<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

'Articulation for manhole cover' The subject of the present invention is a connecting articulation between the frame of a manhole cover and the buffer, allowing the pivoting of the buffer and the removal of the buffer only if the latter is pivoted and is located in an approximately vertical position.
European patent 0 391 826 describes a manhole cover with hinge consisting of a frame and a buffer. The pad has a protruding pivot intended to be engaged in a housing made in the frame.
The pad can pivot around the pivot axis to a maximum open position without any risk of inadvertent closing.
The pivot does not, however, ensure complete closure of the pad on the frame.
The present invention more particularly relates to a tampon articulation having a great robustness, allowing the removal of the tampon only in vertical position and ensuring in combination with the weight of the tampon the complete positive closure of the tampon on the frame.
The articulation axis is constituted by a cylindrical axis integral with the ends of the vertical walls of a housing made in the frame. This axis has a cylindrical central part provided with a vertical flat between two completely cylindrical parts.
The tampon comprises a part of the articulation in the form of a projecting fork coming to be placed around the axis of articulation. This fork has two arms, one of which is straight and is in the upper position when the pad is closed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The lower arm is curved towards the first arm in such a way that the space between the two arms at their ends has a dimension less than the diameter of the articulation axis but greater than the measurement of the diameter of the articulation axis , minus the arrow on the flat.
This arrangement ensures a positive positioning of the buffer with respect to the frame in almost all positions and especially in the position close to the horizontal but not in the vertical position.
The pad can therefore only be removed from the frame when it is in the vertical position only, while during the approach movement towards the horizontal position, the pad is positively positioned and falls into place in its seat in the frame.
The upwardly curved lower arm encircles part of the hinge pin. If the pad is lifted out of the frame, either by the pressure of the water under the pad, or by the passage of a vehicle, it will always fall back without deviation to its exact location. The characteristics and advantages will appear in the description which follows, given solely by way of example, made with reference to the appended drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a top view of the trapdoor.
Figure 1 is a top view of the gaze.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of part of the tampon.
Figure 3 is a side view of the portion of the hinge integral with the pad.
Figure 4 is a front view of the hinge integral with the pad.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the hinge.
Figure 6 is a front view of the pivot axis.
Figure 7 is a top view of the pivot axis.
The manhole is composed of the movable buffer 1 placed in a circular frame 2 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
can pivot around a joint. The frame 2 shown here as an example is circular, but can be of any other shape adapted to the shape of the pad 1.
The joint has two components. A fork 4 is integral with the pad 1 and is placed radially on the circumference of the pad 1. It has an upper and straight arm 5 and a lower arm 6 bent upwards. Between these two arms 5 and 6 is provided a bore 7. An inlet 8 leads to this bore. The dimension of this inlet is less than the diameter of bore 7.
The frame 2 is provided with a housing 9 in which the axis 10 is placed, forming the second part of the articulation. As can be seen in FIGS. 6 and 7, the pivot axis 10 is fixed at its two ends to the side walls 11 and 12 of the housing 9.
In the middle, the axis 10 has a vertical flat surface 13, extending over part of the length of the axis 10. The transverse dimension 14 of the axis 10 in the horizontal direction is less than the transverse dimension of the axis 10 in the vertical direction and corresponds with a slight play to the dimension of the inlet 8 between the two parts 5 and 6.
The vertical dimension 15 of the axis 10 is greater than the dimension of the inlet 8 between the two parts 5 and 6.
During assembly, the pad 1 is placed in a vertical position above the pivot axis 10 and lowered until the two parts 5 and 6 slide on the axis 10.
The pad 1 is then pivoted to the horizontal rest position in the frame 2. In this position, the two parts partially encircle the axis 10 and the curved edge 12 of the lower projection 6 prevents any horizontal displacement of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
pad 1 during an untimely and limited lifting out of the frame 2. In the vertical or almost vertical position of the pad 1, it is possible to remove it.
For the visit, it is possible to tilt the buffer 1 beyond the vertical position.
The pad 1 will then be held in this position by gravity and there is no risk of untimely closing.
When the buffer is closed, it rests entirely on the circular edge of the frame 2 by means of a circular joint. In this position, the pivot axis 10 is not subject to any stress.
