<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Device for delayed actuation of a valve"
The invention relates to a device for delayed actuation of a valve, in particular in combination with a fire extinguishing installation, the delay time being adjustable by a delay device implemented by electro-mechanical means, this the latter acting on the valve opening element by means of a triggering device.
Such a device is described in DE-A-38 26 300.
There a motor drives a threaded rod which in turn drives a threaded sleeve which does not rotate simultaneously. A stopper connected to the threaded sleeve moves a trigger lever which opens the valve. With this embodiment, the trigger lever is moved by the motor-driven threaded sleeve and thus the valve is opened directly by the delay device.
Current fire alarm systems are, in standard embodiments, incorporated into fire extinguisher systems. Delay devices to open the extinguishing valve are part of a fire alarm center.
Direct opening of the valve is a drawback because the opening force is applied only relatively slowly and high revolutions of the electric motor are required to achieve rapid advance of the delay device.
For a precise time course of the delay device, the time tolerances must be designed within narrow limits.
The manufacturing tolerances also of the existing component parts of a fire extinguisher installation must be respected within narrow limits to ensure large safety reserves. In particular, in fire extinguishing installations comprising extinguishing means endangering people,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
like CO.- for example, no sufficient security is guaranteed in the current state of the art.
Mechanical delay and opening devices are very expensive for reasons of manufacturing technique. Given the possible corrosions, the wear of moving parts as well as the imprecisions of the procedure or similar circumstances, such devices involve a great residual risk. Electrical installations can cause faulty, non-delayed tripping by external influences, such as a lightning strike or magnetic inductances.
Starting from DE-A-38 26 300, the invention aims to avoid the drawbacks described and to increase the safety of opening the valve several times in the event of fire and to avoid danger of involuntary tripping due to inductances, lightning or similar conditions.
This problem is solved by the fact that the triggering device is provided with a separate stop element, which can be stopped by the delay device and which in turn stops a force transmitter which, after the delay time has elapsed , is released and thus activates the opening element.
By the device according to the invention, any variable force, several times that required, is applied for the opening of the valve and one thus obtains a safety such that external influences cannot generate an undelayed, involuntary tripping . The essence of the invention can be seen in the force transmitter which is mounted between the delay device and the trigger device. This force transmitter can be produced in the form of a mechanical, or pneumatic, or electrical, or hydraulic element.
The respective force transmitters are schematically represented and described in more detail in several exemplary embodiments. Thus, the other features of the invention characterized in the secondary claims are explained more precisely in the description of the drawings.

FIG. 1 represents a force transmitter comprising an accumulator of mechanical energy in the form of a spring force.
FIG. 2 represents a force transmitter comprising an accumulator of mechanical energy.
FIG. 3 represents a pneumatic force transmitter with a gas cartridge as a gas accumulator. FIG. 4 represents a pneumatic force transmitter comprising a control cylinder as a gas accumulator.
FIG. 5 represents a pneumatic force transmitter with the extinguishing medium as a gas accumulator.
FIG. 6 represents a force transmitter having an electrical and pyrotechnic embodiment.
FIG. 7 represents a force transmitter with direct force transmission.
The invention essentially consists of the delay device 1, the trigger device 2, the opening element 3, the stop element 4 and the force transmitter 5. These five particulars are given in all the exemplary embodiments and they are each described in isolation.
According to Figure 1, the delay device consists of a motor 6, which drives a threaded rod 7 on which a nut 8 is moved to the motor 6 when actuated. A drive stud 9, fixed to the nut 8, goes against a stop 10 of a bolt 11 supported in a bearing 12 and it pulls the latter back, in the direction of the motor 6.
The trigger device 2 consists of a trigger piston 14 provided with an actuating rod 15 and it is supported in a bearing 16. As a force transmitter 5 there is provided a spring 18 which is supported on stops 17 and 19.
As a stop element 4 there is provided a lever 20 which is supported, on the one hand, on the piston 22, axially displaceable, of the latch II and, on the other hand, on the trigger piston 14. In the example embodiment, the lever 20 is, in the upper part, provided with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
support 23, the projecting end 24 being adjacent to the lower end 25 of the piston 14. If the bolt 11 is pulled towards the motor 6, the lower end 26 of the lever 20 is released so that the spring 18 pivots with the spring force the projecting end 24 around the point 23 and that with this the spring 18 pushes the actuating rod 15 against the opening element 3, which allows the opening of the extinguishing valve 13 The pivot point 23 can also be arranged in the middle of the lever 20.
According to FIG. 2, the delay device 1 consists of a motor 27 which drives a toothed wheel 28. This toothed wheel 28 is engaged with a rack 29 of a thrust bush 30 which forms, together with a opening piston 31, the triggering device 2. The piston is supported in a tube 32 which in turn is fixed on a housing 33. Between a wall 34 of the housing 33 and the opening piston 31 is mounted a spring 35 , as a force transmitter 5. Inside the tube 32 and the opening piston 31, a groove 36 is provided in which several balls 37 are inserted. In the event of fire, the motor 27 moves the rack 29 in the direction of the arrow 41.
When a path 42 is traversed, the balls 37 fall into a free space 38 of the thrust sleeve 30 and they are harvested there by stops 39.
Thus the opening piston 31 is with the rod 40 released so that the spring 35 moves the rod 40 towards the opening element 3, which allows the opening of the extinguishing valve 13.
In accordance with FIG. 3, the delay device 1 is formed by a control disc 44 which is driven by a motor 43. The disc 44 pushes a pin 45 into the bore 46 of a housing 47. At the other open end of the housing 47 is provided a cylinder 48 with a piston 49 and a piston rod 50, the cylinder 48 being open towards the housing 47. Inside the housing 47 is provided, as force transmitter 5, a cartridge with gas 51 which is closed at the head 52 of the bottle by a closure sheet 53 as a stop element 4. Between the gas cartridge 51 and the piston 49 is arranged a point 55 using spacers 54.
In the event of opening, the pin 45 pushes the gas cartridge 51 against the tip
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
55 so that the latter tears off the closure sheet 53 and thus releases the contents of the gas cartridge. The gas, which is under pressure in the gas cartridge 51, pushes the piston 49 with the piston rod 50 towards the opening element 3, so as to thus open the extinguishing valve 13.
According to Figure 4, the electromechanical delay device 1 consists of a motor 56 which drives an element 58 via a rod 57. Via a device 59, a valve 60, which serves to stop element 4 is open. This valve 60 is, via a conduit 61, in communication with a control cylinder 62 which is filled with a pressurized gas and which serves as a force transmitter 5. On the other hand, the valve 60 is connected to a cylinder 64 in which there is a piston 65 provided with a rod.
When, via the delay device 1, the valve 60 is open, a pressurized gas flows from the control cylinder 62 into the chamber 66 of the cylinder 64 and it pushes the piston 65 with its rod towards the opening element 3 and thus opens the extinguishing valve 13 so that the extinguishant can flow from the extinguisher bottle 68 through the conduit 67.
According to Figure 5, the delay device 1 consists of a motor 69, which drives a rod 70 and a device 71 by which an opening device 72 of a valve 73 is opened. These parts form the stop element 4. The valve 73 is connected, on the one hand, by a bypass conduit 74 to the head of the bottle of extinguishing agent 68 and, on the other hand, by a conduit 75 to a cylinder 76 which acts as a triggering device 2. The cylinder 76 is equipped with a piston 77 and a piston rod 78 which acts on the extinguishing valve 13 and opens the latter. The cylinder 76 with its devices 77 and 78 serves as an opening element 3.
After opening the valve 73, the extinguishing product flows through the bypass conduit 74 and the conduit 75 into the chamber 79 of the cylinder 76 and thus opens the extinction valve 13.
According to Figure 6, the delay device is formed of a motor 80, a rod 81 and a nut 82 axially movable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
To the nut 82 is connected a stop element 4 which consists of a plate 83 and a bar 84. In this exemplary embodiment, the plate 83 acts as an additional blocking element vis-à-vis an involuntary opening of the extinguishing valve 13. The triggering device 2 consists of an electrical switch 85 having a switching button 86 and it is connected to an electrical line 87. An electrical line 88 leaves from the switch 85 to a pyrotechnic force transmitter 5. This consists of a housing 89 comprising a piston 90 and a piston rod 91.
The chamber 92 is filled with a pyrotechnic charge and is provided with an electric detonator 93. In the event of fire, the nut 82 and with it the plate 83 with the rod 84 are moved towards the button 86 of the switch 85 of so that the switch 85 closes and thus current can pass through the lines 87 and 88. The pyrotechnic charge is ignited by the detonator 93 and thus the piston 90 is suddenly launched with the rod 91 against the opening element 3 ce which allows the opening of the extinguishing valve 13. If for example a lightning strikes the electrical line 87 and thus forms a spark bridge towards the line 88, the opening element 3 cannot be moved even in this case, when igniting the pyrotechnic charge, because the plate 83 prevents movement of the opening element 3.
Instead of the pyrotechnic charge 92, an electromagnet can be provided which, in the event of current conduction through the lines 87 and 88, displaces the piston rod 91 and thus opens the extinguishing product valve 13. An additional motor can also, instead of the pyrotechnic charge, ensure the opening of the opening element 3.
According to FIG. 7, the delay device 1 again consists of a motor 95 with a rod 96 and a nut 97 which pushes against a plate 98 of the trigger device 2.
The force transmitter 5 consists of a stepped cylinder 99 comprising a small cylinder part 100 and a large cylinder part 101. In the cylinder part 100 there is provided a piston 102 provided with a piston rod 103 which is connected to plate 98.
In the cylinder part 101 there is provided a piston 104 provided with a piston rod 105 which is supported on the opening element 3. Des
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
tension springs 106 are added to the piston 102 and compression springs 107 to the piston 104. If the nut 97 moves the piston 102 and with it constitutes a pressure inside the cylinder 99, the opening element 3 n 'is moved only when the forces of the springs 106 and 107 are overcome. Thus, the springs act as stop elements 4.
The invention is not limited to the examples shown. Thus, it can no longer be imagined that the delay device 1 does not consist of a motor, a rod and a nut, but on the contrary of a motor comprising a control disc and a controlled rod. The control disc can be made in the form of a cam or the like. Similarly, it can be imagined that, in all cases, the delay device consists of a toothed wheel with a rack. Blocking 83/84, shown in FIG. 6, can also, in this form or in a similar form, be applied according to the invention for all the other exemplary embodiments.
