<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Saddle foot
The invention relates to a method and device for manufacturing a saddle post for bicycles or similar vehicles consisting of a single rectangular piece.
Up to now, the machining by stamping of the so-called saddle feet was done in several operations, the edges of the part were first bent, then after having moved the part on the die, we proceeded to the bending of the part. middle part of this room.
After stamping of the sjlle foot proper, it was still necessary to operate the stamping of the head of the saddle foot.
The object of the invention is to reduce the number of these displacements by simplifying the method of manufacturing the saddle foot.
In the method according to the invention, the longitudinal edges of a part of generally rectangular appearance are brought opposite one another by bending the part during
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a single stamping operation.
The invention further provides that the wings formed by means of a longitudinal indentation formed in the middle of the transverse side of said part are bent in two stamping operations. The part of the flanges adjacent to the part is bent in a first operation, the edges of the aforesaid flanges being brought together during a second stamping operation.
The blasting of the edges thus brought closer to the longitudinal sides and the wings of the aforementioned part can in particular be carried out by welding or brazing,
The invention also relates to the device for manufacturing the aforesaid feet,
Under the action of a concave punch, the rectangular part is wound around a cylindrical mandrel placed in the cylindrical bottom of an excavation of the die so as to take the form of a cylinder.
The inclination of the head of the saddle foot relative to the latter is achieved by placing the cylindra in an orifice disposed obliquely with respect to the surface of a second die, the partiē. ; adjacent to the workpiece the scalloped transverse side emerging from the orifice cat is first bent by means of a cylindrical punch cooperating with a cylindrical ramp of the surface of the die. After removing the first punch, the edges of said wings are bent during a second operation by means of a punch with a concave face and provided with two ramps guided by corresponding ramps of the die,
The accompanying drawings show by way of example

and not limiting the embodiments of the invention.
This extends to the various original features included in the arrangement shown.
Fig.l shows the part cut from a sheet metal side.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view with vertical section showing the part in one of its positions during the first stamping operation,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the part after the first operation.
Fig.4 is a view of the die, the first punch and the part housed in the oblique hole before the bending of the part of the flanges adjacent to the part. pig.5 is a perspective view of the second punch. pig.6 is a perspective view of the saddle foot manufactured according to the invention.
The saddle foot 4, as shown in fig. 6, is obtained starting from a part such as 2 (fig.l), generally rectangular in shape and of a width appropriate to the diameter of the saddle foot cut from a sheet metal strip. The formation of the head 4a of the foot 4 will be carried out in the manner described below by bringing the edges 2a and 2b of the wings 2m and 2n together, formed by the notch 2g of triangular shape. in the middle of the transverse side (2a 2b). This side is formed by two straight lines 2a and 2b forming an obtuse angle with the direction of the longitudinal sides 2t oriented towards the other transverse side. 2 F .
Side notches 2h are also provided on the part of the longitudinal sides 2t adjacent to the side
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
transverse (2a, 2b).
The bending of the foot 4 is ensured in a single stamping operation by bringing the edges 2t of the part 2 directly opposite each other. For this purpose (fig.2) the part 2 rests by one of its sides 2t on the mandrel
3m placed in the cylindrical bottom 3g of an excavation
3a formed in the die 3 and is supported by the other side 2t against the concave wall 3p of a punch 3k capable of penetrating into the excavation 3a.
The winding of the part 2 around the mandrel 3m is carried out under the thrust of the punch 3k so that the edges 2t come opposite so as to form a tube.
After this stamping operation, the part 2 which has become tubular (fig.3), removed from the excavation 3a, is placed in an orifice 5a of the die 5 (fig.4).
The inclination of the head 4a relative to the longitudinal axis of the foot 4 is achieved by the fact that this orifice is disposed obliquely in the die 5, the indented part or the wings 2m and 2n emerging from said orifice 5a. The stamping of the head 4a is obtained by first bending the sections 4b of the aforesaid wings by means of a punch 5k approximately, in the shape of a T and the cylindrical body of which is disposed approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. of the orifice 5a cooperates with an equally cylindrical ramp 5m of the projecting parts 5s of the die 5. The vertical branch of the T which constitutes this punch is intended to ensure the guiding thereof by penetrating into the part 2 which has become tubular.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Once the sections 4b are bent, the punch 5k is withdrawn from the orifice 5a and replaced by another punch 5g, shown in FIG. 5, intended to bring the edges 2b and 2a together. These edges engage the concave surface. and cylindrical 5p of the punch 5g, the generatrices of which are parallel to the projections 5s. The punch 5g is guided by ramps 5r of said projections 5s cooperating with corresponding ramps 5t of the punch, when this punch 5g is pressed on the die 5.
A greater resistance of the saddle foot is achieved by assembling by electric or autogenous welding or by brazing the edges 2b and 2a as well as 2t of the pressed saddle foot 4.
