<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DESCRIPTION Roller with internal cooling for a continuous casting installation and method for its production The invention relates to a roller with internal cooling for a continuous casting installation, in particular a support and guide roll, with an envelope connected to a core of ferrous material and surrounding this core, and with a protection against wear surrounding the envelope. as well as a process for its manufacture.
In continuous casting installations. the rollers and in particular the drive rollers and the rollers in direct contact with the shell are exposed to high wear by the hot rod. For this reason, much research has been undertaken in the past with a view to optimizing the wear resistance of the rollers.
Japanese document Sho-52-40608 discloses a roll for continuous casting with a core. an envelope surrounding the core and an additional wear protection envelope surrounding the envelope. The envelope and the core are made of copper, a copper and nickel alloy, a copper and aluminum alloy or aluminum. The corrosion protection casing is made of steel or cast iron, and is connected to the casing in particular by an assembly by contraction.
This document effectively discloses the basic assembly consisting of surrounding the core of a roller for continuous casting of a copper casing and of protecting the latter against wear by a second casing, but the heat transfer is reduced by the steel or cast iron enclosure with conductivity
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
thermal is lower than that of copper. In addition, the necessary wall thickness, for reasons of solidity during assembly by contraction of the steel or cast iron envelope, has a negative influence on the heat transfer.
German publication DE 26 36 199 A1 describes a method for manufacturing rollers for continuous casting installations reinforced with a protective layer. The chromium-nickel alloy protective layer is sprayed and then sintered. The protective layer is then machined to a final thickness of at least 1 mm.
The disadvantage of spray-deposited layers lies in their poor adhesion, since they are only mechanically attached to the surface, made coarse, of the base material. In addition, these layers cannot be applied over a constant thickness, so that further treatment is necessary.
A recent patent document, DE 37 35 884 C1, discloses an internally cooled cylinder with a wear layer provided by filler welding.
The wear layer is arranged on a round iron casing and intermediate fillings of filler welding material, while the round irons cover cooling channels machined in a core. The wear layer is. if necessary, brought in several layers and then undergoes final machining.
According to the invention, two layers are provided, over a total thickness of approximately 5 to 8 mm, in order on the one hand to avoid mixing of the welding material provided with the envelope, and on the other hand to maintain after machining a final contribution of 2
EMI2.1
mm.
All of the above-mentioned proposals have the common drawback of reducing the heat transfer between the bar and the cooling agent by the thickness and the poor thermal conductivity of the wear protection layer.
The object of the invention is to create a roll of stable shape, with internal cooling, for a continuous casting installation, with a high resistance to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
wear and at the same time a high thermal conductivity, and to provide a process for its manufacture.
The invention likewise provides a method of manufacturing an internally cooled roller according to claims 1 to 7. The method is characterized in that an intermediate layer is provided by galvanization on the casing of copper or an alloy of copper, and that on the intermediate layer, at least one covering layer is welded by overlapping welding by knurls.
According to the invention, the intermediate layer, and in particular a nickel layer provided by galvanization, makes it possible to provide the copper shell with a covering layer provided by welding. The nickel layer has measures of 0.3 to 1 mm and a thermal conductivity lower than that of the envelope. This layer reduces the heat transfer through the copper envelope during welding and thus allows complete fusion of the material provided by welding, and its welding to the intermediate layer. The use of a welding process with overlapping rollers provides covering layers, in particular of Ni-Cr-B alloy, serving as protection against wear, having a high adhesion to the base material and thicknesses less than 1 mm.
In this process it is possible to incorporate hard materials, and in particular tungsten carbide, into the filler material by welding, in order to reinforce the wear resistance of the layer.
The roller manufactured according to the process which is the subject of the invention is characterized overall, following the small thicknesses of the nickel layers and of protection against wear, by a high thermal conductivity and an insensitivity to thermal shocks, an exceptional resistance to wear, provided by the filler layer by welding and great shape stability provided by the core of ferrous material.
Patent document DD 225 334 A1, it is true, discloses a method and a device for supplying addition materials by welding with superposition by thumbwheels, and in particular metal powders (for example nickel-chromium-boron-silicon alloys), in view of the shielding or reinforcement of building elements (for example steel cylinders). But the direct recovery of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
non-ferrous metals, especially copper or copper alloys, is neither described nor possible. The document also contains no indication of the possibility of achieving layer thicknesses of less than 1 mm.
The invention is described below using the drawing.
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of a roll with a spiral coolant channel. The roller essentially consists of a core 1 of ferrous materials, of an envelope 2, surrounding the core 1, of copper or of a copper alloy, and of a protection against wear surrounding the envelope 2. Protection against the wear consists of an intermediate layer 3 made of nickel, in particular applied to the casing 2 by galvanization, and a covering layer 4 provided by welding. The envelope 2 is fixed to the core 1 by fine adjustment, and in particular by assembly by contraction. In addition, the envelope 2 is, at least on one of its edges 5, fixed to the core 1 by a welding connection 6.
In the surface of the core 1 is machined a channel of coolant 7 to one or more conduits, in the form of a spiral groove developing in the longitudinal direction L of the core L The channel of coolant 5 is covered with the tubular casing 2. In the vicinity of the edges 5 of the casing 2, the coolant channel 7 is connected to connections 9 to the coolant by drilled conduits 8 extending radially. The connections 9 to the cooling agent are arranged concentrically with the core 1 and with the bearing hubs which are connected to it.
The invention is it is true described with the aid of a roller with a single protective layer 4, but can also be implemented with a covering layer provided in several layers by welding with superposition by rollers, with at the same time time a small total thickness. As the teachings according to the invention relate to the coating of the copper envelope, the invention can also be implemented on solid copper rolls, without a core.
