<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

U-SHAPED STEEL
The invention relates to a method for forming U-shaped steel profiles by rolling. starting from an essentially flat rolling plate, as well as the installation for the implementation of this process.
Hot rolling of a U-shaped steel constitutes. according to the known state of the art, an operation which requires a large number of pairs of cylinders comprising sometimes complicated profila. The complexity of current methods is evident by examining Figures 3 to 9 in which the various profiles are shown diagrammatically.
It can be seen that each dimension of U-shaped steel profile requires its own arsenal of cylinders which must be obtained, maintained and managed. which leads to excesaife cost prices for tense product ranges,
A special feature of the U-shaped steel profile in accordance with standards is that the two wings shrink towards their ends, the outer profile being inclined by about 1, while the inner profile has
EMI1.1
a more marked inclination. The latter is 80 for back heights less than 300 mm and 50 for back heights greater than 300 mm.
This feature in no way corresponds to any advantage for the use of the U-shaped steel profile, but represents. on the contrary, an inconvenience; the execution of the U-shaped steel profile in the form just described is, according to the state of the art, a necessity arising from conventional profiling of the cylinders.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In fact, a U-shaped profile with straight wings, having a uniform thickness and forming a right angle to the core, may not be rolled using conventional rollers. On the other hand, the user of the steel profiles must take into account the peculiarities of the standardized profiles, and must in particular when connecting the U-shaped steel profiles to other profiles at right angles, take special measures and use expedients that compensate for the geometric differences.
The object of the present invention is to create a process for the production of U-shaped steel profiles which has. compared to traditional methods, advantages of simplification of the profiling scheme and allows. as a result, a reduction in the number of cylinders required.
In addition, the new process should make it possible to manufacture
EMI2.1
U-shaped steel profiles with wings of uniform thickness, the common inclination angles of 10 of 80 or SO and the invention therefore relates to a process in which the U-shaped steel profile is obtained from 'a rough part (called "flat") having an eaaentially flat profile. This "flat" is constituted by a flat iron which has on one of its faces two projections of substantially triangular shape.
The part of steel between the protrusions is subsequently called to form the core of the U-shaped steel section.
EMI2.2
as the soles located on both sides of the projections are called As regards the outer edges of the wings-core of the U-shaped profile. these must thus be practically identical to the material which constitutes the points of the projections.
Such a profile can be produced without difficulty from a flat iron or a round iron. rEalise then already form the wings, significant savings compared to the known state of the art, because one needs for all the passes to be executed for the realization of the blank only an upper cylinder in which are provided by turning two cavities per profile and a fully smooth lower cylinder. The number of passes depends on the nature of the gross product, on the one hand, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
on the other hand, requirements as to the accuracy of the rounding dimensions, both at the ends of the wings and at the transition between the core and the wings.
While making the blank is one. a simple matter which does not require any particular explanation, finishing with a rolling mill poses problems and the invention also aims to achieve this finishing with a rolling mill in a single pass for reasons of efficiency.
A rolling mill finishing in a single pass is made possible by the device according to the invention, namely a pair of cylinders which has the following characteristics - tea: the upper cylinder is provided with a profile made up of two parts. The inner part, that is to say that which is
EMI3.1
the closest to the cylinder is a cavity which corresponds to the external contour of the U-shaped steel profile.
It is a question of engaging the essentially flat blank in this cavity. Instead of using a complicated guide combined with a universal cage, the upper cylinder is, according to the invention, provided with an external acity which corresponds to an enlargement of the interior part described above.
Consequently. the inner part represents the outer contour of the finished U-shaped steel profile and the outer part constitutes a device for centering the flat blank which is engaged and is supported by its outer edges on the wall of the cylinder which has, in section , a form of funnel.
The lower cylinder is provided with a projection, the profile of which corresponds, in section, to the internal contour of the U-shaped steel profile. The centered blank is grasped by means of this projection and engaged in the cavity of the upper cylinder; the
EMI3.2
triangular shaped projections of the blank gradually assume a guide role during the progressive folding of the wings, which the cellar defined by the two cylinders is filled.
Which schematically show, by way of example, the arrangement of cylinders up to the invention: - Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a pair of cylinders whose profile allows obtaining
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
laminated parts having open wing ends; while, - Figure 2 shows substantially the same pair of cylinders whose profile however corresponds to
EMI4.1
extrema - lea show, as already do pairs of cylinders intended for the rolling of conventional U-shaped steel sections, without the use of blanks of the type provided in the context of the invention.
Figure 1 shows the upper cylinder 1 and the cylinder

dre inferieur.ainaiquel laminate 8 with triangular-shaped protruding blank A. The profile of the cylinder 1 is defined by a cavity, itself divided into two parts 10 and 11. The internal part 10 is extended by a widening 11, on the edges of which the blank is centered. This is
EMI4.3
thanks to this centering on the same cylinder that it is possible to carry out the rolling mill finishing of a U-shaped steel profile from a flat blank
The profile of the cylinder 2 defines a projection 21 which grasps the blank 0 and brings it to its final position between the cylinders.
As parts 10 and 21 correspond respectively to the external and internal contours of U-shaped steel profiles, these parts are dimensioned accordingly. In the profile shown. the parts 10 and 21 are only slightly inclined towards the outside with respect to the vertical; it
EMI4.4
results a profile with parallel wings & side walls and angular external edges. As already indicated, this is a possible form of execution, but which should not be considered as limiting.
In fact, the arrangement of the two cylinders according to the invention also allows the production of steel profiles in
EMI4.5
U comply with the standards in force only with steel parts which present a profile similar to that of U-shaped steel profiles, without constituting U-shaped steel profiles within the meaning of the standards.

EMI5.1
FIG. 2 shows substantially the same pair of cylinders as 18 in FIG. 1, but the cylinder 2 is modified in that the projection 21 has an enlargement 20 which delimits the ends of the wings of the U-shaped profile. This embodiment is recommended when 'one wishes to obtain a dimensioning particularly outside edges are. here, Among prement profil U according to the state of the art presents little similarity. with U according to the state of the art has little similarity ¯ threshold as flat.
Figures 3 to 9 show that the products produced by the invention allow the production of even profiles. The invention allows the production of steel profiles which are substantially U-shaped, with which the washing cage determines the final profile, the dimension of the the core being fixed, however that the dimensions of the wings can be chosen from a wide range and that the blank to be laminated has an exceptionally shape makes it possible to simplify and reduce the price of the entire manufacturing process.
