<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
de D (distance axe manoeuvre,) augmentée. Il est vrai que H (hau- toux de la serrure) se trouve faiblement agrandi, mais cette augmentation insignifiante, n'affecte pas la solidité du montante étant donné que H' de la fig.2, malgré son augmentation compa- rativement à H de la figl;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Une forme préférée de la section droite du palastre sera constituée de deux demi-cercles raccordés par des parties droi- tes. L'invention est de plus caractérisée : le) par le dispositif de montage sur l'axe de commande de la serrure, du pignon ou du secteur servant à produire le dé- placement du pêne;
2 ) par Inorganisation des bouchons qui ferment latérale- ment les palaetres et qui servent de guides à l'axe et au pi- gnon de commande;

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Alexandre VAUGEAN, Engineer, residing in Paris, 15 Ru7e Thécdule Ribot, louse: "Special lock".
The object of the present invention is a larding or recessed locking device which can be applied either to the establishment of a bolt, or of a lever lock, or of a safety lock without a key.
The invention responds to a real need, all the strains currently used requiring, to be mounted, a location much larger than the width of the usual uprights. Unable to be housed in the uprights, the running locks are placed in the joint of the central cross member with the upright, the strength of which they fail.
Moreover, modern architecture tends to eliminate these central crosspieces, which cut: necessarily the doors at the same height and thus prevent a piaf rational construction and the possibility of a varied decoration or the installation of window nails in the room. most illuminating region of the litter.
Several manufacturers have remedied the difficulties

resulting from the great length of the locks, by arranging their parts in height instead of having them in width. this
EMI2.1
The vertical movement only displaces the difficulty, because by exaggerating the height we cut the upright over a large area in its middle, o ', that is to say on the part which tires the most, and as the thickness of the usual locks is very strong in relation to the actual thickness of the upright, one ends up deteriorating the upright which one is then obliged to arm with closed metal plates.
Another disadvantage of closed vertical locks is that the axis of the operating elements (handles or keys) is located so close to the edges of the doors that the handles or keys can be turned without danger to fingers, so that the convenience of The service of a door is ensured, it is necessary that for any length of the lock, the distance from the edge of the door to the axis of operation is such that the fingers can be placed at ease.

of D (maneuver axis distance) increased. It is true that H (height of the lock) is slightly enlarged, but this insignificant increase does not affect the solidity of the riser given that H 'of fig. 2, despite its increase compared to H of figl;
still lower than the lock heights? usual .. It is obvious that there exists an optimum value of 'angle,!. formed by the axis of the bolt with the horizontal for any given value of L, H and D.
The Inclined bolt therefore offers a first major advantage. It offers others:
The resistance of a lock being, with regard to the bolt, equal to the resistance of the section parallel to the upright carrying the strike, it follows that the inclined bolt which offers a resistance section greater than the corresponding section of a bolt engaging normally, the strike. It follows that we can reduce Basa Disadvantage the thickness = of the bolt and consequently the total thickness of the palastre! without reducing the effective resistance of the bolt.
By decreasing the section of the palas- tre, the width of the mortise or notch to be made in the wood to mount the lock is correspondingly reduced, and it results in the possibility of using $ locks established con- formally to the Inventive in thick hand woods.
The main characteristic of the present invention consists in the use of a rack bolt controlled by a toothed pinion and disposed obliquely in a palestra the reduced section of which strictly offers the material necessary for housing it. the angle of inclination of the rack bolt, the shape of the various organs, as well as the spatial relationships between these organs, are established so as to produce a special lock whose length, height and thickness allow it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
to be easily built-in and in which the distance from the control pins is large enough to allow the convenient service of either handles or keys.
A preferred form of the cross section of the palastre will consist of two semicircles connected by straight parts. The invention is further characterized: the) by the device for mounting on the control axis of the lock, the pinion or the sector serving to produce the movement of the bolt;
2) by the lack of organization of the plugs which close the palaeters laterally and which serve as guides for the axis and the control pinion;
3) by the combination with the aforementioned devices of a method of mounting the operating handle on its axis, this mounting being made using an eccentric part ensuring a very effective fixing in any position. them the control shaft without the help of any pin.
The invention further comprises numerous construction details such as: The use of a keeper with an oval hole.
In the construction of a keyless safety lock, a bolt with two racks of different lengths following one another in the horizontal plane, the control axis being formed of two supporting sections respectively a fixed pinion and a ratchet pinion , which act on the bolt independently and respectively under the action of each of the handles, the longer rack ensuring the bolt two successive strokes in the closing direction, the shorter rack ensuring only one stroke return of the bolt to the open position.
The invention also consists in the application of the construction details described below, in locks of the same type but which include a horizontal bolt.

Considered Figures 3 to 15, the bolt comprises the keep 1 with housing of ovalized bolt or not, the palastre 2, the bolt 3 with cut rack forming a stop at the end of races, a spring 4 housed in an annular groove of the bolt, a pinion

control 5, a pinion guide bush 6 at the same time wedging the palastre in its housing and an operating button force-fitted on the pinion shaft 5.
The palastre is made up of a block of metal, of suitable profile, suitably drilled in two perpendicular directions to form the housing of the bolt and elected from the control members. the housing of the bolt is inclined to the horizontal according to the most favorable angle and the cross section of the block is reduced to the point of strictly offering sufficient material to drill the said housing,
A preferred form of this section will consist of two semicircles connected by straight lines so as to allow the establishment of the housing of the lock in the uprights or frame using the drill bit according to the sketched detail. matic shown in fig. 33. The mortise can be executed quickly,
while being of a perfect finish, after removing to the birds the edges left by the parts removed with the drill. However, it should be understood that other sections offering the same reduced thickness could be used for the formation of the palastre. In the case of the bolt, the housing of the bolt will be formed by a perfectly cylindrical borehole and the spring 4, housed in an annular groove of the bolt, will form a brake on the wall of the housing, so as to be able to apply the bolt in any desired position. The transverse orifice normally made in the plane of the palastre will be threaded over its entire length, so as to allow the screwing of the stopper 6 in any faoe of the door or of the frame to be furnished.
Considering Figures 16 to 36, the barrel lock likewise comprises the strike with oval housing or not, the palastre of reduced section 2 and the inclined bolt 3. The housing
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
of the bolt in the palastre 'has two cylindrical boreholes of different diameter, while the bolt also has a part of larger diameter, part which will re-engage in the opposite Bâcha. Between the shoulder of the housing and that of the bolt is housed the coil spring 12 which surrounds the bolt.
The bolt rack is controlled by a toothed sector 7, wedged on a control shaft 9,
The particular shape given to the palastre makes it possible precisely to use a toothed sector of large diameter for the control of the bolt, because this arrangement makes it possible to increase the distance available from axis to axis between the bolt and the rotary member. control. The large diameter given to the actuator decreases the amplitude of the rotational movement necessary to produce the linear displacement of the bolt.
The control shaft 9 will include an eccentric part 10 which engages in a cylindrical housing of the same profile formed in the button or crutch and a rotation of the axis 9, relative to said button, makes it possible to fix these two elements one on the other with sufficient adhesion to the proposed goal and without requiring other wedging means, the key 11 can be taken in the same mass of the control shaft and will preferably have a cylindrical profile. - that, so as to allow easy assembly of the elements. to obtain this result,
the toothed sector is housed in a recess made in the normal plane of the palastre and guided by the rear collar provided for this purpose and by a closing plug which fits seamlessly into the circular location. Said plug 8 is fixed using screws taking half in the palastre, half in the plug, the arrangement being such that the plug will present its central passage in the position appropriate to that of the control sector 7:.
Considering Figures 37 to 61, the keyless safety lock similarly includes the reduced section keeper 1, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
palace of special shape 2 and the bolt 3 housed in a shoulder borehole to allow the interposition of the return spring 12 between said shoulder and a shoulder of the bolt itself.
The bolt has two racks of different lengths, located in the same plane, as shown in Figures 37 and 40. The long rack is used to give the bolt an additional stroke extended in the direction of closing, then that the rack of shorter length is used to print a single backward stroke, therefore opening. the two buttons of the lock serve separately to transmit each of these movements at the discretion of the operator.
The control members consist of two pinions, one extending the axle section, the other being a roohet pinion mounted at the end of a second axle section. The two sections engage telescopically one into the other over a certain distance, so as to form by their coupling an undeformable and rigid control shaft, but remain independent as regards the rotational movement of the two control pins which they include and which are contiguous in their normal mounting position.
the shaft section 16 therefore carries the fixed pinion, however, the shaft section 17 carries a ratchet pinion 19 wedged between a fixed collar 23 and a ring 22 force-fitted on the side opposite to said pinion. ratchet 19. The roohet wheel 19 will be constituted by a toothed crown with re-in front in which engage the latching noses 20 housed in a diametral bore of the axis 17. a coil spring 21 being introduced between the two nozzles 20 so as to keep them apart. The ratchet wheel is engaged with the shorter rack and the fixed pinion with the longer rack.
Said pinions with their axis are housed in an orifice normally made in the palastre and guided by two plugs 26 and 27, which can both be screwed on
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
in the material of the palaestra or one of which is screwed into the palaestra, while the other is screwed onto a corresponding thread of the first stopper. Since, however, the drive pinions and the rack should be centered with respect to the bolt housing and immediately secured in the desired position, mechanical devices should be provided to center the two plugs in their exact position.
This mechanical device could comprise, for example, a conical pin 24 intended to house a ball 25 in a recess distributed halfway over the two plugs 26 and 27. the assembly will therefore include the housing of said ball in the socket. obviously, this operation comprising some trial and error which ensures the position of the two plugs with respect to each other and the position of their whole relative to the housing of the bolt.
The construction can provide collars or shoulders outside the guide plugs which at the same time ensure the wedging of the lock in the wood of the upright or the frame; similarly, these plugs could have screw collars on to tighten / the wood of the upright or the frame.
In a preferred embodiment, the bolt will pass through one of the caps at 28 so as to constitute a pin which prevents unscrewing of the caps, this arrangement, completed by the pin wedging 24 conical with or without ball, forming a security plot by immobilizing all the elements in their respective operating positions. the return spring 12 therefore ensures the return of the bolt in its first closing stroke, but the fixed pinion 18 enables a second stroke to be imparted to said bolt in the same direction by further compressing the spring 12. This stroke engages the bolt. bolt at the bottom of the keeper and at the same time causes the disengagement of the ratchet pinion 19 of the short-length rack.
It is therefore no longer possible to act on the bolt with the button or the handle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
corresponding to said roohet pinion 19. The other button or handle allows the bolt to be brought back a distance equal to this elongated stroke and at the end of this stroke the shorter rack engages the pinion at ratchet.
At this time, the bolt can therefore be controlled by the two buttons against the action of the spring 1. However, it is necessary to provide devices to keep the bolt in this relative position and these means are practically constituted. - only by diametrically opposed longitudinal grooves 15
EMI12.1
and made in the large diameter borehole of the housing of the bolt shoulders .. these grooves have at their ends / for the balls 13 housed in a diametral borehole of the bolt and the interposition of a spring 14 tending to expel the balls 13 from their housing - is lying. The balls 13 engage in the grooves 15 and therefore form a stop for the bolt on the shoulders at the end of the grooves 15.
A practical way to obtain these grooves is to make an additional bore of the first cylindrical bore in its region corresponding to the second stroke of the long rack.
In the second elongated closing stroke of the bolt, the balls are forced into their housing and only exert a braking action on the walls of the housing of this part of the bolt.
The shape chosen for the palastre facilitates the machining of the locks, because it makes it possible to perform the threads intended to receive the guide plugs on flat parts and not on curved surfaces. Bous the internal components of the lock are effectively protected and made inaccessible, which greatly contributes to making fraudulent opening impossible or at least difficult.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
The operation of the locks - * mainly the safety lock, can be made inaudible as long as one chooses, for example, special materials for the balls 13 which engage in the shoulders formed by the grooves 15. As material we can point out backelite, fiber, leather, etc. Finally, the lock forms a solid, compact and resistant unit, the assembly of which is practical and simple.
The inclined position of the bolt makes it possible to adapt the lock to all possible applications, in particular to doors with circular development, to sliding doors, for example to American offices, or to doors sliding on any curve *
The invention further comprises the application of all the construction details as regards the palastre and the control members, horizontal bolt locks.
The:
Figures 62 to 67 clearly illustrate this application with this variant that in the safety lock, figs. 64 and 65, the guide plugs are both screwed into the material of the palastre, while a slightly secant broehe ensures the position of the plugs respectively relative to each other and relative to the normal position of the active members of the lock.
The present invention is not simply limited to the embodiments described and illustrated, but extends to any construction comprising variations in the inclination of the bolt and in the various active elements of the locks.
