Abstract
1319185 Continuous casting M R TEMBE 30 June 1971 30684/71 Heading B3F Molten metal S, Fig. 6, is poured into the gap R between two hollow metal rollers, one at least of which is adjustably mounted to determine the gap and one of which has end flanges J, Fig. 1, to close the ends of the gap; coolant is sprayed (from nozzles G) in the rotated rollers and a chilled layer of metal is formed on each roller, the two layers being passed down through the gap R, to be pressed together and form one solid section which is cooled (by sprays U) and passed through guide and pinch rollers W and Y. Curved guides Z are located between successive rollers W, Y. A series of nozzles P feeds the metal into the trough T between the casting rollers, from a tundish M. The rollers may be externally cooled by water from nozzles and to increase the internal cooling there may be finned inserts in internal grooves (K). The surface of one roller may be of a grooved V-form and the surface of the other of complementary V-form so that an angle-sectioned member is cast. A starter dummy, on which the metal will fuse, may be used to plug the gap R before starting to cast. Alternatively, the rollers may be in contact, to be moved apart at starting.
