ver".

/
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"SHAPING MACHINE RLLIBTIQURMRNT OR CIRCULA IRRMRNT THE 1 OBJECTS DR FPRMR RLLIPTIQUIC OR RC'lNDli: 1t
The present patent relates to a machine for elliptically or circularly shaping objects of elliptical or round shape, ie bevelling, milling etc ... by means of grinding wheels or cutters, flat or elliptical sheets. or round, glass objects such as mirrors, marble, porcelain, etc.
The machine allows you to work on the periphery of objects as well as anywhere on their surface.
The machine 'envisaged comprises a plate carrying the workpiece of which the advancement of the edge or of the custom-made part.
EMI1.2
ner is constant by constant peripheral entrainemazt, as will be explained below. The grinding wheels or cutters can work vertically or horizontally and are located at the end of an arm comprising a rotation device called "revol- /

ver ". Then the arm supporting the grinding wheel (s) or milling cutters, as well as the column supporting by hinge, the table on which the plate receiving the object to be shaped is fixed, are both orientable.
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, the description below and the appended drawings schematically represent an embodiment of the object of the invention used to shape the periphery of elliptical mirrors or render , given merely as an example; the mirror being placed horizontally; it could just as well be placed vertically or in another position
For this purpose:
Fig.I shows a vertical section along the vertical plane passing through the line AB fig.2, on which are the points of attack of the objects to be shaped; in the example shown; the edge of an elliptical mirror.
Fig.2 is a plan view of Fig.I.
Fig. 3, a vertical section, along the minor axis of the ellipse, of the table and the plate supporting the object to be shaped.
Fig. 4 a horizontal section according to CD fig.3.
Fig.5 a vertical section similar to Fig.3, but along the major axis of the elliptical plate.
Figs. 6 and 7, represent in elevation and plan on a larger scale the assembly of the grinding wheels working by a circular base.
Figs. 8 and 9 show in elevation and plan on a larger scale, the assembly of the grinding wheels working by their generators, that is to say with common axes and generators.
The fig.10,11,12 relate to cutouts in a construction detail causing the back and forth movement of the grinding wheel shown in fig.8 and 9 so as to increase the working surface thereof.
Rn referring to the figures detailed above

envisaged machine comprises a frame! provided with an extension
32 supporting a column 3. Above the frame 1 can pivot and be positioned therein in the desired orientation by suitable means, a barrel 2 provided at its upper end with a knife 5. on which a table can be tilted 6. and so take all the desired inclinations.
On the shaft 2 is fixed an arm 4, the end of which carries a ball-joint rod 29 engaged by threading internally in a sleeve 28 provided with a handwheel 27., in this sleeve 28 is also engaged in a screw thread of opposite pitch a threaded rod: 30 carrying the ball joint 31 fixed to the table 6. Thus, by the operation of the handwheel 27, the inclination of the table 6 is modified. The barrel 2 "also supports a tank II containing the mechanism of the machine and used to collect in this example the water for continuous cooling of the glass at the grinding point.
In the example deorit the outer edge of the mirror must be bevelled. The mirror rests almost horizontally on a removable tray 8. which exactly matches its shape.
Its weight or any other appropriate means keeps it there and its edge is ground by one of the horizontal sludges of a hollowed out cylindrical grinding wheel 12 controlled by the shaft 13 This plate
8 is elliptical in the present case, but can be circular, rests by studs 33 (see fig. 3) on the spider 34 secured to a second plate 7 sliding by rolling on the variable tilt table 6 and containing, A mechanism suitable for giving the whole a combined movement such that:
I) the mirror $ is animated by a translational movement under the grinding wheel 12 at the point of attack 43.
2) The length of glass to be beveled passes under the grinding wheel 12 in proportion to the working time.
/
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The first movement (elliptical) is obtained by means of the known system of two 'slides 35 and 36 (see fig. 3,
4, and 5, integral with the plate 7.
These two slides 35. and 36 at right angles, slide respectively in slides 38 and .42, the fixed distance of which, different for each ellipse, is equal to the half difference in the lengths of the coordinated axes of the ellipse. The two sliders 38. And 42, in the case where the machine is arranged to bevel round or other parts can be superimposed as it will be oblique in the following:
Below the slide 38 and connected to the bucket slide
38 by a roller or thickness 39 is a slider 40 in which slides the slider 37 wedged by a pressure screw 40 allowing to wedge the center 0 at the desired location on the slider 37 relative to point 0 'of the slider 42 see fig.4, it is this distance 0 0. *. which is equal to the half difference of the coordinate axes of the ellipse. The strip 37 and the slide 42 are integral with a fixed part 41 engaged in the tilting table 6.
The strip 37 can therefore only take one position and the vertical plane which passes through its longitudinal axis contains all the grinding attack points. Second movement, translation of the edge of the object to be bevelled, the glass 9, passes under the grinding wheel in proportion to the working time, is obtained as follows:
The plate 8, carrying the elliptical glass 9, is constructed in the form of an elliptical pulley of shape and dimensions identical to those of the ice whose periphery is to be worked. If it was a question of guilloché a design on the face of the mirror, the shape of the elliptical pulley would be that of the guilloché design.
This plate 8 forming a pulley is driven by the intermediary of a belt 44 and two return rollers 23, one of which is fixed elastically so as to keep the tension of the belt equal, and by a circular pulley 22 of constant speed whose axis 21 is perpendicular.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cular to table 6. This axis is in the vertical plane of the grinding points of the various ellipses. This axis 21 carries a helical wheel 20 controlled by a worm carried by the end of the shaft of an electric motor 19 (see fig.1) integral with the table 6. The return rollers .23, are found for each mirror or object dimension at a different location as close as possible to the grinding point 43.
For this purpose, the rollers 23 are supported by the end of one of the branches of a part in 2 such as 24, whose branch star resting on the table 6 is fixed there at an adjustable distance for each mirror or object, by means of crosspieces 26 held by bolts 25.
It is superfluous to point out that all the grinding points of all the different glasses, mirrors or other objects are in the same vertical plane. As stated above, this vertical plane is orientable with the shaft 2.
In summary, the advancement of the edge of the biseautex window is constant by constant peripheral drive.
Between the first plate 8¯ and the second is interposed a protective plate 10 against the cooling water of the grinding point. It has an elliptical shape.
The bevel is inclined relative to the plane of the mirror 9 by the system described below * The axis 13 of the grinding wheel being of invariable direction in space; all the ice-carrying apparatus can tilt around the hinge 5 located in the plane of the underside of the table'¯6- at the intersection of the latter and a plane perpendicular to the vertical vertical plane containing the etching paintings of different elliptical mirrors or other objects. If the plane of the grinding wheel is for example horizontal the table 6¯ will take an inclination of 5 to 10%.
Grinding wheel 12 or grinding wheels (one per work phase)
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
are mounted on a shaft 13. maintained by bearings 16 (see schematic figs 1 and 2) and supported at the end of an arm 17 supporting the drive motor 47 which arm is connected to a revolving bush 18 covering the the upper end of the column 3 connected to the extension 32 of the frame 1. In fig.7 are shown the grinding wheel shafts 13 supported by arms 11! and driven by pulleys 14 connected by belts 45 to the central pulley 46 controlled by the belt driven by the electric motor 47.
The grinding wheel shafts 13 can slide vertically in their bearings 16. The wheels are balanced by a system of counterweights. For this purpose a lever 50, having its point of articulation at 57 embraces a cleat 15 of the shaft 13 and supports at one end a fixed counterweight 49 balancing the weight of the grinding wheel and on the other an adjustable weight. 48 intended to give the working pressure. so that the grinding wheel 12 can always attack the bevel at the theoretical point of attack 11, point determined by the movement described above, the arm 17 or 17 'supporting the grinding wheels and the column or shaft 2 supporting by the hinge 5. the table 6 can both orient themselves as described.
The grindstones 12 can also be placed all on a tree, for example, horizon tal 54 and have their generators in continuation of one another. These gemerators would take either a position parallel to the mean position of the tngent at the end. 'ellipse at the point of attack; and thus make a cylindrical bevel. Or be placed so that their generatrices are perpendicular to the average position of the tangent to the ellipse in the starting paint and thus make a bevel of straight section. Or occupy any intermediate position.
The grinding wheels therefore come to their working position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
vail by sliding along their common axis and abandon the working position to make room for another grinding wheel in the same smooth manner.
To this end, Figures 8 and 9 show an arrangement pe putting the use of the grinding wheel 12 working by its generators. The shaft is represented by 54, the grinding wheel by 12.
The arm 55. connected to a spider 56 allowing its orientation in a vertical and horizontal plane leaves at the front the bearings 16 of the shaft 54 and at the rear of the cross members supporting the electric motor 47 driving the belt by belt. pulley 56 of the grinding wheel shaft. At 50 is the arm for fixing the adjustable counterweight.
Figs. 10, 11 and 12 represent details of a mechanism suitable for enlarging the working surface of the grinding wheel 12. We poroque a back and forth movement of the grinding wheel as follows: On the shaft 54 of the grinding wheel is wedged a worm 59 meshing with a helical wheel 58 held by an axis fixed to a housing 67, the lower part of which slides around a fixed rod connected to the arm 55. This wheel carries a button 60, moving between the teeth of the fork 61, 62 connected to an operating rod 63 provided with a handle 64. Notches 65 are arranged on this rod which can be locked against a stop 66 jported for example by part 55 of the frame.
When the handle 64 is lifted and moved, the button 60, the wheel 58, the screw 59 and the shaft 54 which move back to the desired location are driven by the oven = ohe 61,62. The fist 64 in its new position continues to serve as a support for the back and forth movement for the new grinding wheel which. then begins its work. Handle 64 has therefore been moved the distance necessary to bring the new grinding wheel to its working position.
The machide described may possibly include other constructive modalities, than those represented in the description above which was given only by way of example,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
with a view to its application to the use of objects of different nature and conformation.
The plate 8 shown being interohangeable can be replaced by a round plate or by others depending on the dimensions of the object and the nature of the work to be performed.
In summary, it should be understood as coming within the scope of the subject of the invention any machine comprising as a whole or separately the characteristic elements developed below:
