutting and separating device, can be provided by the point white seam or by a particular adjustable "counter". The slide 52 can be reciprocated in the manner indicated above, or for example, by a cable or in any other suitable manner.
Figs. 12 and 13 represent - also diagrammatically - another solution, in which the dobby constituting the back is cut, not by a transverse movement, but by a vertical movement of the knife. 58 designates its guideo
In the needle bar 77, a plate 60, provided with inclined slots 61,
62 and moved back and forth by the lever 59, is moved transversely above the machine. 65, 64 slides, guided laterally;, move forward and backward in these slots 61 and 62. On these slides is mounted the knife 65 (figs.12,13), which cuts the material constituting the back, pushed forward, on the back lace 66 of the guide 58. Preferably, the edge of the knife is slightly inclined, so that it can be cut in the manner of scissors. The pulse is produced in the same way as in the second embodiment.
The figoI4 represents a device similar to that of figs.12,13.The knife 67 is mounted on a slide bar 68 but is moved laterally,
that is to say, animated by a 'back and forth movement. Here again, a clamping device is provided which holds the material constituting the back, at the time of cutting, by the fact that the lever 69 pushes the plate, moved in the same way as the slides 63,64 in the case of fig. 12, against the guide 71 and maintains the material located in-

Instead of the flat knife described, we can also use circular knives, which can be turned when they become blunt.
With the separating devices working at the front, it is necessary, as soon as it is necessary to cut the sewing threads in another way; for example, we can pass the upper thread of the white stitching point over a titi knife and thus cut it, so that the separation of the finished fibers is thus achieved. This knife, used to cut the threads, can be placed in a suitable place in the direction of the backward movement of the books in the receiving tray.
The invention therefore consists essentially in that, in sewing machines for books, belonging to any desired systems,
after each book is finished, either in any desired location in the block of books still joined together, or after sewing the last notebook of each book, the material constituting the spine of the book, and possibly also the threads, in the case where There are some, are automatically cut, this separation can be done in front of or behind the
