Abstract

A roll, esp. of the type with internal cooling, employed for the continuous casting of metals, is provided with a thin external sleeve, mounted with play around the roll-body. The initial play may disappear due to the effects of rolling, after the roll has been in service for some time. The thickness of the sleeve is pref. 5-20 mm and the roll-body is pref. provided with stop elements controlling the axial posn. of the sleeve, esp. a shoulder used in conjunction with a stop-ring, or two stop-rings. The sleeve may consist of several longitudinal sections. This design separates the thermal stresses from the mechanical stresses, and the sleeve is still usable after deformation and even if fissures exist after some time in the service. Moreover, different matls. may be used for the sleeve and the roll-body.
