D'autre
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
5.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
fig. l.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

ARTICULATED SLIDING FOR RAILS. the
Ordinary fishplates have the serious drawback of not being and remaining in perfect contact with the rail unless the fishplates always occupy a position parallel to the web of the rail. However, nothing guarantees this parallelism which, moreover, does not occur in practice.
In fact, in the main order, because of the strong inclination of the fishplates and the location of the bolts in the middle of the height of the fishplates, and secondarily because of the play that necessarily exists between the bolts and the holes drilled in the web of the rail and in the fishplates, the upper part of the fishplates can approach the web of the rail, while the lower part deviates from it or vice versa, even when the bolts are tight. These angular displacements are facilitated and their amlitude increases by the loosening of the bolts which occurs in service. They are the cause of the rapid wear of the fishplates of the rails and the fishplates which take a rounded shape.
The assembly, which was already not very rigid at the start, is therefore becoming less. This results in exaggerated shocks at the joint, rapid deformation of the ends of the rails, expensive maintenance of the track and premature decommissioning? fishplates and rails.
Else
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
On the other hand, the quantity of metal necessary to achieve the flat, strong inclination fishplates is important because it exists over the entire length of the rails, and yet it is only useful for the right back fishplates and it does not exist. 'increases the resistance of the rails relatively little because it is located too close to the inertia counter.
The object of the invention is to remedy the shortcomings of ordinary fishplates mentioned above and more particularly: 1. to produce a rigid assembly in which the articulated fishplates cannot move angularly in either direction for as long as the bolts are tight, and can only have an angular displacement in one direction and very limited in amplitude, when the bolts become loose in service. The reduction of this amplitude is obtained thanks to the articulation: and thanks to the more favorable location which can be given to the boudons.
2. to consequently decrease the frequency of tightening of bolts in service, and the maintenance costs of the track 3. to prolong the life of the rails and the fish plates, by reducing their wear, and the shocks to the joint, 4. to equal weight of the rails, to increase their resistance to bending or vice versa, for equal resistance, to decrease the weight of the rails.
5.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
5. to radically eliminate any drilling of holes in the web of the rail by allowing the clamping bolts of the fishplates to be placed under the base of the rail, and by limiting the path of the rails by means of parts welded to the rail. Cn thus radically eliminates the most frequent cause of broken rails, since statistics are learning; that about 75% of these breaks occur at the holes drilled in the rail for the fishplate bolts.
The invention relates to an assembly of rails characterized: a .. in that one of the two supports of 1'Polisse on the rail is constituted by an articulation whose center occupies an invertible position with respect to the rail throughout 1 ' 'operation of tightening the assembly, the shapes and dimensions of the erticulation allowing it to withstand the vertical and h @ rizotaux forces of the rail.
b, what the second press cī; the fishplate on the rail has a surface; this low-curvature cylindrical, non-concentric 3.the articulation and which is applied on a cylindrical surface of the same curvature integral with the rail, the tightening of the bolts producing the approximation and jamming of the two cylindrical surfaces with low curvature and, consequently,
the energetic sorrage of the whole assembly. vs. in that the rail has an oppropriate profile to receive the articulation,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the joint, and the cylindrical surface, with low curvature of the fishplate.
We give below, by way of examples, and not by way of limitation, some embodiments of the invention.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the fishplate 7 has at its upper part a surface of circular section 3 of the counter 5, serving as an articulation and which is housed in a groove 3 of the same section, hollowed out in the head of the rail. The fishplate 7 has an upper part a cylindrical surface at its upper part a cylindrical surface 4 with low curvature, of center G. This surface is applied to an identical surface of the rail shoe. Since centers 5 and 6 do not match, tightening the bolts tightens the assembly.
It can be seen from the drawing that this joint eliminates any possibility of angular displacement of the joint in one. either way, as long as bolt 2 remains tight.
When this bolt loosens in service, the only possible displacement of the fishplate is a displacement of its lower part outward., Equal loosening of the bolts, this displacement is much smaller than for ordinary fishplates, because of the existence of the joint 3. The amplitude of this displacement is further reduced when the bolt 2 is placed lower than the middle of the fish plate as shown in fig 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
fig. l. We will see later that the embodiment represented by FIG. 9 further reduces this amplitude.
To allow the nut of the bolt 2 of the pin 1 to be fully tightened without completely crushing and unnecessarily straining the spring 21 or causing the latter to break, the latter is housed in the groove 40 of the fishplate and the large base 41 of the nut bears on the outer surface 42 of the fishplate, when the bolt is tightened. This does not prevent the effective action of the spring as soon as the bolt loosens, the spring having additional relaxation. It goes without saying that the groove 40 do redisse can be replaced by a nozzle or a cap threaded on the shank of the bolt and which would have a sufficient hollow to receive the spring 41.
It can be seen from the drawing that the average height of the head of the rail is less, at equal height of the lateral surface of the head, that is to say at equality of the resistance of the side wall against the wear produced by the friction of the wheel montennet.
,or
The design also shows that at equal thickness of the edge of the shoe, the average thickness of the shoe is less than in the ordinary profile rail.
For an equal weight of metai, we can therefore increase the total height of the rail, widen the head, give a thickness
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
greater thickness at the edge of the shoe thus bring the profile of the rail closer to a double T section and bring the center of inertia of the middle closer to the height of the rail. All these transformations considerably increase the resistance of the rail to bending. In addition, a widening of the running surface decreases wear and increases the life of the rals.
Reciprocally, with equal resistance of the rails the saving of metal achieved by the elimination of the ordinary spans of the rail, is very important and largely compensates, and beyond, the additional costs for the machining of the hollow under the head. . The metal strip 12 of the mushroom, it is located q outside the joint, is hardly larger than the clearance necessary between an ordinary fishplate and the web of the rail.
As a result, the contact area between the rail and the fishplate in line with the joint is increased by approximately 3: 2 compared to an ordinary fishplate.
The hollow 3 under the head of the rail can exist over the entire length of the rail and be produced at the time of rolling by hot upsetting of a metal strip obtained laterally to the head by a first rolling operation, for old rails, the groove 3 can be made in the way by means of a milling machine or a portable mill,
Fig. 2 shows an embodiment in which
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
which the joint 3 of the fishplate rests in a section housing, circular 3 formed between the web 8 of the rail and. a horizontal part 19 of the underside of the mushroom.
The articulation 3 no can be released towards the outside, because a rotation of the splice around the point 9 would require the removal of the metal of the mushroom which is under the arc 17 against 9.
In the embodiment shown in fig. 3, the joint 3 is housed in a female member 15 resting on the lower surface 19 of the head, made parallel to the base of the rail. 15 outwards is impossible, without removing the metal from the mushroom which is located under the arc 17 with center 9.
In the embodiment shown by the left part of FIG. 4, the articulation 3 is carried by a part 14 resting on the shoe of the rail, the upper face of which is parallel to the base of the rail or slightly
EMI7.1
1 5 / relative to 3 low curvature cylindrical surface 4, depending on the rail is formed by a part 23 placed under the head, the underside of which is parallel to the base of the rail. The release of the part 14 to the left would only be possible if the metal of the pad was removed above the arc 18 of center 20.
In the embodiment represented by the right part of fig. 4, the lower face of the head of the rail
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
of the rail itself constitutes the cylindrical surface with low curvature 4. In the same embodiment, the articulation 3 with center 5 is further away from the web than in the left part of fig. 4- to decrease the forces undergone by the bolt 2 when the trains pass.
In this case the release of the part 14 to the right is also prevented by the rim 26 of the saddle 27.
In fig. 3 and 4, the longitudinal movement of parts 15, 23 and 14 is prevented by notches 24 which embrace the shank of bolt 2.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show rails which can be rolled by the ordinary process, without special finishing.
An embodiment not shown is that in which the parts 15,25 ot 14 are welded to the rail.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment in which the web of the rail is not traversed by any bolt, which eliminates the most frequent cause of rail breakage. The surface 3 of the rail which acts as a support for the rail. The joint of the splice is formed by the upper surface of the shoe. The center 5 of this surface 3 is placed in the vertical axis of the rail, lower than the shoe.
It is formed by the contact of the two lower flanges of the fish bars 7. The circular section surface 3, yes bars pivot around point 5 always rests perfectly on the surface 3 of the rail for the duration of the tightening of the bolts 28.This tightening is

ribs, butts against the surface 4 of the same curvature of the rail, the center of which is at point 6.
The running of the rails is limited to the clearance necessary for the expansion and contraction of the rail by means of plates 31, elongated in the longitudinal direction of the rail, electrically welded by the bead-and weld 36 to the web of the rail. These plates are trapped in back housings 33 made in the ribs 7. These housings 33 have, perpendicular to the rail a sufficient depth to allow the recall of the wear of the ribs and in the longitudinal direction of the rail, a length greater than the plates. 31, the difference representing the expansion play as shown in fig. 6.
It goes without saying that the anti-tracking stopper 31 of FIG. 5 can be integral with an added part such as 23 of FIG. 4 which would be welded to a rail whose head would have a horizontal lower surface.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 7, the assembly has only three clamping bolts 28 arranged as in FIG. 5 from the point of view of their location in height. These bolts, which do not pass through the web of the rail, can have a very large diameter.
Instead of four bolts, the minimum number used in ordinary couplings, there are no longer any included here, including one at the right of the solution of continuity of the rails, the most useful location for the correct alignment of the rails.

Pin 35 can rigorously be replaced by a nut which would only be tightened after energetically tightening the bolts 28, the latter then receiving a further final tightening.
It goes without saying that if, in the device of fig. 5, the cylindrical surfaces 3 and 4 were replaced by piano surfaces, a less perfect derivative of the present invention would be obtained, since the cylindrical surface
3 can only be placed within an infinite radius.
The springs 21 placed under the nuts. 43 bolts
28 in fig. 5 are protected against crushing by the device already shown in fig.l. Instead of this device uu together with it, it is possible to provide in two or three places of the articulation 5, springs 45 (see fig. 8) which have the form of split pipes and which are housed in cells 46 of the 'lower end of the ribs 7 and which are only partially compressed when the lower part of the ribs 7 comes into contact at point 5.
The extension of the spokes 5o of fig. 5 which results from a relaxation
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
The tent of the springs 45 is only minimal and hardly detracts from the good contact between the surfaces 3 of the fishplate and the shoe, and this elongation only occurs in the event of loosening of the bolts 28.
Fig. 9 shows an embodiment in which the rail has the profile indicated in fig.l but in which the fishplates 7 descend lower than the rail and are tightened by bolts 28 located under the shoe of the rail. . The path being stopped by the device beyond fig. 5 the core is not pierced with any hole.
This device considerably reduces the amplitude of the loosening of the fishplates for a determined loosening of bolts.
In the embodiment shown in fig.10, the core is also not pierced with holes. The ribs, di which have the general form indicated in fig. 1, are tightened by flanges 51 which exist only at the right of the bolts. These flanges, which have a shape similar to the lower part of the fishplates 7 of FIG. 5, are embedded at their upper part in practical recesses 52 in the ribs 7. The path is stopped by cleats 31 welded to the rail.
