<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The device. ceiling support beam comprises a T-section beam A or a U-section beam Al, one or the other of these beams being reinforced by one or more B cables and carried by E uprights. this effect amounts.ordinaires larch or metal tubes which will be described more fully below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the case of an A-beam with a T-section, the uprights have vertical slots at the top to receive the a-flange of the beam as shown in fig. 18, and in the case of a beam A1 with a U-shaped section, the top of each upright engages between the flanges a1.
The T-section beam A shown in fig. 3 to 6 is reinforced by two separate cables B, arranged on each side of the wing a. Each cable B is held at the end by a block C adapting to the end of the T-beam and drilled with holes flared outwards and the smallest diameter of which is substantially equal to the diameter of the cable B. Each end of cable B is introduced into an opening and is opened out: reopening is then filled with an alloy or a suitable metal such as molten white metal, so that after cooling the ends of the cable are firmly fixed to the block .
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 show a beam A1 with a U-section reinforced by a single cable B. Cable B is held at each end by a block C which fits to the end of the beam and has a flared opening towards outside and whose smallest diameter is substantially equal to the diameter of the cable B. Each end of the cables B is introduced into an opening and is open: the opening is then filled with a suitable alloy such as white metal of such so that by cooling the cable ends are fixed to the block.
Figs, 10 and 11 represent a beam A1 with a U-section reinforced by two cables B, each cable
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
being held at its ends by a block 0 adapting to the end of the beam, the cables being fixed in flared openings made in the blocks in a manner similar to that which has been indicated with regard to fig, 8, 9 and 10.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in fig, 12 to 16 the beam A with section under Test reinforced by a single cable B which passes along the wing a and on either side of this one. A block D is fixed to one end of the beam and this block has a groove c1 on the outside through which the cable B passes. A block C fixed to the other end of the beam has two flared openings c to receive the ends. of the cable B which is maintained as has been described with reference to FIGS. 8, 9 and 10.
Although the drawings show a T or U-beam reinforced by one or two cables, it is obvious that the invention is not limited to the use of one or two cables and that cables can be employed. in any number.
In figs 17 to 20 there is shown an upright for supporting the ends of the beam A or A1. The upright consists of a hollow tube E with a vertical slot E1 extending from the bottom up to a certain height, When the upright E is to be used with a beam A with a T section, two diametrically opposed slots e are made at the top of the tube to receive the flange of the beam. These slots are not necessary when the upright is used with a U-beam as in this case the end of the upright fits
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
between the flanges A1 of the visible beam fig, 24.
Instead of extending to the bottom of tube E as in fig. 17 and 18 the slot El may terminate at a small distance from the lower end of the tube as shown in fig. 22.
If there is an advantage in reducing the diameter of the opening existing at the bottom of the tube, a metal collar F having an opening f of smaller diameter than the internal diameter of the tube E will be used, this collar being adapted to the tube. When fitted to an E-tube having an E1 slot extending to the bottom, the collar '3? may have a vertical slot f1 wedge helping with the bottom of the slot El as shown in fig. 17, 18, 19 and 29.
A collar similar to the collar F can be fitted to the top of the E-tube if desired, so as to increase the external diameter of the tube which enters between the flanges of the U-beam. A post formed by a hollow tube E with a slot vertical El does not bend when excessive pressure is applied to the top of the upright, but it sinks into the ground and the latter enters the tube. We can appreciate the depth which the tube has sunk thanks to the level reached inside the tube and for this purpose a graduation is provided on the side of the slot El, which makes it possible to immediately see the distance whose ceiling has fallen since the amount was put in place.
, A device according to the invention has several advantages over other steel uprights and sleepers. It is less heavy, more manageable and cannot
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
be moved by the transport bins circulating in the main galleries, in addition to indicating the lowering of the ceiling 3, the uprights conforming to the invention are non-flammable and therefore provide more security than the wooden uprights. particularly useful in cases where mine fires are to be feared.
For equal strength, the beams produced according to the invention have smaller dimensions than ordinary steel or wooden beams and they make it possible to give the galleries a greater width.
