<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
La lampe ainsi établie, possède deux régimes de fonctionnement;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Improvement in the sarety mine lamps incandescent by hydrocarbons.
This invention relates to improvements in hydrocarbon safety mine lamps in general.
It can be used for other purposes as well as in mines and wherever it is desirable to have even more illumination than with lamps at atmospheric pressure.
According to the invention, the ventilation of the lamp (which, by virtue of its quality as a safety lamp, has a reduced air circulation which considerably reduces its lighting power), is carried out with compressed air. that we take from an independent source. This ventilation is carried out with the help of carefully placed pipes *
This lamp can also work without
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
compressed air without ceasing to be safety, but then its lighting will be less intensive.
An embodiment of a lamp made in accordance with the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a section of the lamp in elevation,
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the lamp burner also shown in elevation.
FIG. 3 shows, in partial section, an alternative embodiment of the cooling bundle.
The lamp consists of a pot 1 forming a reservoir for the hydrocarbon which is to supply the burner. This pot 1 also serves as a seat for resting the lamp. On this pot 1 and to some. distance above the latter is carried, by means of spacers 2, the threaded crown 4 of the safety lock. Nut 3 is screwed onto the thread of this crown, carrying a cover 5 intended to form a covering for the air chamber 6. This nut 3 carries colon-. net 7 forming spacers for the glass cage. These spacers 7 are secured, at their other ends, on the clamping plate 8 securing the glass 9 in position as, it will be replicated later.
On this plate 8 is fixed the armor 10 which forms the cap of the lamp and which protects the tubular safety bundle.
This breastplate 10 carries, at its upper part and externally, the ring 11 for supporting the lamp.
Ventilation openings 12 are made in the side wall of this breastplate 10.
In the side wall of the pot 1 of the lamp is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
an opening 13 is formed which is bordered by a reinforcing ring 14. This ring 14 has a boss 15 which penetrates into the pot 1 and which is provided with a threaded axial opening 1 6 forming a connection. In this connection is screwed a nozzle 17 having an axial hole 18 which communicates with the interior of the pot 1; on the one hand through side orifices 19, on the other hand via the channel 20 of a nut 21, this screwing 4 the end of the axial hole 180 This nut 21 serves to adjust the tension of an internal spring 22 which acts on a spherical valve 23. This valve 23 rests on a seat 24 formed in the axial hole 18 of the nozzle 17 so as to normally close the latter.
A closing plug 25 is screwed onto the threaded external part of the fitting 17, comprising, internally, a plastic seal 26. A chain 27 connects this plug 25 to the pot 1 of the lamp.
The pot 1 is crossed, parallel to its axis, by a tube 28. This tube 28 receives, on the outside a connector 29 allowing the connection of a rubber tube 30 or other, supplying compressed air, for the. lamp burner supply. The tube 28 comes out of the pot 1 and passes through the space 6 separating the upper part of the latter from the locking ring 4. Holes' 31 formed in the wall of this tube 28 supply the aeration chamber 6. The ube 28 has, internally, a ring 32 provided with an axial channel 33, this device forming a pressure limiter. Finally, a screen 54 made of rolled wire mesh is housed in this tube 28 which is fixed, by means of a nut 35, on a horizontal plate 36 forming the bottom of the locking ring; 4.
The tube 28 opens naturally, above said 'plate 36.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the pot 1 is disposed a filter wick 37 placed in a dip tube 38. This gasoline inlet is in connection with a spiral tube 39 which terminates in the body of a valve 40. This body is interposed between- be the upper bottom of the pot 1 and the plate 36 closing the locking ring 4. It is made up of two parts which are screwed onto each other by clamping the edge of a metal diaphragm 41 between them. the upper face of this diaphragm 41 rests a spherical valve 42 which controls the distribution channel 43.
On the lower face, the end of an operating rod 44 rests. This rod 14 which screws into the lower part of the body of the valve 40 passes through the pot 1 by means of a hollow spacer 45. The rod 14 is screwed into the lower part of the valve body 40. knurled head 46 'which allows the maneuvering of the rod 44 is housed under the lower bottom of this pot 1.
The fuel passes from the tap 40 into a connector 47, the nut 48 of which fixes, in position, the U-tube 49. This tube 49 is fixed, at its other end, by a nut 50 on the vertical branch 51 of the burner, L-shaped. On the horizontal arm 52, of the latter, which carries a side cap 53, is screwed the ejector 54 of the burner, This ejector 54 is capped by a vertical tube 55 comprising, internally, a diffusion screen 56, which divides it into two superimposed cavities; each of the latter comprising, in its wall, openings 57. This tube is surmounted by a gallery 58 provided laterally with perforations 59.
This gallery 58, which centers the sleeve .60, in addition fixes the base plate 61 on which the terminal 62 is secured in which is locked, by means of the clamping screw 63, the corresponding end of the terminal. the sleeve holder rod 64.
The upper compartment openings
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
formed in the tube 55 are in relation with the interior of an air pipe 65. This pipe 65 is, on the other hand, secured in a fitting 66 which screws into a bowl 67 belonging to the plate 36. Between the fitting,
66 and the bowl 67 are secured, by means of the spacer ring 68, superimposed screens 69.
The burner assembly described is housed inside the glass 9 which rests on the lower crown 70. The upper end of this glass 9 receives a tubular plate 71 which separates the combustion chamber from the lamp and atmosphere and which is held in place by the crown clamping plate 8.
In the plate 71 are fixed, parallel to each other, tubes 72 which open at their upper ends under a bell 73 forming a stuffer. This bell 73 is supported, axially, by a rod 74, fixing itself to the center of the tube plate 71.
The lamp thus established has two operating modes;
1. regime at atmospheric pressure.
2 - Compressed air regime.
1 .- Regime at atmospheric pressure:
The tank 1 of the lamp is filled with a hydrocarbon suitable for its proper functioning and in sufficient quantity for a determined time.
The pressure necessary to make the liquid rise from the reservoir to the burner has been obtained by, = any device using the same connection 17.
The burner is heated with a sufficient heat source to reach a temperature suitable for gasification of the liquid employed.
We open the tap 40 to turn on the lamp
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in function by turning knob 46 from right to left,
Once the lamp is on, it is assembled as shown in fig 1, ie in working order.
Its air supply will be as follows: the ejector 54 by projecting a jet of gas into the chimney 75 under high pressure will entrain the air necessary for combustion, first through the screens 69 and the pipe 65, then by the chimney 75 and under the sleeve 60 which will become incandescent. so far, the simple operation of the lamp has been achieved.
This first function is that of the suction of the air coming from the outside and the delivery, through the sleeve 60, of the air and gas mixture in determined proportions.
When this mixture has taken part in the combustion, it will be a question of expelling to the outside the products unsuitable for combustion and it is at this moment that the second function begins, that of delivery through the tube bundle 72.
On the tube plate 71 are vertically brazed capillary tubes 72 made of steel and in sufficient quantity to allow the products of the combustion to pass with enough speed for the renewal of the air to be sufficient to maintain this combustion at the same time. 'inside the sleeve 60.
These tubes 72 could also be arranged horizontally, or could consist of conduits placed in the cylindrical wall of a cap 75 with circular ribs, surmounting the spout.
The burner therefore plays the role of suction and pressure pump, sucking fresh air through the screens 69
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
fig. 2 and delivering the gases Unsuitable for combustion through the tubular system 72.
This tubular system 72 represents the safety system which does not allow the introduction of any gas through its tubes since there is a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure in the lamp.
Neither could it occur (assuming an explosion in the chamber of the lamp) that the flame produced could pass through the tube bundle 72, this being at a temperature sufficiently low for the flame. cool.
This regime at atmospheric pressure is that of the translation of the lamp to the point where a source of compressed air is available.
The lighting at this mode is (and it cannot be otherwise) very reduced because the internal circulation can only be weak, which means that in the combustion chamber, which is between the base of the glass 9 and the tube plate 71, are in suspension, gases unsuitable for combustion.
The lamp can in this state, although burning at reduced speed, operate in all positions.
2 .- Compressed air regime:
To change the speed "at atmospheric pressure" to compressed air mode, it is necessary to have an air source having sufficient pressure and flow rate to maintain the pressure constantly in tank 1 (fig. 1) and to send air under the screens 69 as well as into the chamber of the lamp itself.
The air, under sufficient pressure, will arrive by a special pipe up to connection 15; this pipe is screwed in place of the plug 25.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Once this operation is completed, the tap placed on the pipe will be opened and whenever the internal pressure of the lamp is lower than that of the pipe (a fact which will occur as a result of the lowering of the level of the hydrocarbon) the compressed air will push the ball 23 against the action of its spring 22 suitably adjusted and will be introduced inside until equilibrium is re-established between the two pressures.
The compressed air flow is almost zero, since its function is only static in the tank.
A second air inlet will be via tube 28.
The air circulating in this tube will feed the burner through the holes 31 arranged in a circle, then the interior of the lamp passing through the network of screens 34.
Holes 31 and 33 are calibrated to allow sufficient air to pass through for the lamp to operate as if fully open with the sleeve burning at atmospheric pressure.
The combustion, with the addition of a circulation of fresh air at a pressure much higher than atmospheric pressure, will aim to enrich the flame with the desired quantity of oxygen and to activate the circulation through the gas. safety tube bundle 72 by lowering its temperature.
The essential characteristic of this system therefore consists in obtaining, by the use of compressed air judiciously distributed in a safety mine lamp 4 pressurized gasoline and Incandescent sleeve, a much higher lighting than that provided by this same.
