 EMI1.1

The production of nitro products from crude petroleum or petroleum distillates is already known.

However, it has so far not been successful from pure petroleum. which is also commercially viable as kerosene to obtain nitro products.

However, it has been found that this is possible if pure petroleum is nitrated in the presence of tar, and this is done in the following manner: Approximately 40 parts by weight of distilled kerosene are initially mixed with approximately 6 parts by weight of tar. mainly wood tar, intimately mixed. 10 parts by weight of concentrated nitric acid are slowly added dropwise to this mixture, with constant stirring and cooling. The action of the nitric acid now takes place in a very intensive manner with the development of yellow to red-brown vapors.

After a few hours of filtration, two red-yellow oils of different specific and different color intensities are obtained. which form separate layers, while a solid, resinous nitro product remains in the form of a blackish brown mass on the filter.

In contrast to petroleum, the obtained oily nitro products can be mixed with all oils as well as with glycerine and, after prolonged shaking with water, especially with the addition of absolute alcohol, produce a white, fairly stable emulsion.

The resinous nitro products are for the most part water-soluble. of smaller specific weights than tar and can be combined to form an asphalt-like mass.
 EMI1.2
dissolved sulfur gives it a special strength and a rubber-like shine.

The importance of this invention lies primarily in the fact that it enables the use of the known preserving and insulating properties of petroleum and tar. while this appears to be ruled out in the case of the non-pretreated products because of the smell, the color and their difficulty in mixing with other oils and fats.
