<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Figs.

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements to cutters and similar machines.
This invention relates to cutting machines and similar machines and its aim is to improve these machines so as to enable them in particular to cut with the same ease materials of different hardnesses, without excessive wear of the cutting teeth. We know that in current cutters, the rotational speeds of the cutting members are practically standardized for all types of materials to be cut regardless of their degree of -

hardness and if, due to the excessive wear of the cutting teeth, the speed has to be changed, one is obliged to remove the gears from the machine and replace them with others to change the speed. These maneuvers are long and difficult and very impractical to carry out at the waist.
According to the invention, a speed change is arranged in the length direction of the machine comprising a median shaft mounted between the motor and the pivoting head, and two lateral shafts which cooperate with the median shaft and are mounted on either side of it.
The median shaft can be actuated by the engine and drives the side shafts which are then extended to the front of the swivel head housing where they are provided with spur gears actuating a countershaft which, in turn, ac - operates the usual vertical shaft controlling the cutters of the bar or chain type. According to a variant, the lateral shafts actuated directly by the motor can drive, by means of appropriate gears, the median shaft provided at its front end with a bevel gear to actuate the vertical shaft controlling the cutters.
In both cases, the mechanism is very compact and meets the requirements of the machines in question, the height of which is strictly limited. As the driving forces are supported by two groups of gears, one on each side shaft, very small dimensions can be given to the teeth of the pinions and to the pinions themselves.
In the accompanying drawings, which show by way of example two embodiments of the present invention:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively vertical sectional and horizontal sectional views of a swivel head and the associated speed change in a bar chopper, the sections being made by lines A-B and C-D respectively.
Figs. 3 and 4 are similar sections of another construction, by the lines E-F and G-H respectively.
In the drawings, 1 designates the motor shaft, 2 the casing of the pivoting head and 3 the cutter bar which is actuated by the motor shaft via the usual bevel gears 4,5, the toothed wheel 6 and of the gear change comprising the median shaft 7, and the two side shafts 8, 8 'mounted parallel thereto.
In the construction shown in Figs.
1 and 2, the pinion 9 wedged on the motor shaft 1 is located substantially in the longitudinal axis of the cutter and is mounted in a cantilever beyond the motor bearing (not shown). A pinion 10 in mesh with the motor pinion 9 is mounted above it on the end of the median shaft 7 which rotates in bearings 11 located at each end of a small housing 12 surrounding the gear change. . The side shafts 8, 8 'are supported at the front end 13 of the casing 2 of the pivoting head and pass from each side of the vertical shaft 14 which is made in one piece, with the bevel gears 5, 6 At their ends, the shafts 8, 8 'carry spur gears 15, 15' which mesh with an intermediate spur gear 16 wedged on a median countershaft 17.
This carries a bevel gear 37 which engages with bevel gear 6.
The gear change shown can give three different speeds and it includes, at each end-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
mity side shafts 8, 8 ', fixed gears 18, 18' and 19, 19 'and, between these, sliding gears 20, 20' capable of sliding on ribbed parts of these lateral shafts. A pinion 21 which is in constant mesh with the pinions 18, 18 ', and this shaft also carries a sliding gear comprising pinions 22 and 23 intended to engage respectively with the pinions 20, is mounted on the median shaft 7. , 20 'and 19, 19' of the side shafts. This player is also provided with clutch claws 24 intended to engage with claws 25 of pinion 21.
The sliding gear of the shaft 7 is controlled by a transverse rod 26 by means of a pinion 27 and a rack 28 carrying a fork 29 controlling the pinions 22, 23.
Likewise, the 'sliding gears 20, 20' of the shafts 8, 8 'are controlled together by a rod 30 using pinions 31,31' of racks 32, 321 and forks 33, 33 '. The ends of the rods 26, 30 are cut to sides at 34, 35 so that a suitable key or control crankshaft can be fitted.
It is understandable that we can thus obtain three speeds, namely: by bringing the pinion 23 into engagement with the wheels 19, 19 '(as shown in Fig. 2), by engaging the claws 24 of the player 22, 23 with the claws 25 of the pinion 21 (the slide 22, 23 - being. fully. pushed to the left), and by putting the pinion 22 in mesh with the pinions 20, 20 '(the slide 22, 23 and the pinions 20, 20' being moved approximately halfway between the wheels 18, 18 'and 19, 19').
Still other series of speeds can be obtained by changing spur gears 16, 15, 15 'and replacing them with other gears. This can be done easily by simply removing the cover 36, while in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In current machines, different speeds could only be obtained by replacing the pinions 4, 5, 6, which necessitated the dismantling of the entire swivel head.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a modified construction in which, unlike the previous example, the two side shafts 8, 8 'are controlled directly by the motor, using the pinion 9 mounted on the shaft 1, spur gears 40 , 41 mounted on an auxiliary shaft 39 and pinions 42, 42 'mounted on the side shafts 8, 8'.
The other parts of the gear change are similar to those described above but, in this case, the side shafts actuate the median shaft 7 and the latter directly carries the bevel gear 37 which meshes with the bevel gear 6 of the swivel head. . This construction is a little simpler and less expensive than that which was first described, but it only allows the series of speeds determined by the change of speed to be obtained.
Of course, the construction of the gear change and the arrangement of parts could be changed without departing from the present invention.
