Abstract
449,364. Emb ossing. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. July 1, 1935, No. 18753. Convention date, June 29, 1934. [Class 100 (ii)] Composite material comprising fabric, paper, or other sheet material coated or impregnated with thermoplastic material is embossed between an engraved surface and a smooth support after the thermoplastic material has been rendered plastic by heating, the embossing surface preferably being cool during the operation. The heating may be effected by passing the composition through a bath of hot inert liquid such as mercury or other metal or alloy of low melting-point or a high-boiling mineral oil. Embossing is preferably effected by means of rollers, the engraved roller being of steel or other metal kept cool by internal or external cooling with air, water, or solidified gas, and the supporting-roller being made of or coated with rubber, paper, or like material, and preferably also kept cool. The composite material may be made by uniting the base and the thermoplastic material under heat and pressure, and the embossing may then be effected immediately. The thermoplastic material may be a cellulose ester or ether, halogenated rubber, a vinyl resin, or the like, and may contain plasticizers, dyes, pigments, lakes, filling-materials, fire retardants, resins, oils, or the like. Specifications 440,767 and 441,622, [both in Group VIII], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the embossing of thermoplastic materials in general, and to the production of the design on both surfaces of the material. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
