<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
La Fig. 1 est une vue de face de la tête d'une machi- ne à agrafer de modèle connu, à laquelle le présent mécanisme d'alimentation perfectionné est adapté; -. La Fig. 2 est une coupe suivant la ligne 2-2 de la Fig. 1 à travers le rouleau d'alimentation inférieur et mon- trant l'encliquetage de retenue;
La Fig. 3 montre une partie de la plaque antérieure, le mécanisme actionnant les rouleaux ainsi que le chapeau fé- glable étant enlevés du rouleau inférieur;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Stapling machine or stitcher".
The present invention relates to stapling or stitching machines and relates more particularly to the feed mechanism of these machines. Its aim is to provide an improved and simplified rotary movement feed mechanism and thus to overcome the drawbacks which hitherto resulted from the use of reciprocating movement members.
One of the features of the invention resides in the use of a feed mechanism comprising rollers rotating in a continuous movement and having a peripheral surface which engages with the metal wire and in
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
delivers a determined length during the rotational movement of the rollers.
The invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the head of a stapling machine of known design, to which the present improved feed mechanism is adapted; -. Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1 through the lower feed roller and showing the retaining snap;
Fig. 3 shows part of the front plate, the mechanism operating the rollers as well as the snap cap being removed from the lower roller;
Fig. 4 shows the lower feed roller seen from above and shows the notch in its peripheral surface.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the feed pawl.
The invention is shown in its application to a stapling machine of known type, comprising a front plate 10 carrying a cam 11 connected by a connecting rod 12 to a plunger 13 and by a roller 14 to a shaper 15.
This and the plunger are mounted in a box 16 and cooperate with an anvil 17 mounted in a known manner and moving in a reciprocating motion forwards and backwards.
On the plate 10 is mounted in a known manner a section box 18, the position of which can be adjusted in a known manner by means of the handwheel 19. The cutting box also carries a thread guide 20, by which the thread guide. metal wire is fed.
The feed mechanism preferably comprises
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
two feed rollers, tooth an upper roller 22 with a plain rim and a lower roller 23 connected by gears 24, 25, and actuated by a control shaft through the gears 26, 27 and 28, of which the gear 27 functions as a return pinion, while the gear 28 is wedged on the drive shaft 29. The ratio of the gears is preferably such as for forward and reverse travel. -return of the shaper and plunger, the feed rollers making a full revolution, but it is obvious that other gear ratios can be used if desired.
To ensure intermittent flow of the metal wire 21, a movable pawl 30 is preferably used, pivoting on an axis 31 integral with the lower feed roller 23.
A spring 32 pushes the pawl 30 outwards, but the movement of the latter is limited by its coming into contact with the supply roller 23 at point 23 a. This pawl 30 is preferably adjusted so that, during the part of a revolution in which the wire is fed, its drive face presses the wire 21 against the upper feed roller 22, so that the simultaneous rotation of the two rollers drives Wire 21 towards the stapling mechanism. The rim of the roller 23 is notched at 23b so as not to chunk the wire during the period when it should not be debited.
In the embodiment shown, the drive face of the pawl 30 is of sufficient length to drive the length of wire necessary for the largest staple provided and there is an adjustment device which allows for variation. the length of wire cut according to the dimensions of the staple that is to be obtained. At this' in, a pebble @ - ..
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
adjustment 33 is mounted on a plate 34 adjustably mounted on the anterior end of the shaft 35 of the lower feed roller, and held in place by a nut 36 screwed onto the shaft 35 but allowing free rotation of the feed roller 23.
The angular position of this plate 34 can therefore be adjusted at will on the shaft 35, which moves the adjusting roller 33 towards the. right or left. During the rotation of the lower roller 23, the drive pawl 30 contacts the adjustment roller 33, and when the trailing edge 30a of the pawl 30 leaves the roller 33, the pawl is left free of movement. jump outwards and engage with wire 21 so as to begin to feed it. Thus, as long as the feed pawl 30 remains in engagement with the adjustment roller 33, its drive face is kept out of contact with the wire 21. But as soon as it leaves the roller 33, it enters. in contact with the wire 21, which it presses against the roller 22.
It can therefore be seen that, although only one pawl 30 is used, thanks to the adjustment roller 33, the moment of disengagement of the pawl 30 can be varied so as to deliver different lengths of the wire 21. It is obvious that, although the Preferably, the adjustable drive pawl 30 is employed, a series of different sized pawls may also be used, the drive faces of which correspond to the different lengths of wire to be fed. The size of the clip is then determined by the length of the drive face of the pawl 30 used instead of the time of release of this pawl as shown here.
To keep the thread tight during operation, the mechanism also includes the usual retaining pawl 38 and the tension guide 39, the illustrated shape of which is well known. @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
For operation, the sectioning box is adjusted in a known manner with respect to the anvil 17 and to the shaper 15 by means of the handwheel 19, so as to produce a symmetrical clip, i.e. ie having two equal legs, which is achieved during adjustment, either before or after the length of wire to be cut has been determined.
Adjustment roller 33 is also adjusted by loosening jam nut 36 and moving plate 34 until rear edge 30a of the drive pawl disengages from adjustment roller 33 to engage the drive pawl. wire 21 and clamp it against the feed roller 22 when desired. The lock nut is then tightened again. With gears 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28, feed rollers 22 and 23 make one full revolution for each back and forth movement of the stapler mechanism, and although feed rollers 22-23 rotate continuously while the stapler is in operation, there is useful contact between the two feed rollers 22-23 and the wire 21 only during the period when the drive pawl 30 clamps the wire 21 against the roller 22.
The duration of this flow is of course determined by the adjustment of the roller 33. A length of wire corresponding to any desired staple size can therefore be cut within the operating limits of the machine.
The control mechanism of the stapler is not shown, but it can be any, the machine shown being actuated by the control shaft 29 which generally extends rearward and carries a pulley and a pulley. clutch controlled by a pedal placed at the foot of the support on which the machine is generally mounted. It goes without saying that the usual jaws and table are arranged under the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
head of the machine, but have not been shown., since their function is well known.
Although a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, this should not be considered as limited to the example described and shown here, since it is susceptible of numerous variations. falling within the scope of the following claims.
