<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DESCRIPTION Internally cooled roller for continuous casting installation
The invention relates to an internally cooled roller for a continuous casting installation, in particular a support and guide roller, with an envelope connected to and surrounding a core of ferrous material.
In the technique of continuous casting, there is a long-sought objective, which consists, apart from increasing the flow rate of casting, to manage to do without secondary cooling of the outgoing bar by sprinkling water, with the disadvantages that the latter brings, such as for example cracking of the edges. A proposal along these lines is disclosed in the old patent DE-PS 12 20 972. This document relates to an indirect cooling device for the bar emerging from the continuous casting mold. The bar is compressed by springs and cooled and guided by sliding shoes and guide cylinders traversed by a network of coolant. The sliding shoes and the guide cylinders are arranged alternately one behind the other in the direction of continuous casting.
The role of the guide cylinders is to equalize the surface of the bar again after the sliding pads have passed over the area. The deformation of the skin of the bar which is associated therewith leads in particular in the case of castings in the format of slabs to segregation at the angles and to internal cracks.
Another patent document, DE 32 31 433 C2 discloses a support and / or transport cylinder. The transport cylinder consists of a steel core and a steel sleeve surrounding the core and which is connected to the core. A coolant channel is hollowed out in the surface of the core and is connected by
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
coolant connections that are located in the core bearing hubs. The sleeve is welded to the remaining webs of the core between the coolant channels, over the entire length of their contacting surfaces facing each other. The welding of the sleeve and the core over all of their contact surfaces gives rise to a cylinder of stable shape.
It is then possible to slightly reduce the diameter of the cylinder and therefore at the same time the spacing between the individual cylinders. The bulge of the bar can be reduced. However, with the reduction in diameter, the effective heat transfer area of the cylinders in linear contact with the bar is also reduced. As a result, in conjunction with the low thermal conductivity of the steel sleeve, if the secondary cooling of the bar is dispensed with, the flow rate must be reduced.
As the rollers are also subjected to high wear by the bar, both if the bar is pulled through the rollers and if it is transported by motor rollers, care has been taken to use materials for the roller sleeves. as resistant to wear as possible. The state of the art (Stahl und Eisen 105 (85) Nr. 22 page 1173) indicates that for rolls for continuous casting, for example 21 Cr Mo V 5 11, for the core, and an alloy steel with 12 to 15% chromium, for a wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant coating, are considered to be particularly advantageous materials.
The object of the invention is to create a roll of stable shape with internal cooling and high thermal conductivity, which at the same time has a simple construction method.
This object is, in the case of an internally cooled roller for a continuous casting installation, achieved in that the casing is made of copper or a copper alloy.
According to the invention, the use of copper or copper alloys for the envelope serving as a heat exchange wall between the cooling agent and the bar provides a roller with high thermal conductivity. The heat to be extracted from the bar is, due to the high thermal conductivity of the copper casing, distributed over the circumference of the casing. The profile
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Radial temperature in the envelope is more regular, and consequently the thermal expansion constraints and the cyclic thermal stresses during each rotation are low, unlike a steel envelope of low thermal conductivity. Due to the reduction in thermal stresses, and despite lower values of the strength of the envelope, the roller turns out to be of stable shape.
The bar is therefore not subjected to disadvantageous deformations following the rotation of rollers which have become non-circular following slowdowns during operation. It is also possible to manufacture rolls of relatively small diameter, due to their shape stability. Thanks to the small diameter, it is possible to reduce the difference between the successive rollers in the direction of advancement of the casting and therefore optimize the guidance of the bar. Although the heat exchange surface between the roller and the bar is reduced with the reduction in diameter, it is possible with the roller according to the invention, and because of the high thermal conductivity of the envelope of copper or an alloy of copper without secondary cooling, even for slab formats.
The rollers according to the second document mentioned achieve a solidification factor of 24.6 mm / minO-5 without water spraying and 26.4 mm / min'S with water spraying. With the rollers according to the invention these values are raised to at least 26.0
EMI3.1
mm / minO, 5 without water spray and at 28. 0 mm / minO, 5 with water spray. This leads, by the possibility of increasing the casting speeds, to an increase in the capacity of the installations.
In addition, due to its high thermal conductivity, the roller according to the invention does not heat up as much as the rollers with a steel casing. This leads to a reduction in sensitivity to thermal cracking, an increase in wear resistance and a reduction in the risk of welding the casing of the roll with the casting in the event of the bar breaking. The roller also proves to be particularly resistant to corrosion, in particular to the foot roller and to the immediately following support and guide rollers, where as a result of the spraying of water aggressive slag appears.
The connection of the envelope to the core produced by fine adjustment and in particular by assembly by contraction represents a simple constructive solution. Advantageously, there is no peeling of the mantle out of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the core following thermal elongation during operation, thanks to the high thermal conductivity of the mantle. This provides reliable guidance of the coolant in the channels, and without leaks. In addition, the envelope / core connection makes it possible to fix the envelope to the core only on one edge, in particular by fixing by welding. It is obviously also possible to weld the envelope to the core on the two edges.
The invention is explained below using a drawing.
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of a roll with a spiral coolant channel. The roller essentially consists of a core 1 of ferrous material and of an envelope 2, surrounding the core 1, of copper or a copper alloy. The envelope 2 is fixed to the core 1 by fine adjustment, and in particular by assembly by contraction. In addition, the casing 2 is, at least on one of its edges 3, fixed to the core 1 by a connection by welding 4. It is obvious that other methods of fixing, for example by screwed stops, are also possible. In the surface of the core t is machined a channel of cooling agent 5 with one or more conduits, in the form of a spiral groove developing in the longitudinal direction L of the core 1.
The coolant channel 5 is covered with the tubular casing 2. In the vicinity of the edges 3 of the casing 2, the coolant channel 5 is connected to connections 7 to the coolant by drilled conduits 6 extending radially. The connections 7 to the cooling agent are arranged concentrically with the core 1 and with the bearing hubs 8 which are connected to it. The half diameter of the roller is represented by the measurement D and is in the range of about 80 to 400 mm. The wall thickness of the envelope, d, is at least 5 mm and can rise up to around 70 mm in the case of large diameter rollers.
The invention is actually described using a roller with a spiral coolant channel, but it can also be applied to rollers with any shape of the coolant channels (e.g. channels extending radially or axially, channels in the form of grooves machined in the envelope or partially in the envelope and in the core).
