Abstract

829,374. Making rollers; welding by fusion. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. June 7, 1957 [June 11, 1956], No. 18260/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XIII] A calendering roll 2, Figs. 1, 2, 3, for working plastic materials, such as linoleum or vinyl compositions, comprises a steel mandrel 2 having a flow duct for heating or cooling fluid formed by intercommunicating grooves 10 closed by covers 11, 12 secured by weld metal 14 to the mandrel. After machining or grinding, the surface of the roll is covered with a layer 15 of mild steel weld metal which, after machining or grinding, is covered with a layer 16 of hard weld alloy steel. During the application of the layers 15, 16, the roll is heated to a temperature of about 900‹ F., and after the application of the layer 16 the roll is tempered by cooling in still air to 100‹ F. The roll is then reheated to about 950‹ F. and, if necessary, re-tempered.
