<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

<EMI ID=7.1>
Continuous metal casting "Roller refinements".
Continuous casting rollers are generally made of very thick noble steel tubes.
fitted at each end with attached journals serving to
their support. The outer surface of the tube is the
rolling table in local contact with the ingot, for example slab, the outside temperature of which is of the order of
1000 [deg.] C. The inner surface of the tube is cooled by a fluid, generally water, the temperature of which is close to ambient temperature. The thick cylindrical casing forming the body of the roller is therefore subjected to dynamic thermal stresses which are superimposed on the mechanical stresses of rotary bending.
If we study the distribution, at a given moment,
temperatures along a cross section of the roll,

vicinity of the point of contact with the ingot and affects a shallow area located on the outer surface of the roll. The magnitude of this gradient and the area it affects is relatively independent of the thickness of the roller body.
We note, moreover, that the thermal opposites are proportional to the thermal gradients.
The object of the invention is above all to dissociate the two types of stresses taken up by the roller, namely stresses of thermal origin on the one hand, and stresses of mechanical origin on the other hand.
More specifically, it relates to an improved roller, in particular of the internally cooled type for the. continuous casting of metals, characterized in that it is lined on the outside by a thin ferrule mounted with play around the body of the roller.
<EMI ID = 2.1>
between 5 mm and 20 mm.
The body of the roller is provided with stop elements ensuring the axial positioning of the thin ferrule. These stop elements are formed by a shoulder and an added lambskin or by two added rings. A game is provided during assembly

the expansion of the latter relative to the body of the roller.
The thin shell is advantageously broken down into several longitudinal sections, which makes it possible to partially release the longitudinal stresses and facilitate machining.
The thick casing of conventional rollers is
<EMI ID = 4.1>
formed by the ferrule and a thick inner shell forming the body of the roller.
The thin envelope remains subject to a large thermal gradient, but its thickness being less, the thermal stresses are lower. This envelope does not participate
little or no recovery from purely mechanical stresses depending on whether it is carried out in several sections or in a single piece.
On the other hand, 1 thick inner casing ensures the mechanical strength of the roller and, as the coefficient of exchange between the thin casing and the thick casing is low, the
<EMI ID = 5.1>
consequently, thermal stresses.
The two types of stresses taken up by the roller have thus been dissociated: the stresses of thermal origin taken up by the thin outer casing and the stresses of mechanical origin taken up by the thick inner casing.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
cable to all existing types of rollers, the body of the roll not necessarily being in the form of a tubular casing.
The invention will be better understood by referring to the following description, given with reference to the appended drawings, relating to two particular embodiments given by way of non-limiting examples.
Figure 1 is an axial section of a roller according to a first form of the invention and Figure 2 is an axial section of a roller according to a second form of the invention.
In Figure 1, we see the body 1 of the roller produced in the form of a thick cylindrical envelope provided at its ends with journals 2 and 3. These journals are axially traversed by channels, respectively 4 and 5, which ensure the circulation. cooling water inside the roller, The body 1 is lined on the outside by a thin ferrule 6 mounted with play around said body. By way of example, for a hollow roll with an external diameter of 400 mm and
60 mm thick, the thickness of the shell 6 is between 5 and 20 mm. The ferrule 6 is positioned axially by stops formed by a shoulder 7 of the body 1 and by a ring 8 fixed to the body 1 after the shroud 6 has been fitted. The latter constitutes a heat shield, but also a wear part. easily replaceable. Its assembly can be slightly tightened, the clearance being formed by rolling the shell 6 after a certain operating time. A clearance is provided during assembly between the abovementioned stops and the ferrule 6 in order to allow expansion of the latter relative to the body 1 of the roller.

to designate the elements corresponding to those of the previous figure or the equivalent elements. The ferrule 6 here consists of three cylindrical sections 6a, 6b and 6c. A
more sections could be expected. At the limit,
the ferrule 6 could be made up of a stack of rings of small width. The stop elements are formed by two rings 8a and 8b fixed by welding to the body 1. The structure of the shell 6 in the form of multiple longitudinal sections partially releases the longitudinal stresses.
and facilitates machining.
The arrangement according to the invention presents a
number of advantages. The deformations and, possibly, the cracks of the thin shell do not constitute a disadvantage to the good functioning of the roller. Another advantage lies in the possibility of using different quality materials for the body of the roller on the one hand, and the ferrule on the other hand.
Although the invention has been described with reference
to two particular embodiments, it goes without saying that it is in no way limited thereto and that modifications can be made to them without going beyond its scope. The invention covers
in addition to the arrangements shown, their different variants mentioned above as well as their various combinations.
