<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
dage.
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

"Device for handling gummed strips of paper or similar material
The invention relates to improvements to devices for moistening strips of gummed paper or the like, such as those generally used to secure or seal wrapping paper and other package envelopes.
Mon. One of the aims of the invention consists, inter alia, in creating devices which cause the gum strip to be moistened as soon as it is dispensed by a particular machine. According to the invention, the construction and arrangement of the device for moistening a gummed strip are such that this device
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
always ensures a good effect, that is to say a good moistening, regardless of the amount of moistening agent momentarily dispensed.
In a previous patent application, a device has already been described for dispensing a gummed strip, that is to say coated with an adhesive on one side, this device comprising a cutting member making it possible to separate the strip over any desired length. . This device contains, for humming the gummed strip, a special device in the form of a brush moistened with water. It also comprises a wick partially immersed in water and maintained on the other hand over a sufficiently large area in permanent contact with the brush to keep the latter always quite wet. The present invention is based on the device in question, already contained in this previous patent application and used to moisten gummed strips, etc.
Another object of the invention consists in creating, in order to moisten gummed strips, etc. a device constituted by an appropriate distribution source for the moisturizing agent and by a wetting agent, in the form of a brush for example., making it possible to apply the wetting agent to the gummed strip and arranged in relation to the source of distribution of the wetting agent so that its effectiveness is always assured regularly even when the source of distri.

Another object of the invention consists in creating, in order to moisten gummed strips, a device comprising a source of distribution for the moistening agent, a moistener, for example a brush, and an absorption agent carrying the moisture. wetting agent on the brush and thus allowing the latter to be mounted near the distribution source or at a certain distance therefrom, so that the correct
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
operation of the humidifier is ensured in all cases.
Another object of the invention was to create a device such as the humidifier, that is to say the brush, and the gummed surface of the strip are always in regular contact whenever this is to moisten part of the strip. A device comprising all these advantages, suitable for continuous service, capable also of ensuring this service for a long time perfectly and without any interruption, a device which can be adapted directly to a machine distributing the gummed strip, seems capable of fulfilling all the conditions currently required for devices and devices used to make packaging in large series.
The particular nature and other advantages of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1a a vertical section of a part of a machine dispensing a gummed strip, in combination with a humidifier constructed in accordance with the present invention and adapted to this machine; Figure 2 is a plan of the humidifier shown in Figure 1; Figures 3, 4 and 5 are vertical sections of which

The band is designated by 2 in the drawing. In practice it is wound on a roller (not shown in Figure 1) rotatably mounted in any way on the frame 1 so that we can make
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
straight out and cut any length of strip desired.
A delivery cylinder 3 is used to distribute the strip. This cylinder cooperates with a second delivery cylinder 4 and a knife
5 serving to cut the strip 2. The humidifier is shown at 6 in the form of a brush. Housing for moistening, for example water. is borrowed from a source 7 or from an appropriate reservoir. In Figures 1 and 2 the brush 6 is mounted on the reservoir 7, that is to say above the source of distribution of the wetting agent. Strip 2 passes under brush 3, the gummed side up.
In figures 3, 4 and 5 on the other hand. the brush is mounted inside the tank and constructed so as to exit therefrom at the top. the strip obviously passes in front of the brush 6, so as to be moistened by the latter. the gummed face always being at the bottom.
In Figures 1 and 2, the device comprises in addition to the brush 6 an absorbent material partially immersed in water, that is to say a wick 8 coming on the other hand in contact with the brush to transport the water by capillary action of the reservoir on the brush. It is therefore not necessary to immerse the brush 6 completely or partially in water; on the contrary, it could be fitted, if necessary, as shown in the drawing, entirely outside the reservoir 7. The position in which the brush is located outside the reservoir 7 is also immaterial. The desired effect is always assured in any case.
When it leaves the frame 1, the strip 2 passes over a transverse bar rounded on an edge. This is to keep it taut and smooth out wrinkles or other irregularities before reaching the delivery rollers 3 and 4. A pressure pad 10 serves to keep the web in firm contact with this bar 9. This pad is constituted by a plate or a sheet of metal folded on itself at one end at 11 and comprising a support. The actual support of this buffer
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
pressure 10 is designated by 12. One of the ends of the plate is curved downwards at 13 and has special tabs or ears for mounting a guide roller
14.
The actual pressure pad 15 'on felt or other suitable material is mounted in the wedge formed by the folding of one end. Above is a weight 16. This weight always presses the pad 15 down; that is to say that it always maintains it in very intimate contact with the band passing over the bar 9. Consequently, when the band is pulled to pass it over the bar 9, this band is not only smoothed out, but also definitively freed from internal tension forces which could exist and which might have the consequence that the tape would rewind itself again after its release. In any case, the strip is always smoothed uniformly by the device described and it is always distributed taut.
After having passed over bar 9, the strip passes through a slideway, the lower plate 17 of which rests at the top on the frame 1 and has an opening 18 through which the delivery roller 3 passes over part of its periphery. The other roller 4 is supported by a part 19 pivotally mounted on a support 20. Around the support 20 is wound a spring 21; one of the ends of the spring engages the underside of part 19 and the other end is fixed to a small rod 22 integral with the frame 1. The spring 21 always tends to raise the part 19, that is, that is to say to separate the rollers 3 and 4 from each other.
As soon as it comes to distributing the strip, however, the part 19 can be brought down so that the rolls touch each other and the strip is actually distributed in the desired way.
For this purpose, part 19 has an appendix 23. Opposite this appendix, the frame 1 carries a stop 24 in engagement with
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
this appendage 23 and limiting 'in a determined manner the movement of the part 19 upwards contrary to the action of the spring 21.
Appendix 23 has an opening. A rod 25 with a head at its top passed through this opening. As soon as a downward pull is exerted on this rod 25, the rollers 3 and 4 are forced to approach one another and finally come into engagement with the strip in order to distribute it towards the cutting member 5 and humidifier 26.
The frame 1 contains below the delivery roller 3 a shaft 26 and a toothed wheel 27. The toothed wheel meshes with a corresponding toothed wheel 28 forming part of the delivery roller 3 and this toothed wheel in turn meshes with a toothed wheel 29 forming part of the delivery roller 4. The shaft 26 and the wheel 27 may be between centers from any suitable point. As long as the rod 25 is not pulled down the delivery roller 3 remains in its upper position in which it is completely separated from the belt 2. Although the delivery roller 3 can still rotate, its friction on the belt 2 does not. will therefore never be enough to advance calla ci.
The teeth of the wheels 28 and 29 are cut relatively deeply, so that, even when the cylinder 4 is lifted, these teeth always remain in engagement with each other and since the delivery roller 4 always turns simultaneously with the delivery roller 3, as soon as the rod 5 is pulled down and the two rollers 3 and 4 are properly brought into engagement with the strip 2, the transport of the strip to the humidifier 6 begins immediately.
Between the rollers 3 and 4 and the cutting member 5 there is a block 30 carrying a plate 31 on its underside and at one end. The block and this plate 31 together with
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the lower plate 17 already mentioned above the guide slide of the uande. Plate 31 is fixed. to a plate
32 itself fixed to the upper face of the block 30. To keep the plate 31 assembled with the plate 32, one or more screws 33 can be used. The block 30 rests by its two ends on the sides of the frame 1 and goes to knife 5. again
Between the block and the knife there is another hollow slide for guiding the strip.
This slide is formed by an upper plate 34 covering the knife 5 and the block 30 and by a lower plate 35 ending a little in front of the knife. The end of the lower plate 35 is drawn downwards relative to the knife to form, with the corresponding end of the upper plate 34, a wide inlet opening for the strip 2 as soon as the 'end thereof advances passing over the knife 5. The knife is mounted transversely to the direction of. movement of the strip and its part 36 is curved outwards. Part 36 has an opening through which passes a rod 35 carrying a head at its upper part.
This rod is connected on the one hand to a lever 38 supported transversely and mounted at one end on a support 39 carried by the frame 1, a lever to which is connected at any given point, a spring 40 fixed to the frame 1. The spring 40 continuously tends to keep the lever 38 and the rod 37 raised. Of course, the rod 37 must be fixed to the part 36 of the knife so that it also raises the knife 5 to cut the strip 2 when the rod is raised. A rod 41, the lower part of which ends in a pedal is connected to the free end of the lever 38. An arm 42 is mounted on the pivot 43 carried by the frame 1 and this arm is articulated on the lower end of the rod 25. .
The arm 42 extends below the lever 38, where it ends very close to the rod 41.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The shank 37 of the cutting member 5 is normally lifted by the spring 40 and the part 19 is kept lifted by the spring 21 as far as the stop 24. Consequently, the roller 4 is normally spaced from the strip 2. Although the tree
26 and toothed wheel 27 keep rollers 3 and 4 in rotation by means of wheels 28 and 29, the belt does not advance for lack of sufficient friction on the lower feed roller 3. that the cutting member 5 also serves as a stop relative to the front end of the strip. But as soon as the pedal which is located at the lower end of the rod 41 is pressed, the cutting member 5 is forced to lower itself and the lever 38 pulls the rod 25 downwards by a pressure exerted on the arm 42.
Part 19 descends accordingly, that is to say that the rollers 3 and 4 now engage with the strip, which they pass, the slide in front of the cutting member and which they push under the wet brush 6. When a certain length of tape is wet, let go of the pedal. The spring 40 would now raise the cutting member 5 to cut the strip. As the lever 38 rises, the arm 42 can no longer be held down any longer, so that the roller 4 also returns to its upper position. The advancement of the tape would therefore be interrupted for the moment.
The cut length of strip which lies between the cutting member and the brush is further pulled completely outward and the strip can be glued directly onto a packet or envelope.
The construction and operation of this tape dispensing machine have been described in the preamble and they do not form part of the invention which particularly relates to the humotor.
In the freezes. 1 and 2, two split arms 41 are fixed to the tank 7. The slots in these arms are designated by 46 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
intended to serve as a housing for the ends of a rod 47.
The ends of the rod are screwed on with nuts which, when tightened, secure the rod to the arms in any given position. Each end of the rod carries two nuts, so that each arm 45 can be clamped between .., them. The bristles of the brush 6 are fixed in a sheath
48. The brush itself has a protection system 49.
On the one hand, this protection system is concave in shape so that the wick 8 can be conveniently housed below.
This protection system can be oonstitué by a clamp rigidly fixed to the sheath 48 and to the rod 47. The protection system is open on both sides so that the wick 8 can be passed through. The lower edge of the convex, or similar centrally, part of the protection system is applied to the end of the brush and prevents the bristles of the latter from being too far apart. The wick is folded several times under the protection system 49. The ends of the wick descend on the collars enter the reservoir 7 by special openings 50. The brush is preferably a little oblique and the front part of the protection system 49 is a little more long than the flat posterior part facing it.
This is particularly intended to prevent the bristles from being pulled apart outwards by repeated distributions of tape between the upper face of the reservoir and the lower end 6 of the brush. The inner part 35 of the slide which rests at the upper part on the tank 7 is longer than the upper part corresponding to the same slide and ending a little below or better almost immediately below the flat rear part of the protection system 49.
The bristles of the brush 6 are thus kept in very light contact with the lower part 35 of the slide, thus
3 and so that the band distributed by the rollers ± 4 can liter

conveniently pushed under the brush.
The wetting agent is brought through the wick 8 to the brush
6, which naturally also has a certain force of attraction by capillary action, in regular amounts but never too large, so that the band 2 can never be too wet either. It should be noted, moreover, that there will now no longer be any exaggerated wetting of the lower part 35 of the web guide system, even during stoppages. This result is made possible by the fact that the reservoir 7 is mounted on the path of the strip 2.
The humidifier which has just been described has already been shown and also described in the earlier patent application mentioned in the preamble and its operation is quite excellent during a long service.
In FIG. 3 a base plate 52 carries a reservoir 51 in which a lever 53 is mounted oscillating on a knife 54. One end of this lever carries a weight 55; at the other end follows a sheath 8 containing the bristles of the brush 6. In this case the brush is mounted backwards in the reservoir. The reservoir also contains an absorbent material, for example a wick 56, the ends of which are immersed in water and which contact the brush 6 at a point intermediate between the two ends to keep the bristles still. damp, dreary if the water level had dropped to below the upper edge of the sheath 48.
The strip passes through a guide system consisting of a lower part 57 fixed by two supports 58 on each side of the tank 51 and by an upper part 59 fixed directly to the supports 58 of the lower part 57, as shown in the drawing. The upper part 59 of the guide system and the brush 6 are kept slightly in contact so that the band can pass conveniently between the upper part of the guide system and the brush 6 as it advances through its guide system.

dage.
The sheath 48 of the brush is fixed on. the lever 53 by means of a special clamp 60.] In this embodiment the counterweight 55 maintains the brush continuously in contact with the upper part 59 of the guide system, thus making it possible also to take account of the possible wear of the bristles. The wick 56 keeps the brush wet as long as there is water in the reservoir, that is to say even when the water level drops to below the upper edge of the sheath 48.
In Figure 4 the reservoir 61 is mounted on a base plate 52 and the brush holder 48 is clamped in a clamp 62 or other supports. The gripper is mounted in this case directly on the bottom of the reservoir 61. Above the reservoir the lower part of the guide path 57 rests on supports 58. The reservoir contains a: $ wick 56 which comes into contact with the brush 6 exactly as in the embodiment described last. The reservoir is partially closed at the top at 65. The brush exits the reservoir at the top between one of the ridges of the closure 65 and the end of the lower portion 57 of the guide system.
The upper part 63 of the guide system ends with a knife by which the strip can be conveniently separated from the rest of the reserve after having been pulled over the brush 6 to the desired length in the case considered. In this particular embodiment of the invention, the strip is preferably pulled with the fingers, keeping it horizontal with respect to the guide system 57. The position of the upper part 63 of the guide system, which is still there. below the height of the upper ends of the bristles is a guarantee that the tape will soon come into contact with the bristles under sufficient pressure and thus be suitably moistened.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
Figure 5 shows yet another embodiment quite similar it is true to that of Figure 4 and differing particularly in that the lower part
57a of the guide system is mounted obliquely near the brush and that the assembly includes supports 66 for supporting a rod 67 by which a plate 68 loaded by a weight 69 at its free end is pivotally mounted. The end of the plate which is loaded by the weight rests on the brush and thus ensures perfect contact between the latter and the strip arriving via the guide system. This weight-loaded plate will also compensate for any wear on the brush.
By mounting the oblique brush at the beginning so that the gradual flexing of the ends of the bristles prevents the pressure of the plate 68 from becoming large enough that the plate itself still tilts substantially below the horizontal , it is ensured that the resistance opposed to the passage of the strip 2 through the humidifier by the working or the bending of the bristles cannot increase considerably.
In the embodiments of Figures 3, 4 and 5 the brush is kept slightly inclined so that as it passes over the brush the band tends to flex the bristles and the band tends to move them slightly away from the system. guidance. In this way the band can always pass conveniently over the brush without making any folds, as would certainly be the case if the brush 6 posed any obstacles to the passage of the band over the ends of the bristles.
It follows from the above description that the new improved humidifier necessarily requires or supposes the use of a brush, the bristles of which are held in a bag 48. In the embodiment shown in FIGS.
3, 4 and '5 the brush is immersed in the liquid, the sheath 48
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
at the bottom and the silks at the top. If the wick 56 were removed, the bristles would only be able to absorb the wetting agent if the liquid level was still in immediate contact with them above the upper edge of the basket 48. The apparatus, however, includes a wick 56 which still keeps the brush sufficiently wet when the liquid level has already fallen below the upper edge of the gatne 48. The device can therefore still be used successfully when there is no than relatively small amounts of water.
According to the invention, the absorbent material, for example the wick 56, is therefore used only to keep the brush still wet when it is no longer capable of itself absorbing the liquid from the bottom of the tank. The main idea In any event, it is possible to supply liquid to the bristles from places which are below the level at which the bristles themselves can still absorb the liquid.
In Figure 1 the bristles are held in the brush by means of a sheath, but the brush is in this case mounted entirely outside the reservoir 7 and in another position, i.e. the gatne at the top and the bristles below. The wick 8 makes the liquid rise to the brush, the lace of the band
