<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Connection of pipes, in particular superheater pipes.
It has already been proposed to connect superheater pipes by welded knee pieces or pipe bends or to unite the ends of the correspondingly bent pipes directly by welding or to weld the pipe strings with a cap that is completely open on one side and connecting the interior of the two pipe strings.
These known arrangements and methods suffer from various deficiencies in their manufacture and durability. In particular, the reliable welding between the two pipe legs lying close to one another presents great difficulties.
According to the present invention, the mutually facing pipe walls are first connected to one another at the edges by welding after a corresponding redesign of the pipe cross-section and then one of these connecting points and in a known manner

Wise wall reinforcements have opposite the pipe cross-sections. in order to have a greater resistance to burning on the required stellon and to facilitate the connection.
EMI1.2
Fig. 1 and 1 a visible way on one side at b profiled and at the same time slightly thickened.
This thickening is expedient in order to compensate for the weakening of the wall thickness brought about by the enlargement and in order, furthermore, to gain somewhat more meat thickness for the later autogenous welding.
The pipe end is then beveled on all sides at the outer edge in the beveled manner shown in FIGS. 2 and 2a. This bevel is also useful for the autogenous pre-welding.
Then the pipe ends are put together with the flat walls and first of all welded to one another at the straight, touching edges at b (FIGS. 3 and 3a). From the plan of FIG. 3 it can be seen how the outer edge is to be designed in order to be able to place the closure cap smoothly.
Fig. 4 shows the closure cap c, which has the shape of a shell. The cap can be pressed from sheet metal, for example. The edge of the cap is appropriately bevelled outwards.
Fig. 4 a shows how the closure cap is connected to the tubes. The joint running all around between the cap and the pipe ends is autogenously welded.
One could also, like FIGS. 5 and! 1 a show, carry out the welding in such a way that the welding bead is smooth all around.
In the connection described above, the mutually facing wall parts of the tubes to be connected by the pre-welded shell-like cap are first of all shaped and then welded.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
If, however, the pipes are left to stand apart for some reason, for example for the purpose of better smoke passage, the connection described cannot be used without further ado, because the pipes have to be quite close together.
A greater distance between the tubes can now be achieved in a further embodiment of the invention in that a short distance piece of suitable shape is placed between the two tube ends and connected to the tubes.
In the drawing (FIGS. 9 to 12), such a pipe connection is shown in an exemplary embodiment in the various stages of manufacture.
As can be seen from FIGS. 6 and 7, a short spacer d, for example made of mild iron, which can easily be produced by milling for any pipe spacing, is placed between the ends of the two pipes a and is autogenously welded to the pipes pressed cap c (Figs. 9 and 10). placed on the pipe ends and, as shown in FIGS. 11 and 12, welded by a circular seam.
This method has the advantage over the one described first that the superheater tubes, which are always bent at the other end and provided with flanges or the like, can be placed next to one another exactly to the desired length, connected by welding the intermediate piece and then smoothed on the front surface in such a way that a level support for the cap is created.
It is also even easier to lay the tubes next to one another after bending them, mark them and cut them off in such a way that, after the spacer has been welded on, the cap is flat.
The profiling of the pipe ends is omitted here, and the wall thickening of the pipes by upsetting, which was intended to compensate for the wall weakening caused by the profiling, can also be omitted.
The present connection can therefore be made cheaper. It also has the advantage of a large steam reversal space.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Connection of pipes, in particular superheater pipes, by means of a shell-like cap covering the pipe ends, characterized in that the flat wall parts of the pipes facing each other are first connected to one another, preferably by autogenous welding, and then the cap is welded in front of the open pipe ends.
